How Was Voyager Designed to Fly So Far?

Voyager used a two-engine, twin-boom layout that looked more like a dragonfly than a traditional airplane. The crew sat in a small central pod, with one engine mounted in front and one in back.

The front engine was shut down once the aircraft was underway to conserve fuel. The rear engine - a liquid-cooled Continental - was the one that had to run continuously for nine days without quitting. On either side of the pod stretched enormous, thin, fuel-filled wings, connected to the tails by two long booms.

The cabin itself was brutally small: 7.5 feet long and about 2 feet wide. One crew member flew while the other rested lying down, in a space too tight to roll over.

The Near-Disaster on Takeoff

The most dangerous moment of the entire mission was the very first one. A fully-fueled Voyager had never flown before takeoff day - it was too heavy to test at full weight. So when Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager began their takeoff roll on December 14, 1986, at Edwards Air Force Base, they were flying the airplane at maximum weight for the first time in history.

Edwards has one of the longest runways in the country - about 15,000 feet - and Voyager used nearly all of it. The long, fuel-laden wings bent downward under the load until the winglets at the tips scraped and dragged along the runway, grinding pieces off onto the concrete.

Conditions inside were miserable. The rear engine droned directly behind the crew’s heads, forcing them to wear headsets to communicate. It was cold at altitude, hot down low, and cramped throughout. They ate from pouches and grew so fatigued they began seeing things that weren’t there.

The weather made it harder. Over the ocean, Voyager encountered Typhoon Marge. Unable to land or turn back, the crew used the storm to their advantage - riding the winds spiraling around it for a tailwind push while skirting the worst of it. The Engine Failure That Nearly Ended It

Near the end of the flight, as Voyager approached the California coast, the rear engine - the one that could not be lost - coughed and quit. Fuel had drawn down in a way that left an air pocket, starving the engine. The airplane began falling toward the Pacific, nose down, in near silence.

To recover, Dick had to point the dead-stick aircraft downhill to keep air flowing, restart the cold front engine, and coax fuel back to the rear engine before running out of altitude. They lost thousands of feet in the process, but got both engines running again, climbed back up, and pointed the nose toward home.
