How Did the Marines Turn the Corsair Into a Legend?
The Marine Corps flew from land bases - island airstrips and coral runways across the South Pacific - where a long runway made the Corsair’s landing quirks manageable. So the Marines took the airplane the Navy didn’t want.
In February 1943, a Marine squadron flew the Corsair into combat for the first time over the Solomon Islands. Japanese pilots who had been dominating with the nimble Zero suddenly faced something they couldn’t out-fly.
The Zero was light and agile, but it achieved that by leaving things out - no pilot armor, no self-sealing fuel tanks, and far less horsepower than the Double Wasp. Corsair pilots learned quickly not to turn with a Zero.
