Why the Corsair Has an Inverted Gull Wing

The Corsair’s bent wing was not a stylistic choice. It was an engineering solution to a specific, painful problem.

In the late 1930s, the U.S. Navy contracted Chance Vought Aircraft in Stratford, Connecticut to produce a new carrier-based fighter. Lead designer Rex Beisel chose the most powerful available engine: the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp - 18 cylinders in two rows, producing 2,000 horsepower on takeoff. The P-40 Warhawk flown by the Flying Tigers produced around 1,200 horsepower. The Double Wasp was in a categorically different class.

That engine required a propeller to match: 13 feet, 4 inches in diameter - nearly as wide as a small hangar door. On a carrier aircraft, landing gear has to fold, and legs tall enough to keep that propeller clear of the flight deck on touchdown would be impractically long and structurally fragile.

Beisel’s solution was the inverted gull wing. The wing roots drop sharply downward from the fuselage, then sweep back up and out to the tips, forming a shape like a bent W viewed head-on. By lowering the attachment point, the main gear legs could be kept short while still clearing the propeller from the deck - and the wings still folded for carrier storage.

The result was the most recognizable silhouette in Pacific War aviation.

Why the Navy Rejected the Corsair for Carrier Operations

The same qualities that made the Corsair a formidable weapon made it unforgiving on a moving deck.

The first problem was forward visibility. The long R-2800 engine sat far ahead of the cockpit. On final approach with the nose dropped to follow the glide path, a pilot was essentially looking over the hood of a locomotive, relying on peripheral vision and signals from the landing signals officer.

The second problem was the landing gear. The oleo struts could compress on touchdown and release stored energy, bouncing the aircraft back into the air - directly over the arresting wires and into aircraft spotted ahead.

The third problem emerged slowly: the left wing had a tendency to stall before the right at slow approach speeds. An asymmetric stall at fifty feet, slow and committed to landing, leaves no room for recovery.

In April 1942, the Bureau of Aeronautics declared the Corsair unsuitable for carrier operations and reassigned the type to the Marine Corps.

How the Marines Made the Corsair a Feared Weapon

Marine aviators flew from land bases. They did not need to trap on a carrier deck. What they needed was the fastest, most heavily armed fighter available in the Pacific theater - which is precisely what they had just been given.

The first Marine Corsair unit reached Guadalcanal in February 1943. Marines had seized Henderson Field from the Japanese in August 1942, and the fight to hold it had been continuous ever since. The pilots based there - the Cactus Air Force - contended with malaria, dysentery, and near-constant Japanese air raids as baseline conditions.

The Japanese were running regular formations down from their major base at Rabaul: Mitsubishi G4M Betty bombers escorted by Zero fighters, transiting the island channel American pilots had named the Slot. They were experienced, methodical, and arrived in quantity.

When Corsairs intercepted those formations for the first time, the results surprised both sides.

What Made the Corsair Superior to the Zero

The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was a genuinely exceptional aircraft. Range, agility, and rate of climb all made it dangerous. In turning combat, a skilled Japanese pilot could hold his own against nearly anything the Americans had available.

But the Zero had been built for performance at the expense of survivability - no pilot armor, no self-sealing fuel tanks. Against a slashing, high-speed attack from altitude, those omissions were fatal. The Corsair was faster in the dive, faster in level flight, and faster in a zoom climb back to altitude.

Marine pilots built their tactics around those advantages: climb high, find the incoming formation early, dive through it with all six .50-caliber machine guns firing, then extend and climb back before the Zeros could organize a response. The Origins of “Whistling Death”

The Corsair’s inverted gull wing and the air intakes built into its leading edges produced an unintended acoustic effect at high speed: a howling, mechanical whistle audible from the ground and from other aircraft before the Corsair itself came into view.

Japanese pilots and ground troops learned to recognize the sound. By the time they located the source, the aircraft was already past them - already gone.

Japanese forces named it Whistling Death. The name captured something accurate about how the airplane fought: it did not announce itself, it arrived at high speed from an unexpected angle, and it was gone before the target fully understood what had happened.

Gregory Boyington and the Black Sheep Squadron

Gregory Boyington was not the officer a peacetime military produces willingly. Before America entered the war, he had already resigned his Marine commission and gone to China to fly P-40 Warhawks with the American Volunteer Group - the Flying Tigers - against Japanese forces before the United States was officially involved.

After Pearl Harbor he returned to the Marines, but his record was tangled and his reputation preceded him. Unable to get a command through normal channels, he assembled a group of pilots who had not been assigned to established squadrons - replacements, administrative leftovers, castoffs - and formed VMF-214. His executive officer described the collection as “a bunch of black sheep.” The name became permanent.

Boyington took the Black Sheep Squadron to the Russell Islands in September 1943. Over the following months he became the leading American ace in the Pacific theater, credited with 28 aerial victories - a figure historians have debated, partly due to how kills from his AVG service were counted. He received the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross.

In January 1944, on a strike mission over Rabaul, Boyington was shot down. He survived in the water, was recovered by a Japanese submarine, and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner. When liberated in August 1945, the Medal of Honor was waiting.

How the British Solved the Carrier Landing Problem

While Marines were building their combat record in the Pacific, the British Royal Navy had also received Corsairs - designated the Corsair Mark I through Mark IV. Operational necessity produced what formal analysis had not.

British pilots developed a curved final approach. Rather than flying a straight-in path where the long nose eventually blocked the deck, they flew a continuous curving arc that kept the deck visible over the left shoulder almost to touchdown. Workmanlike rather than elegant, but it worked - consistently enough that the Royal Navy was operating Corsairs from fleet carriers throughout 1943, while the U.S. Navy still classified the type as unsuitable for its own decks.

The Americans caught up. In April 1944, the Navy cleared the Corsair for fleet carrier operations. A small wooden wedge added to the leading edge of the left wing cured the asymmetric stall problem. Modifications to the landing gear addressed the bounce. Accumulated operational experience filled in the rest.

The F4U-4 variant, equipped with a water-injection system that could push the Double Wasp briefly past 2,300 horsepower, was faster and hit harder than anything Japan could put against it.

Production, Combat Record, and Two Wars of Service

When Japan surrendered in August 1945, more than 12,500 Corsairs had been built. Production continued after the war ended, running all the way through 1952 - twelve years of continuous production for a single piston fighter design. The 11-to-1 kill ratio against Japanese aircraft remains one of the highest compiled by any fighter type in the conflict.

When the Korean War began in June 1950, the Corsair was still there. Jet aircraft - the F9F Panther early on, then the F-86 Sabre in the north - took the headlines. But it was the Corsair flying the close air support missions that kept ground forces alive through some of the worst fighting of that war. Flying low, putting rockets and bombs precisely on target, the Corsair did work the early jets could not replicate.

The last American Corsairs were retired by the Naval Reserve in the mid-1950s. The airplane kept flying in other hands.
