U.S. Navy Carrier Certification
American naval aviation studied the British approach and incorporated it. Combined with continued engineering work, the remaining problems were addressed in sequence.
A modified oleo strut resolved the landing bounce by mid-1944. The oil breather issue was corrected. Marines on the ground knew the sound of the Double Wasp, and it meant help was coming.
The aircraft continued in service with multiple air arms into the mid-1950s. In 1969, during the brief conflict between Honduras and El Salvador known as the Soccer War, Corsairs from both air forces engaged each other in air-to-air combat. The last propeller-driven air-to-air kill in recorded military history is attributed to an F4U Corsair pilot over Central America - more than 25 years after the aircraft’s first flight and more than 30 years after the original Bureau of Aeronautics specification was issued in 1938.
