The secret to flying it well isn’t strength or staring at the altimeter - it’s setting a precise sight picture against the horizon, keeping your eyes outside, and correcting altitude with small bank adjustments rather than pitch. Most pilots struggle not because the bank is hard, but because they pull back too early and climb.

What Does the ACS Require for a Steep Turn?

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) spell out exactly what a private pilot applicant must demonstrate. You establish a bank of approximately 45 degrees and hold it within plus or minus 5 degrees. You maintain altitude within plus or minus 100 feet, airspeed within plus or minus 10 knots, and roll out on your entry heading within plus or minus 10 degrees.

Then, almost always, you reverse it and fly the whole turn in the opposite direction.

Read on paper, it sounds mechanical: bank, altitude, airspeed, heading. Four numbers. But the maneuver makes you do about five things at once, and the moment you fixate on any single one, the other four fall apart.

Why Does the Airplane Want to Descend in a Steep Turn?

When you roll into a 45-degree bank, the lift your wings produce is no longer pointing straight up. It’s tilted. Part of it now pulls you sideways around the turn - that’s what actually turns the airplane. But the vertical part of the lift, the part holding you up against gravity, just got smaller.

If you do nothing, the airplane starts to descend. Every time.

To hold altitude, you have to make the wings produce more total lift, and the only way to do that in a turn is to pull back slightly and increase the angle of attack. At 45 degrees of bank, you and the airplane are pulling about 1.4 times the force of gravity (1.4 G’s). That’s not dramatic, but it’s real, and you’ll feel it in the seat.

Pulling back adds induced drag - the drag that comes with making lift. So the airplane wants to slow down and sink at the same time. In many trainers you’ll add a touch of power rolling in to hold airspeed: a couple hundred RPM in a Cessna 172, then take it right back out as you roll level.

Why Do Most Pilots Climb Instead of Descend?

Here’s the twist that trips people up: despite everything above, most students climb in a steep turn. It feels backwards - if the airplane wants to sink, why does the altimeter go up?

The answer is in what your hands do as you roll in. Watch a student and you’ll see the same thing almost every time: they roll into the bank and pull back simultaneously. But at 20 or 30 degrees of bank, that back pressure is more than the airplane needs. The nose balloons up, and they’re 40, 60, even 100 feet high before they’ve settled into the turn.

The timing of the back pressure matters more than the amount. Don’t pull as you roll in. Roll in first, get the bank established, and let the back pressure come in as the bank steepens - not before it.

Think of it as leading with the ailerons and following with the elevator. Roll, then squeeze. Not roll and yank together.

How Do I Set Up and Enter a Steep Turn?

Walk through the entry step by step:

  1. Clear the area first. This is a big maneuver - you’ll sweep 360 degrees, sometimes 720, and you can’t see behind you while doing it. Perform two clearing turns or a couple of solid 90-degree scans. Collision avoidance and division of attention are right there in the ACS, and clearing is the very first item. Skip it and you can fly a flawless turn and still hand the examiner a reason to fail you.
  2. Pick a reference and note your heading. While clearing, choose a section line, road, distant mountain, or a cloud on the horizon to roll out on. Note your heading on the compass or heading indicator - that’s your rollout target.
  3. Set your entry speed. Get to maneuvering speed or whatever entry speed your instructor uses, comfortably below the yellow arc so light turbulence won’t hurt anything.
  4. Roll in smoothly and coordinated, with a little rudder matching the aileron. As the bank passes 30 degrees toward 45, you’ll feel the airplane start to settle - that’s your cue for gentle back pressure. You’re trimming the picture, not hauling on it.

Should I Fly the Altimeter or the Horizon?

Fly the nose, not the altimeter.

In a 45-degree bank, there’s a specific relationship between the top of your glareshield and the horizon - where the horizon cuts across your cowling. Burn that sight picture into memory on a good turn, then hold it. If you keep the pitch attitude and bank angle steady against the horizon, the altimeter takes care of itself.

Chasing the altimeter is a trap because the altimeter lags - it tells you where you were a second or two ago. Fly by it and you’re always correcting for a problem that has already passed, sawing the airplane up and down, plus 100, minus 100, while the examiner watches you stare inside.

Your scan should run roughly 80 percent outside on the sight picture and bank against the horizon, and 20 percent inside confirming altitude, airspeed, and bank on the panel. Outside is where the airplane actually is. The panel just confirms what the horizon already told you.

How Do I Correct Altitude Deviations in a Steep Turn?

The key reframing: bank controls altitude in the steep turn. Manage the bank, and altitude comes along for the ride.

If you’re climbing: don’t shove the yoke forward. Add a couple of degrees of bank. Steepening slightly tilts more lift into the turn, reduces the vertical component, and lets the nose settle back down. Once you’re back on altitude, shallow back to 45 degrees.

If you’re descending: don’t just pull harder. Pulling without adjusting the bank tightens the turn and loads the wing, marching you toward an accelerated stall. Instead, shallow the bank a couple of degrees, let the vertical lift catch you and arrest the descent, then roll back to 45 degrees.

Make the corrections small - 2 to 3 degrees, not 30. Most students try to fix altitude with pitch and bank with aileron as two separate problems. In a steep turn they’re the same problem.

What Does a Good Steep Turn Look Like on the Checkride?

Picture it. The examiner says, “Show me a steep turn to the left, then reverse to the right.” Your stomach tightens - that’s normal.

You clear the area with two good clearing turns and note your heading: 090, east. You roll into the left bank smoothly, feeding in back pressure as the bank builds, and catch the sight picture with the horizon sitting right on the cowling.

Ten seconds in, you feel yourself getting a touch high. No panic - you add 2 degrees of bank, the nose settles, back to 45. As you come around to your entry heading, you fly through your own wake: a little bump of turbulence. That bump means you held your altitude all the way around - you flew a clean circle back into your own wake. It’s a good sign.

You lead the rollout by about half your bank angle, so around 20 degrees before 090 you start rolling out, releasing back pressure as you go, and settle wings level right on east.

Then, without pausing to congratulate yourself, you roll straight into the turn the other way. That left-to-right transition is where tired hands make mistakes: as you pass wings level, the back pressure you held for the left turn is suddenly too much and the nose balloons again. Consciously relax that pressure through the level point and rebuild it as the right bank comes in.

What Are the Most Common Steep Turn Mistakes?

  • Forgetting the rudder. The roll in and roll out need coordinated rudder. Once established, a properly trimmed steep turn is nearly neutral on the rudder - but the entry and exit need your feet. Watch the ball, or better, watch the nose track cleanly without skidding.
  • Fixating. Locking onto one instrument. The ACS calls it division of attention, and the steep turn is built to test it. Go heads-down and you’ll nail altitude but blow the bank, or hold the bank and lose 200 feet.
  • Letting airspeed decay. Holding altitude purely with pitch and no power bleeds off speed and shrinks your stall margin. Add that touch of power and keep the speed where it belongs.
  • Overbanking. When the altimeter starts moving, many pilots unconsciously let the bank creep past 45 toward 50 or 55 because it feels like doing something. But steeper bank means more G, more back pressure, higher stall speed, and less margin. If it’s getting away from you, the answer is almost never more bank - reset to 45 and fix it with small inputs.

How Should I Practice Steep Turns?

Practice at altitude with a hard deck at least 1,500 feet above the ground. Pick a heading and a landmark before every single turn. Do them in both directions every time - everybody has a good side and a bad side, and the examiner will ask for your bad side.

The most effective drill: fly a few turns without looking at the altimeter at all. Cover it if you have to. Just fly the sight picture and the bank against the horizon for the full 360, then check where you ended up. Most pilots hold altitude better with the instrument covered than while staring at it, because they finally trust the horizon. Once your eyes and hands learn the picture, the numbers fall into standard on their own.

The steep turn isn’t really testing whether you can bank 45 degrees - anybody can crank an airplane over. It’s testing whether you can hold a precise state, notice a small deviation early, and correct it smoothly while keeping your eyes outside. Master that and you become the kind of pilot who catches the deviation at 20 feet instead of 100 - on every flight, for the rest of your flying life.
