VFR Flight Following, the Free Radar Service You Should Be Using on Every Cross-Country

VFR flight following is a free radar advisory service any pilot can request - here's exactly how to set it up, manage it en route, and terminate it cleanly.

VFR flight following is a radar traffic advisory service available to any pilot flying under visual flight rules, at no cost beyond the radio call to request it. A radar controller assigns you a discrete transponder code, tracks your aircraft on their scope, and issues traffic advisories throughout your flight. It is one of the most underused tools in general aviation training.

What Is VFR Flight Following and What Does It Actually Do?

The formal name is radar traffic advisory service, and it’s described in AIM Section 4, Chapter 1. When you’re established on flight following, a controller monitors your transponder return and calls out traffic that may conflict with your flight path - something like: “Traffic, eleven o’clock, five miles, altitude indicates four thousand five hundred, a Piper, westbound.”

That’s the core value: a second set of eyes backed by radar, covering every transponder-equipped aircraft in that chunk of airspace.

It is not a babysitter. You remain pilot in command, fully responsible for see-and-avoid, terrain clearance, and airspace compliance. Flight following adds a layer of situational awareness - it does not transfer any responsibility to the controller.

Why Do Student Pilots Avoid It?

Intimidation is the main reason. ATC frequencies move fast, controllers sound busy, and requesting a service you’ve never asked for while simultaneously flying the airplane feels like a lot to manage.

The reality: controllers work with student pilots every single day. A slightly rough radio call isn’t a problem. What they want is contact.

From the controller’s perspective, an aircraft squawking 1200 - the default VFR code - is just an anonymous blip. They don’t know who it is, where it’s going, or what altitude it’s at without Mode C. An aircraft in two-way communication, with a discrete squawk, a known altitude, and a known destination is information they can actively work with. Requesting flight following doesn’t inconvenience controllers; it helps them build a more complete picture of their airspace.

Who Do You Contact for VFR Flight Following?

The right facility depends on where you are in the flight.

Departing a towered airport: Tower will often hand you to departure control automatically after takeoff. Once on with departure, check in and request flight following.

Departing an uncontrolled field: You need to identify the appropriate facility before engine start. The VFR sectional shows approach and departure control frequencies for nearby controlled airports. The Chart Supplement has them too, and ForeFlight lists them under the airport frequencies tab. Write the first facility’s frequency on your kneeboard before you leave the ramp.

En route: Once clear of the terminal environment, you’ll typically work with an Air Route Traffic Control Center (Center). A common misconception is that Center only handles IFR traffic - this is not true. Center handles VFR flight following at lower altitudes across the entire en route structure.

What Does the Initial Radio Call Sound Like?

Start short. Key the mic and say:

“Kansas City Center, Cessna Four Five Foxtrot Mike, request.”

You’ve named the facility, identified yourself, and signaled that you need a moment of their attention. They’ll come back: “Cessna Four Five Foxtrot Mike, go ahead.”

Then give them the full picture:

“Kansas City Center, Cessna Four Five Foxtrot Mike, Cessna one seventy-two, VFR, currently over the Emporia airport, five thousand five hundred, requesting VFR flight following to Wichita, direct.”

That transmission covers everything they need: callsign, aircraft type, flight rules, current position, altitude, requested service, and destination.

They’ll assign a squawk code: “Cessna Four Five Foxtrot Mike, squawk four six two one, ident.” Dial it in, hit ident, and they’ll confirm radar contact along with the current altimeter setting. You’re in the system.

How Do You Respond to Traffic Advisories?

Traffic calls follow a consistent format: clock reference from your nose, distance, altitude, direction of travel, and aircraft type when available.

“Cessna Foxtrot Mike, traffic, two o’clock, three miles, altitude indicates five thousand two hundred, northbound, type unknown.”

Your responses:

  • Traffic in sight: “Traffic in sight, Foxtrot Mike.”
  • Can’t find it: “Negative contact, Foxtrot Mike,” or “Looking, Foxtrot Mike.”

You don’t have to maneuver when they call traffic. See-and-avoid still governs. The advisory is information, not an instruction.

Long stretches without a traffic call don’t mean the sky is empty. The controller may simply be busy with IFR sequencing and you’ve slipped down the priority list momentarily.

What Does “Workload Permitting” Mean for VFR Pilots?

VFR flight following is a workload permitting service - that language is explicit in the AIM. A controller’s primary job is separating IFR aircraft. You are supplemental.

There will be times a controller can’t take you: “Unable, workload” or “Unable, frequency congestion.” This isn’t personal. It’s a limited resource during a busy period.

When it happens, thank them and move on. You still have your eyes, your ADS-B In traffic display if equipped, and your pilot-in-command authority. Flight following is a tool. Sometimes the tool isn’t available.

How Do Frequency Handoffs Work En Route?

As your route crosses controller sector boundaries, you’ll receive handoffs: “Cessna Foxtrot Mike, contact Dallas Center on one two six point eight five.”

Write it down. Read it back. Switch and check in. Your check-in is brief: “Dallas Center, Cessna Four Five Foxtrot Mike, five thousand five hundred, VFR.” They’ll confirm radar contact and continue from where the previous sector left off.

If you miss a handoff frequency, return to the previous frequency and ask for it again. It happens regularly, and no one gives it a second thought. Controllers may also issue a new squawk code when you cross into a new sector - sometimes, not always. Follow their lead.

How Does Flight Following Fit Into Cross-Country Planning?

Flight following layers on top of your existing navigation skills - it doesn’t replace them. The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for the Private Pilot certificate expect proficiency in pilotage and dead reckoning. You’re still tracking checkpoints, logging actual times overhead each fix, updating your fuel picture, and making weather decisions. Flight following is one additional layer of information.

Two situations where that layer pays the most dividends:

Dense traffic environments. Flying near a Class C airspace ring on a clear Saturday, or anywhere VFR activity is heavy, a controller calling traffic expands your effective scan range to everything with a working transponder.

Unfamiliar territory. Entering a terminal environment you’ve never flown into, or crossing terrain you don’t know well, having ATC aware of your position and able to issue advisories reduces workload at a time when you’re already working harder than usual.

The ACS cross-country task directly addresses this: use of ATC services en route is a tested element of the Private Pilot practical test. A candidate who requests flight following, manages frequency changes, responds correctly to traffic advisories, and cancels cleanly at the destination is demonstrating that they’re ahead of the airplane. That’s what an examiner wants to see.

How Do You Terminate VFR Flight Following?

Approaching your destination at roughly ten miles out:

  • Towered airport: Center or Approach will hand you off to tower. The handoff serves as the natural termination point.
  • Uncontrolled field: The controller may cancel radar service automatically, or you can initiate it: “Foxtrot Mike, canceling VFR flight following, going to advisory.” They’ll respond: “Radar service terminated, squawk VFR, frequency change approved, good day.”

Dial 1200 into your transponder. Switch to the CTAF for your destination. Continue inbound.

Practical Preparation Before Your Next Cross-Country

Write your frequencies down before engine start. Build a simple frequency card on your kneeboard in order of use: departure control, Center frequency for each leg, and any known sector transitions along the route. You won’t always anticipate every handoff, but having a starting point is far better than hunting through the app while managing altitude and radio simultaneously.

Rehearse your initial callup on the ground. Say it out loud before you ever leave the ramp. The first time you say it should not be at altitude, task-saturated, with a pencil in one hand and a chart in the other.

Don’t cancel when things get busy. If traffic is picking up, if you’re approaching controlled airspace, if workload is climbing - that is precisely the moment flight following is most valuable. The instinct to go heads-down and cancel is backward.
