Why Does the Corsair Have Bent Wings?
In 1938, Vought won a Navy contract to build the fastest, most powerful single-engine fighter the United States had ever attempted. The engine of choice was the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp - 18 cylinders, 2,000 horsepower - a staggering figure for the era.
That engine demanded an equally massive propeller. The Hamilton Standard Hydromatic fitted to the Corsair measured 13 feet, 4 inches - nearly the height of a basketball rim, and then some. A propeller that large, spinning that close to the ground, created a geometric problem: there simply was not enough clearance between blade tip and runway without impractical solutions.

The Corsair’s First Flight and Speed Records
The prototype first flew on May 29, 1940. By October 1940, test pilot Lyman Bullard pushed the aircraft past 400 miles per hour in level flight, making the Corsair the first American single-engine fighter to exceed 400 mph. In 1940, that number was almost inconceivable.
Speed, however, was not the problem.
Why the Navy Rejected the Corsair for Carrier Operations
Carrier landing demands precision under pressure. With a tailhook, arresting wires, and maybe fifty feet of usable deck, there is no margin for error. The early Corsair introduced two serious concerns.
First, the cockpit sat far aft on the fuselage - a necessity given the size of the engine ahead of it - which meant the pilot had poor forward visibility on final approach to a carrier deck. Second, in a power-off approach, one wing (typically the right) would stall and drop before the other. Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 124 (VMF-124) flew Corsairs into Henderson Field on Guadalcanal in February 1943. Henderson Field was not a forgiving environment. Carved from jungle, prone to flooding, and regularly shelled at night by Japanese destroyers on runs the sailors called the Tokyo Express, the airstrip was pockmarked with patched bomb craters that made every landing feel like cobblestone.
The Corsair’s limited forward visibility on final approach was a genuine challenge. Pilots developed a curving, slipping approach that kept the strip in sight until the last moment. They adapted.
Once airborne and at altitude, the Corsair was a different machine. It could outrun a Zero. It could outdive a Zero. It could outclimb a Zero above roughly 15,000 feet. Against a pilot who knew how to use its speed and power, it was a different class of aircraft entirely.
The Japanese gave it a name: Whistling Death. The sound came from air rushing through the wing-root cooler intakes during a high-speed dive. If you were a Zero pilot and you heard that whistle, you were likely already out of options.
Pappy Boyington and the Black Sheep Squadron
Gregory “Pappy” Boyington was one of the most gifted and complicated figures in American aviation. Before the U.S. entered the war, he had flown with Claire Chennault’s American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers) in China, accumulating aerial victories in the P-40 Warhawk. He was brilliant in the air and difficult everywhere else - denied reinstatement in the Marine Corps twice before someone decided his skills outweighed the complications.
In September 1943, Boyington took command of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 214 (VMF-214) - a collection of pilots without a home unit, scraped together from other squadrons. Boyington called them his Black Sheep. The name stayed.
Flying Corsairs out of Munda and then Vella Lavella, the Black Sheep targeted the Japanese air base at Rabaul - one of the most heavily defended positions in the Pacific, ringed by antiaircraft guns and hundreds of Japanese aircraft. Boyington would sometimes radio ahead on a known Japanese frequency and challenge the defenders directly. They usually accepted.
In three months of combat, Boyington tallied 22 confirmed aerial victories with the Black Sheep, adding to his earlier claims with the Flying Tigers. On January 3, 1944, during a mission over Rabaul, he was shot down and captured, spending the remainder of the war as a prisoner.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor. Most such medals go to men who do not survive to receive them. Boyington did.
The Navy Changes Its Mind
Engineers addressed the Corsair’s carrier-landing deficiencies - raising the cockpit and modifying the landing gear - and by late 1943, the Navy had reversed its earlier decision. Corsairs were cleared for carrier operations.
Notably, the British Royal Navy had already put Corsairs on carriers before the Americans did, proving somewhat less troubled by the approach characteristics that had given the U.S. Navy pause.
Korea: A Piston Fighter in the Jet Age
The Corsair was not finished when the Pacific war ended. When Korea began, the F4U went back to combat.
By 1950, the F-86 Sabre and the MiG-15 were rewriting the rules of air combat. The Corsair flew alongside them anyway, and in close air support it excelled. Carrying bombs, rockets, and napalm, it could absorb punishment and bring pilots home. Marine ground commanders in Korea reportedly requested Corsair support above nearly all other options, because the pilots flew with the kind of precision and low-altitude aggression that made the line between air support and direct infantry action almost invisible.
That kind of flying required an airplane that inspired confidence. The Corsair gave it.
Production Run and Legacy
The last F4U Corsair was delivered in January 1953 - a production run spanning 12 years and nearly 13,000 aircraft across three manufacturers. Vought built the majority; Brewster and Goodyear produced licensed variants. It is one of the longest production runs of any American fighter in history.
By the end of the Pacific war, Corsairs had logged more than 64,000 combat sorties and accounted for over 2,000 aerial victories for Marine and Navy pilots, all against that kill ratio of better than 11 to 1.
