The Vought F4U Corsair is the bent-wing, inverted-gull-wing fighter that the U.S. Navy first considered too dangerous for its own carrier decks, then watched become one of the most successful and longest-serving piston fighters America ever built. Designed for pure speed around the massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, it earned two nicknames that tell its whole story: “Whistling Death,” given by Japanese troops for the eerie howl it made in a dive, and “Ensign Eliminator,” given by the Marines for how unforgiving it was to inexperienced pilots. Why Does the Corsair Have Bent Wings?

The Corsair’s story starts in 1938, when the U.S. Navy asked American manufacturers for the fastest carrier fighter they could build. A Connecticut company called Chance Vought took a bold approach: if you want speed, you bolt on the biggest engine available.

That engine was the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp - two rows of nine air-cooled cylinders, 18 in total, producing around 2,000 horsepower at birth and climbing well beyond that as the war went on.

A big engine needs a big propeller. Vought hung a prop over 13 feet in diameter on the nose. That created a problem: with the aircraft sitting on its gear, the prop tips swung dangerously close to the ground.

There were two solutions. Build tall, stilt-like landing gear that risked collapsing on a hard carrier landing, or bend the wings. Vought bent the wings.

The inverted gull wing angles sharply down out of the fuselage, then levels back up where the main gear attaches. This did two things at once:

  • It let the wing meet the fuselage at a clean right angle, reducing drag
  • It allowed a short, stout landing gear leg that still held the giant propeller off the deck

That silhouette - wings like a gull frozen mid-wingbeat - is why you can pick a Corsair out from half a mile away. And the design delivered on the Navy’s demand for speed: in 1940, a Corsair prototype became one of the first American fighters to exceed 400 mph in level flight.

Why Was the Corsair Called “Whistling Death”?

The Corsair had large air intakes set into the leading edges of the bent wings, near the wing roots, feeding the engine and oil coolers. When the aircraft came screaming down in a dive, air rushing through those intakes set up a high, hollow whistle.

Japanese troops on the ground in the Pacific named it “Whistling Death.” By the time you heard the sound, the aircraft was already on top of you with its guns firing. The whistle and the bullets arrived almost together.

Why Did the Marines Call It the “Ensign Eliminator”?

The Marines had their own name - “Ensign Eliminator” - and it came from a harder truth. Early on, the Corsair was a genuine handful, especially aboard a carrier.

Carrier landings demand precision: you’re planting a heavy fighter with enormous engine torque onto a steel deck pitching on the swells and moving away at 30 knots. You need to see the deck and the signal officer. But the Corsair’s long nose, stretched out by that huge engine and cowling, blocked the pilot’s forward view in the nose-high landing attitude.

The early Corsair had other bad habits down low and slow:

  • The left wing tended to drop without warning near a stall, thanks to engine torque and prop wash
  • The stiff landing gear had a bouncy quality - touch down a hair too fast and it would hop you back into the air

The Navy concluded the aircraft was too much for its carrier decks at that stage and handed large numbers to the U.S. Marine Corps to fly from island airstrips instead. That accident of history made a legend.

How Successful Was the Corsair in Combat?

Flying from land bases in the Solomon Islands and up through the Pacific, the Marines could simply fly and fight the Corsair without the carrier complications. In their hands it was devastating - fast, hard-climbing, and able to absorb battle damage thanks to its air-cooled radial, which had no vulnerable liquid-cooling system to shoot up. It hit hard with six .50 caliber guns mounted in the wings.

Marine squadrons ran up a staggering record: roughly 11 enemy aircraft shot down for every Corsair lost in air-to-air combat. That kind of ratio comes from a great airplane flown by brave, skilled pilots.

What Made the Corsair Last So Long?

Most piston fighters became obsolete within a couple of years of WWII’s end as jets arrived. The Corsair didn’t. Production continued into the early 1950s - one of the longest production runs of any American piston fighter, spanning more than a decade.

It went on to a second war in Korea, where jets fought high overhead but ground troops still needed a tough aircraft that could carry bombs and rockets, loiter low, absorb ground fire, and come home. The Corsair flew close air support magnificently.

The most remarkable example came in 1952, when Marine pilot Jesse Folmar, flying a propeller-driven Corsair, was jumped by Soviet-built MiG-15 jet fighters. By every expectation that should have ended him. Instead, Folmar maneuvered his Corsair, got his guns on one of the jets, and shot it down - a piston fighter downing a jet in air-to-air combat, something that almost never happened in aviation history. He was shot down shortly after and rescued from the water, but he had made his point.

Why Is the Corsair Still Flying at Oshkosh?

Every summer, Corsairs from museums, private collections, and warbird organizations gather at Wittman Field in Oshkosh for AirVenture - and they fly. When one taxis past, the long nose still swings left and right as the pilot weaves to see down the taxiway, unable to look straight ahead over that cowling.

When a Corsair makes a pass down the showline with some speed up, you can still hear it under the roar of the engine: the same high, hollow whistle those men on the ground heard in the Pacific, seven or eight decades later.

Every one of these aircraft flies because someone refused to let it die - restorers who found wrecks in jungles or corroded hulks behind hangars and spent years and fortunes rebuilding the Double Wasp cylinder by cylinder and getting the gear to lock down every single time. They are the reason the whistle survives at all.
