A VFR in-flight diversion is one of the most important skills a private pilot can develop, yet most pilots practice it once during training and rarely rehearse it again. The core challenge isn’t finding the alternate airport - it’s recognizing when to commit to diverting and doing it early enough that you still have options. The pilot who acts while fuel, altitude, and visibility are still in their favor has a dozen airports to choose from. The one who waits does not.

When Should You Decide to Divert?

The most common trigger is weather that doesn’t match the forecast. A terminal aerodrome forecast showing temporary conditions between noon and three means little if the ceilings drop earlier and lower than predicted. The danger zone is when conditions are not yet zero - you can still see five to eight miles ahead, your destination is only 60 miles away, and the math seems to work.

This is exactly when judgment matters more than math.

A useful personal standard: if staying on course requires continuous compromises on altitude, visibility, or routing just to remain legal, divert. Not because caution is timid - because the decision is cleanest when you still have fuel, altitude, and multiple outs. A pilot diverting at 3,000 feet with 30 minutes of reserve fuel and 8 miles of visibility has flexibility. A pilot scud-running at 800 feet with 5 miles of visibility has nearly run out of choices.

What Are the Steps Once You’ve Decided to Divert?

The sequence is: aviate, pick, estimate, communicate, navigate.

Aviate first. Trim the airplane and manage your workload before touching the chart or radio. Cockpit task saturation during an unfolding cross-country problem can pull attention away from actually flying the aircraft - a dangerous trade.

Pick an alternate airport. You’re looking for the closest airport with an acceptable runway that gets you on the ground before the situation worsens. That’s the entire criteria. Don’t optimize for fuel type, FBO amenities, or runway length beyond what your aircraft needs. Overthinking this step costs time you may not have.

How Do You Find and Evaluate Airports on the Sectional?

On a VFR sectional, blue airport symbols are towered fields; magenta are non-towered. The Chart Supplement - which should be downloaded for your region plus a reasonable radius on either side of your planned route before departure - gives you runway lengths, fuel availability, traffic pattern altitude, and contact frequencies for every field.

Moving-map avionics can help, but practice the sectional method regardless. Avionics have dead batteries and outdated databases. The FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS) expect you to navigate with paper. Know both methods.

How Do You Estimate Distance and Time to Your Alternate?

Use your thumb. On a standard sectional chart, the distance from thumb tip to first knuckle is approximately 10 nautical miles. Lay it between your position and the candidate airport and count thumb widths. It’s not precise, but it’s close enough for an in-flight diversion decision.

Convert distance to time using groundspeed, not airspeed. If you’ve been tracking progress against checkpoints, you already have a sense of what the wind is doing. Example: indicating 115 knots with a headwind giving you 100 knots over the ground, 25 miles to your alternate is 15 minutes. That math works without a calculator.

Then check fuel. VFR day legal minimum is 30 minutes of fuel remaining at normal cruise power on landing - that’s the floor, not the goal. If your time to the alternate is 15 minutes and you have 45 minutes of fuel, you’re in reasonable shape. If you have 25 minutes of fuel, you have a separate, more urgent problem.

What Radio Calls Do You Make When Diverting?

If you’re on flight following with Approach or Center, simply state that you need to divert and name your alternate. They can verify weather at your new destination, provide vectors if useful, and they already have your transponder code in the system. This is one of the strongest arguments for requesting flight following on every cross-country - when something develops, you’re already in a conversation with someone who can help.

If you’re not on flight following and the situation has crossed into urgency or emergency, use 121.5 - the emergency frequency monitored by the FAA and most military radar facilities. Identify yourself, state your position, describe the situation, and state your intentions. Calling on 121.5 does not commit you to a formal emergency declaration. It connects you to help.

For a straightforward reroute on a clear day, a quick call to Flight Service or a UNICOM check at your new destination for the active runway and local weather is good practice.

How Do You Navigate to Your Alternate?

Use pilotage as your primary tool. Identify landmarks between your current position and the new airport - a river, an interstate, a town with a distinctive highway junction - and cross-check them against the sectional as you cover ground.

Set a new heading and account for wind. Even a rough wind correction beats pointing at the airport and letting the crosswind walk you off course. If you’ve held a correction all flight, you already know which direction the wind is pushing. Apply that to your new heading.

When you’re within 10 to 15 miles of your alternate, get the airport information out. For non-towered fields, find the CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency); for towered fields, get the tower frequency. Pull the current weather from the ATIS, ASOS, or AWOS if available. Know the active runway before entering the pattern.

Arriving at an unfamiliar airport without knowing the active runway and traffic in the pattern sets up a potential conflict on final. Brief the arrival, even if it’s abbreviated.

What If Weather Isn’t the Reason to Divert?

Fuel is the second most common reason. If consumption is higher than planned - from climbing above your planned altitude, a stronger-than-forecast headwind, or a preflight fuel check that wasn’t thorough - and you won’t reach your destination with comfortable reserves, land short and refuel. This is airmanship, not failure.

Mechanical concerns are reason to start looking for the nearest suitable field immediately. An instrument behaving strangely, a change in engine note, or oil pressure moving in the wrong direction all warrant action. You don’t need to declare an emergency to make a precautionary landing. Many accidents trace back to a pilot who decided to “just make it” when an earlier diversion would have resolved the problem on the ground.

What Does the Examiner Expect on the Checkride Diversion Task?

The FAA ACS diversion task wants to see a structured response: pick up the sectional with confidence, make a reasonable distance and time estimate, verify fuel, communicate, then navigate to the alternate without drama. The examiner isn’t testing your GPS - they’re testing your ability to build a new plan while the airplane is still moving.

A useful preflight habit for any cross-country: before departure, identify every airport within 10 to 15 miles on either side of your planned route and note their frequencies. The mental work is half done before you ever need it.

When you land at your alternate, fuel up and get an updated weather picture. If your destination is clear and you have reserves, continue. If conditions aren’t improving, arrange overnight accommodations and fly in the morning. Pilots who do this are the ones telling hangar stories the next day.

If you have passengers, a brief, calm explanation is all they need: the weather ahead is lower than you want to fly through, you’re stopping while it clears, you’ll be on the ground in a few minutes. Confidence and information keep nervous passengers calm.
