Three people sat there: Burt Rutan, the visionary aircraft designer known for his distinctive canard wings; his brother Dick Rutan, a Vietnam combat pilot who had flown more than 300 missions; and Jeana Yeager, a pilot and draftswoman (no relation to Chuck Yeager, a question she fielded for the rest of her life).
Burt sketched the concept on the back of a paper napkin - an airplane that could circle the globe without stopping. That napkin now resides in a museum, because the crew actually built what they drew.
How Voyager Was Built to Weigh Almost Nothing
Voyager didn’t look like a conventional airplane. It resembled a catamaran that had grown wings: two long slender booms out front, a central body for the crew, and a wingspan of 111 feet - wider than a Boeing 727.
The secret was weight. Empty, with no fuel or people aboard, Voyager weighed less than 1,000 pounds - about a quarter of what a large luxury sedan weighs. Nearly the entire airframe was built from carbon fiber and graphite-and-paper honeycomb composites, cured and shaped by hand in a Mojave hangar over five years, largely by volunteers on a shoestring budget.
Loaded for the flight, however, Voyager weighed nearly 10,000 pounds. That means more than 70% of the aircraft at takeoff was fuel, distributed across 17 tanks in the wing, booms, and fuselage. The crew was, quite literally, flying inside a flying gas can.
Life Inside a Cockpit the Size of a Phone Booth
The cabin where Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager lived for nine days measured about 7.5 feet long and just over 3 feet wide - roughly a phone booth laid on its side. One pilot flew half-reclined at the controls while the other rested, curled in a space too tight to sit up or lie flat.
For most of the flight there was no usable autopilot, so the aircraft was flown by hand nearly the entire way around the world. It was punishingly loud - the front air-cooled engine hammered just feet from their heads, and both crew members suffered hearing loss despite headsets.
The airframe was so light and flexible that the wings visibly flapped in turbulence, the tips flexing feet at a time. The pilots simply had to trust that the composite would hold.

Voyager departed Edwards Air Force Base in the California desert on December 14, 1986. Fully loaded, the fuel-heavy wings sagged so far that both wingtips dragged on the concrete during the takeoff roll.
It took the airplane more than 14,000 feet of runway - over 2.5 miles - to stagger into the air, and even then it barely climbed. The damaged wingtips were left hanging. Dick Rutan pitched the aircraft up sharply, and the two ruined tips broke off. After a pass by the tower to assess the damage, the crew judged the aircraft still airworthy and pointed the nose west. There was no landing to fix anything now - they were committed.
Nine Days Around a Hostile World
The flight was anything but smooth. Heading out over the Pacific, the crew encountered Typhoon Marge in the western Pacific. Rather than flee it, the ground team in Mojave steered Voyager to ride the storm’s outer edge, using its circulation for a free tailwind. With too little fuel to fight the weather, they had to make the weather work for them.
The route took them across the Pacific, over the Philippines, and across the Indian Ocean, where they threaded between towering thunderstorms at night - unable to climb over them because the aircraft was too heavy.
Over the middle of Africa, violent weather rolled Voyager onto its side at nearly 90 degrees of bank, the 111-foot wing standing on edge in the dark. Dick Rutan wrestled it back level.
Then, near the end, coming back up across the Pacific toward home, the rear engine quit after uneven fuel drainage starved it. The heavy aircraft began sinking toward the ocean in the dark. The crew performed an emergency drill to restore fuel flow and restarted the dead engine mid-descent - barely - just a few hundred miles from the finish.
The Landing on Fumes

When it landed, the 17 tanks held under 20 gallons of fuel - out of nearly 7,000 pounds they had started with. They had flown a full lap of the Earth and come home with just about enough to taxi.

It’s tempting to file Voyager away as a stunt, but it was far more. It was, in a real sense, the last of the great geographic firsts for the airplane. First powered flight, first across the Atlantic, first around the world with stops, first nonstop across the oceans - and then Voyager. After December 23, 1986, there was nowhere left on Earth an airplane hadn’t flown nonstop.
The way it was done mattered too. Voyager proved that an entire large airframe could be built from composite materials and trusted with human lives around the world. Every modern composite aircraft - from a Cirrus to a Boeing 787 Dreamliner - descends from a world that Burt Rutan and his Mojave crew helped bring into being with a napkin sketch and five years of sanding.
Voyager hangs today in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., in the main hall near the Spirit of St. Louis and the Bell X-1. It looks impossibly fragile - and yet two people folded themselves into it and flew it around the world by hand, on faith, carbon fiber, and about 20 gallons to spare.
