That engine was the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp - eighteen cylinders in two rows, producing an enormous 2,000 horsepower. To convert that power into thrust, Beisel needed a massive propeller: a Hamilton Standard three-blade unit measuring more than 13 feet across, taller than most hangar doors when stood on end.

Here was the conflict. A propeller that large needs serious ground clearance, which normally means tall landing gear. But long, spindly legs are a liability on a carrier, where landings are controlled crashes and gear can fold under the impact.

Beisel’s solution was the inverted gull wing. The wing sweeps down from the fuselage and back up toward the tip, forming a shape like a giant W seen head-on. At the lowest point of that bend, he mounted short, strong landing gear - stubby legs that still lifted the belly and that giant prop clear of the deck.

The Marines flew from land - dirt strips and coral runways on islands like Guadalcanal, Munda, and Bougainville - where carrier-landing troubles didn’t apply. From those bases, the Corsair made its name.

The most famous unit was Marine Fighting Squadron 214, the Black Sheep, led by former Flying Tiger Gregory “Pappy” Boyington - called “Pappy” because at 31 he was ancient next to his young pilots. Boyington and his squadron fought Corsairs over the Solomons, and the stories that came home turned the bent-wing fighter into a household name.

The numbers backed the headlines. By the war’s end in the Pacific, Corsairs were credited with more than 2,000 aircraft shot down against roughly 200 lost in air combat - about an 11-to-1 ratio, a staggering figure for a fighter the Navy had nearly abandoned.

How Did the Corsair Finally Get on Carriers?

The Navy wouldn’t operate the Corsair from carriers, but the British Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm would. Receiving Corsairs through Lend-Lease, British pilots faced the same landing troubles - and solved them.

Their decks were often smaller, so they couldn’t afford to bounce. Instead of a straight-in approach where the long nose blocked the view of the ship, they flew a continuous curving turn all the way down to the deck. Banking through that turn, the pilot could see the landing signal officer out the side of the canopy until the last moment, then roll level and chop the throttle.
