The whole reason a TRSA exists is that the airport is busy - busy enough that someone decided radar sequencing would make it safer. If you blast through the middle VFR with the radios quiet, you’re legal, but you’re also the one airplane nobody is watching on purpose. You’re the unknown that the controller points out to an airliner as “traffic, type and altitude unknown, not talking to me.”
The service is voluntary, but it’s good, it’s free, and it’s the entire point. The professional move is to participate. Only the radar service in the surrounding rings is voluntary.
Thinking you can’t leave. As a participating VFR aircraft, you can decline a vector or instruction you don’t like and cancel radar service. Because participation is voluntary, you retain your pilot-in-command authority in a way you don’t inside a Bravo or Charlie clearance. Assuming every magenta layer cake is a TRSA. It’s the opposite - most solid-magenta layer cakes are Class Charlie; TRSAs are the rarer bird. The fail-safe move is to read the chart supplement before you go - it will state outright whether the airport is a TRSA, list the approach frequencies, and give the exact floor and ceiling for each ring.

Training pushes us to focus on the rules - what’s required, the exact words, the hard line you can’t cross. That’s necessary; you have to know the regulations cold. But flying well isn’t about doing the legal minimum.
