VFR flight following is a free radar service that gives cross-country pilots traffic alerts, airspace awareness, and emergency support - here's how to get it and use it correctly.
VFR flight following is a workload-permitting radar service provided to VFR pilots at no charge through the Air Route Traffic Control Centers (ARTCC) and Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facilities. A controller watches your transponder return, can see your altitude if you have an altitude-encoding transponder, knows your destination, and can alert you to conflicting traffic, nearby airspace, or anything else in the radar picture. It is one of the most underused free tools in general aviation.
What does VFR flight following actually give you?
Traffic alerts. The controller can see other transponder-equipped aircraft near you. If something is converging on your heading and altitude, they call it out: “Cessna two tango foxtrot, traffic, twelve o’clock, five miles, same altitude, a Beechcraft Bonanza, southbound.” You look, report it in sight or not in sight, and the loop closes. Without flight following, that Bonanza exists only in terms of what you can see out the window or detect with whatever traffic alerting your panel carries.
Airspace awareness. Controllers will often alert you when you’re drifting toward restricted airspace or a hot Military Operations Area. They are not responsible for keeping you out of airspace - that is your job - but those heads-up calls have kept more than a few pilots from an uncomfortable conversation with the FSDO.
An emergency channel. If anything goes wrong, you have a direct line to someone who can vector you to the nearest airport, alert emergency services, and coordinate the response. That has real value on a cross-country over unfamiliar terrain.
How do I request VFR flight following?
Before departure, identify the Center or TRACON frequency for the airspace you’ll enter shortly after takeoff. The FAA Chart Supplement (formerly the Airport Facility Directory) lists all ARTCC sector frequencies organized by region. Most Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) applications display the relevant Center frequency over the map at your planned altitude. Write it down before you go.
You can make the request before takeoff or shortly after departure, once you’re clear of the departure airport’s traffic area.
The initial callup includes six elements:

If the controller has radar capacity, they’ll assign a squawk code. Dial it in, select ALT on your transponder, and ident when asked. The controller confirms radar contact, and you are on flight following.
What happens after I get a squawk code?
The controller confirms your position and altitude: “Cessna six seven two tango foxtrot, radar contact, ten miles southwest of Granbury, altitude indicates four thousand five hundred.” From that moment, a real person is watching a radar return that represents your aircraft.
On a long cross-country, you will pass through multiple sectors. Each handoff is a brief radio call - the controller says something like “Cessna two tango foxtrot, contact Fort Worth Center on one two seven point four five.” Read it back, switch frequencies, and check in with your callsign, altitude, and VFR. The new controller picks you up and service continues.
Going through three or four sector handoffs on a long cross-country is completely routine. Don’t let the frequency changes break your scan.
What does VFR flight following NOT give you?
Flight following is not a clearance. This is the most important thing to understand about the service, and it is a known checkride trap.
Being on flight following does not authorize you to enter Class B, Class C, or Class D airspace. Each of those requires explicit clearance or communications appropriate to that airspace class. If you’re approaching Class B, you must specifically request a Class B clearance, and the controller must specifically clear you to enter. Vague language - “resume own navigation,” “frequency change approved” - is not a Class B clearance. Do not enter on an assumption.
The Airman Certification Standards address this directly. A common practical test scenario involves a student who assumes that continuous ATC communication throughout a flight means authorization for everything. It does not. The distinction matters on a checkride and matters even more in real airspace.
What happens when flight following is terminated?
Because flight following is workload-permitting, it can end at any time. If instrument traffic, an emergency, or any other operational priority requires that frequency, the controller will say: “Cessna two tango foxtrot, radar service terminated, squawk VFR, frequency change approved.”
That is not a failure. That is the system working as designed. Your job is to be prepared for it before you leave the ground.
Flight following is a layer on top of your own preparation, not a replacement for it. Your route study, weather briefing, NOTAMs, fuel planning, alternates, and personal minimums all exist independently of radar service. Pull radar service away, and your preparation still has to be complete underneath it.
If you lose contact or get no response, don’t spiral. Try the frequency again, check the Chart Supplement for an adjacent sector frequency, or look ahead to the next facility on your route. 121.5 is the emergency frequency monitored by every ATC facility - it is always available.
What frequencies do I use, and when?
For weather briefing, NOTAMs, and VFR flight plan filing: Contact Leidos Flight Service. The national frequency is 122.2. Regional frequencies are listed on the sectional chart. Flight Service does not provide flight following - it is a separate piece of the system.
For flight following below 18,000 feet:
- Near a busy terminal area: call the TRACON
- En route between terminal areas: call the ARTCC (Center)
Center frequencies appear in the Chart Supplement and on low-altitude instrument charts, and most EFB applications display the relevant frequency over your planned route at your planned altitude. Find it during preflight planning, write it down, and keep the Chart Supplement accessible for backup sector frequencies.
Can student pilots use VFR flight following?
Absolutely - and they should. Many student pilots fly entire cross-country flights in complete radio silence because they are unsure what to say. Flying without flight following when you could have it is a missed safety opportunity and a missed learning experience.
You can say “student pilot” in your initial callup. Controllers are trained for it. They will give you more patience and more explanation. If you are confused, say so. If you need something repeated, ask. Controllers would rather say something twice than have a VFR pilot get into a situation they could have helped prevent.
How do PIREPs fit into flight following?
When you’re on flight following and encounter something worth reporting - smooth air, turbulence, cloud tops, anything - file a Pilot Weather Report (PIREP) directly with Center. They relay it into the system. You’re already talking to someone. It takes thirty seconds, and the report reaches other pilots, Flight Service, and the broader weather forecasting picture immediately. Use it.
