Wake turbulence is the invisible, rotating air left behind by any aircraft producing lift, and it is most dangerous on short final and just after takeoff. The single habit that keeps you safe is simple: stay at or above the flight path of the airplane ahead of you, and land beyond the point where it touched down. Because wake sinks below the flight path and stops the instant a wing stops flying, staying high and landing long keeps you clear of the strongest vortices.

What Is Wake Turbulence and Why Is It Dangerous?

Where Does Wake Turbulence Go After It Forms?

Three behaviors let you actually avoid it:

1. Vortices sink. They descend roughly 300 to 500 feet below the flight path of the airplane that made them, then tend to level off. The wake of the airplane ahead is sitting below and behind the path it flew.

2. Vortices drift. In still air they move slowly apart from the flight path. Add a crosswind and they drift with it. The trap: a light crosswind of about 3 to 5 knots is the worst possible wind. It can hold the upwind vortex parked right over the runway while pushing the downwind vortex toward the next runway over. That gentle breeze that feels like nothing is the one that keeps the danger where you’re about to land.

3. Vortices last longest in calm air. They are strongest and persist longest in still, stable conditions. A gusty, turbulent day breaks them up faster. A beautiful, calm Oshkosh morning is also the morning wake hangs around the longest.

What Is the One Habit That Keeps You Out of a Heavy’s Wake?

Stay at or above the flight path of the airplane ahead of you, and land beyond the point where it touched down.

That’s the whole thing. Because the wake sinks, staying on or above the path the airplane ahead flew keeps the wake descending away beneath you the entire time. And because a heavy airplane stops making wake the instant its wheels touch and the wing quits flying, the runway beyond its touchdown point is clean.

So note where it touches down, and plan to touch down beyond it.

How Do I Fly a Landing Behind a Heavy at Oshkosh?

Picture it. You’re on the Fisk arrival, you’ve done everything right, and Oshkosh tower clears you to land on runway 27 on the colored dot they assigned. Ahead of you, a big warbird or transport is settling toward the numbers.

Here’s the mistake many pilots make: they see the heavy touch down back at the threshold and think, “I’ll plant it right behind him and clear the runway quick to be a good citizen.” That flies you straight down into where the wake is sitting.

Instead:

  1. Watch and mark where the heavy’s mains touch down.
  2. Keep a normal glidepath - don’t dive to chase the pavement early.
  3. Put your wheels down beyond his touchdown point.

At Oshkosh, the colored dots down the runway - green, then pink, then orange - exist precisely so tower can slot multiple airplanes onto one runway and keep everyone landing long or short of each other. When tower gives you a dot farther down the runway, they are literally handing you wake turbulence separation. Fly to your dot. Don’t cheat it short because you’re nervous about floating.

How Do I Handle Wake Turbulence on Takeoff?

Same rules, flipped around. An airplane starts laying down wake right at its rotation point as it climbs out.

Your plan:

  1. Lift off before that point - rotate before where the heavy rotated.
  2. Climb above and stay upwind of its flight path.
  3. Turn slightly toward the upwind side once you’re safely climbing, staying above the sinking, drifting wake.

If the spacing feels tight, there’s nothing wrong with sitting still and asking for a little more time - even at Oshkosh, even with pressure behind you.

Am I Allowed to Go Around or Wait?

Yes. You are allowed to say no.

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) - the standard your examiner held you to on your checkride - address wake turbulence directly in the takeoff and landing tasks. The examiner is looking for a pilot who identifies the wake hazard, adjusts the approach or departure to avoid it, and is willing to go around or wait when it isn’t safe. That’s not extra credit. That’s the standard, and it doesn’t expire the day you pass.

If you’re on final behind a heavy and your gut says the spacing is too tight and the air is dead calm, go around. Fly the go-around the way the NOTAM and controllers brief it, and come back around.
