Trim sets your airspeed, not your altitude. When you trim an airplane and release the yoke, it will pitch until it finds the speed you trimmed for and then hold that speed hands-off. The most effective way to use trim is the sequence pitch, power, trim: establish your attitude with the yoke, set your power, then roll in trim only to relieve the control pressure you’re already holding.

What Does Trim Actually Do?

On common training aircraft like the Cessna 172 and the Piper Cherokee, trim is a small adjustable surface on the tail. On many Cessnas it’s a trim tab riding on the trailing edge of the elevator. When you roll the trim wheel, you deflect that tab, which holds the elevator in position so you don’t have to.

The key concept is the one most pilots miss: trim does not set your pitch - it sets your airspeed.

A properly trimmed airplane is a remarkably stable machine. This is why pilots say an airplane “wants to fly.” Trim it for a speed, take your hands off, and it will pitch up or down until it settles on that speed and holds it. Not the altitude - the speed.

Why Shouldn’t I Use Trim to Move the Nose?

Climb. With full power and the nose up, you’re holding back-pressure to maintain climb attitude. Roll in nose-up trim a little at a time until the pressure disappears. The airplane will then hold your climb speed - roughly 74 knots in a 172 - hands-off, all the way up.

Cruise. When you level off, the airplane accelerates, and a faster airplane needs different trim. Push over to level attitude, set cruise power, and trim off the pressure with nose-down trim. Pro tip: wait for the airplane to accelerate to cruise speed before you make your final trim adjustment. Trim the instant you level and you’ll be trimmed for a slower speed than you’re actually flying - and fighting it again within thirty seconds.

Descent. Same idea. Reduce power, let the nose come down, and trim off the pressure for your descent speed.

Why Does Trim Matter Beyond a Comfortable Forearm?

Two words: spare capacity.

When the airplane is trimmed and holding altitude and speed for you, your hands are free - free to grab a chart, tune a radio, look for traffic, and think. A trimmed airplane forgives you for looking down at a frequency for three seconds. An untrimmed airplane starts drifting the moment you look away.

Sitting in the cockpit before start - or even in a chair at home - close your eyes and walk through it: level off, push to level attitude, set cruise power, wait, trim off the pressure. Say it out loud: pitch, power, trim. Muscle memory built on the ground is muscle memory you don’t have to buy in the air.

Specific Trim Tips and a Safety Note

  • Trim in small amounts. On a Cessna trim wheel, make little adjustments, not big cranks. Add a touch, then feel the yoke. Pressure gone? If not, a touch more.
