The Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) contains everything needed to make an informed go or no-go decision - but only if you read every change group, not just the base conditions. Most weather-related accidents don’t happen because pilots skipped the weather check. They happen because pilots read TAFs optimistically, treating the TEMPO and BECMG groups as unlikely footnotes rather than realistic possibilities.
What Is a TAF and How Is It Structured?
The TAF is issued by the National Weather Service for airports with scheduled air service and high-traffic general aviation airports. The word “temporary” implies brief and unlikely. Pilots process it as a footnote - a maybe, an outside possibility worth noting and moving past. That instinct is wrong and dangerous.
A TEMPO group covering four hours, with ceiling events that can each last up to an hour, means your arrival window could land squarely in 500-foot broken ceilings and one-mile visibility in thunderstorms. For a VFR pilot, that is not an inconvenience. That is a wall.

How Do You Brief a TAF Systematically?
Read the TAF in time blocks, not as a single narrative. Lay out a mental timeline with your departure, en-route time, and planned arrival clearly marked. Map every change group against that timeline.
For each change group, ask three questions:
- Does my flight window overlap this group?
- If it does, what are the worst conditions I might encounter?
- What is my alternate if those conditions materialize?
For a TEMPO group, question three requires a specific, real answer: a named alternate airport, with fuel to reach it, and a TAF showing acceptable conditions during that same window. “I’ll figure it out” is not a plan.
Scenario: VFR Cross-Country Into a TEMPO Window
Consider a TAF for KOKC (Oklahoma City) with a planned arrival of 1700 Zulu:
- Base (from 1200Z): Wind 250 at 12 knots. Visibility greater than 6 miles. Few clouds at 2,500 feet.
- FM 1500Z: Wind 200 at 18, gusting 28. Visibility 5 miles in rain. Broken clouds at 1,500 feet.
- TEMPO 1500Z–2000Z: Visibility 1 mile in thunderstorms and heavy rain. Overcast at 500 feet.
- FM 2000Z: Wind 250 at 10. Visibility greater than 6. Few clouds at 3,000 feet.
At 1700 Zulu, you’re arriving into broken ceilings at 1,500 feet with rain - already marginal VFR. You’re also inside a five-hour TEMPO window showing overcast at 500 feet and one-mile visibility in thunderstorms. If that TEMPO fires during your approach, the airport is effectively closed to a VFR pilot. With a degraded fuel state and no alternate plan, this is a serious situation.
This is how weather accidents develop: not from skipping the weather check, but from reading it optimistically.
What TAF Details Do Most Pilots Overlook?
AMD (Amended): When AMD appears at the top of a TAF, the forecast has been revised mid-cycle because conditions changed enough to warrant it. TAFs are issued every six hours, but amendments can come at any time. Always re-check before departure - an AMD almost always means the weather is doing something the original forecast didn’t anticipate.
WS (Wind Shear): The wind shear line appears inside the TAF body and is easy to skim past. WS030/25040KT indicates wind shear below 3,000 feet, with winds from 250 at 40 knots at the shear level.
