Learn to read a standard weather briefing in order - six elements, one go/no-go framework - so you can make a confident preflight decision on every cross-country.
A standard weather briefing is not a document you scan. It is a decision tree with a specific shape, built in a specific order, for a reason. Work through each element in sequence, and by the end you have everything you need to answer one question: is today a go?
What Is a Standard Weather Briefing and Who Provides It?
Leidos Flight Service is the FAA-contracted provider for pilot weather briefings in the United States. When you call 1-800-WX-BRIEF or pull a briefing on the Leidos website, the information arrives in the same order every time: adverse conditions, VFR flight not recommended, synopsis, current conditions, en route forecast, destination forecast, winds aloft, NOTAMs, and ATC delays.
That sequence is not arbitrary. Each element answers a progressively more specific question about your flight. The first elements ask whether you should be flying at all. The later ones ask whether you can fly your specific route, at your specific altitude, to your specific destination, at the time you plan to arrive.
Element 1: What Are the Adverse Conditions?
The briefing opens with adverse conditions because that is where it belongs. This section covers anything that could affect flight safety during your planned window: convective SIGMETs, icing, severe or extreme turbulence, and areas where instrument meteorological conditions are already in place or rapidly developing.
Adverse conditions are regional, not filtered to your specific route. A convective SIGMET that appears here might be 150 miles south of your planned track. That does not mean you dismiss it - it means you note it and return to it when you evaluate your route specifically. Think of adverse conditions as the headline. The rest of the briefing fills in the story.
If this section is clean, that is genuinely good news. It is not, however, permission to stop reading.
Element 2: What Does “VFR Flight Not Recommended” Actually Mean?
VFR flight not recommended - abbreviated VNR - is a judgment call issued by a human briefer or generated by the system when conditions are expected to fall below basic VFR minimums somewhere along your route.
It is not a regulatory prohibition. The regulations do not forbid you from flying when VNR has been issued. But you made that decision with full knowledge of the advisory, and you own what follows.
What VNR should do is raise your threshold. You now need a very convincing picture from the remaining elements before committing to go. When you see it, pause and ask: what specifically triggered this advisory? The answer is always in the elements that follow.
Element 3: Why Does the Synopsis Matter More Than It Seems?
The synopsis is the big picture - synoptic scale. Where are the frontal systems? What direction are they moving and how fast? Is that low-pressure center tracking toward your destination or away from it?
Students skip the synopsis because it feels abstract. That is a mistake. The synopsis provides the atmospheric context for everything else in the briefing. Without it, every subsequent piece of weather data is a snapshot without a frame.
If a cold front is expected to cross your destination airport at 2:00 p.m. and your planned arrival is 3:00 p.m. on a four-hour cross-country, the synopsis just told you your weather window is a closing door. Current conditions at 6:00 a.m. might look fine. The synopsis is telling you they will not stay that way.
Burn this distinction into memory: current conditions tell you where the weather is; the synopsis tells you where it’s going.
Element 4: How Do You Read METARs and PIREPs for a Cross-Country?
Current conditions draw from METARs (Meteorological Aerodrome Reports) and PIREPs (Pilot Reports). Pull METARs for your departure airport, your destination, and your alternates. Check PIREPs along your route.
Reading Sky Condition in a METAR
The sky condition group tells you where the ceiling is. A ceiling is a broken or overcast layer. Broken means five-eighths to seven-eighths sky coverage; overcast is eight-eighths. Layer heights are reported in hundreds of feet above ground level - a broken layer listed as BKN020 sits at 2,000 feet AGL. For a cross-country, ask whether that ceiling gives you enough vertical clearance along your entire route, especially where terrain rises.
Visibility and Personal Minimums
Visibility in a METAR is in statute miles. Three statute miles is the legal VFR minimum in controlled airspace. But legal minimum and comfortable flying are two different things. Know your personal minimums and hold yourself to them, especially on an early cross-country.
Temperature-Dewpoint Spread
When temperature and dewpoint converge within three to four degrees Celsius of each other, conditions are ripe for fog or low stratus - particularly overnight and in the early morning hours. If the spread is narrow at your destination and you are arriving later in the day, watch how that picture evolves through the morning TAF updates.
How to Weight a PIREP
A PIREP filed 45 minutes ago by a Cessna 172 at 4,500 feet reporting light turbulence over a ridge on your route is more actionable than any model forecast. It is evidence from someone who was actually there.
The critical caveat: filing is voluntary for VFR pilots. No PIREPs on your route does not mean a clean bill of health - it means silence. Silence means no one has reported anything, which could indicate fine conditions or simply that nobody has been out there yet. Those are very different things.
Element 5: What Are AIRMETs and SIGMETs, and Which Ones Ground You?
The en route forecast covers what you will actually fly through between departure and destination. AIRMETs and SIGMETs are the primary products here.
AIRMETs
AIRMETs (Airmen’s Meteorological Information) are issued by the Aviation Weather Center for conditions significant to aircraft but below the threshold of a SIGMET. There are three types:
- AIRMET Sierra covers instrument meteorological conditions and mountain obscuration. For a VFR-only pilot, Sierra demands the most attention - it means below-VFR conditions are expected or already occurring somewhere in the affected area.
- AIRMET Tango covers turbulence, sustained surface winds above 30 knots, and low-level wind shear. An hour of moderate chop in a fixed-gear trainer without autopilot takes something out of you. Know your tolerance before you are already in it.
- AIRMET Zulu covers icing and freezing levels. If you are flying an aircraft with no de-icing or anti-icing equipment, Zulu means staying out of the clouds and out of any precipitation at or above the freezing level. That is not a suggestion.
SIGMETs and Convective SIGMETs
SIGMETs (Significant Meteorological Information) are issued for conditions hazardous to all aircraft: severe turbulence, severe icing, widespread dust storms, and volcanic ash. Convective SIGMETs are issued specifically for significant thunderstorm activity, convection-associated turbulence, or large hail. If a convective SIGMET covers any portion of your planned route, you are in a serious conversation with yourself about whether today is a go day.
Winds Aloft
For a low-altitude cross-country in a trainer, check the 3,000-foot and 6,000-foot wind levels. Factor direction and speed into your fuel burn and time en route. A headwind that adds 20 minutes to a two-hour flight means more fuel consumed than planned. Wind direction also tells you something about the airmass you are flying through - which connects directly back to the synopsis.
Element 6: How Do You Read a TAF for Your Destination?
The TAF (Terminal Aerodrome Forecast) describes expected conditions within a five-statute-mile radius of the airport and looks forward 24 to 30 hours. TAFs are issued for airports with instrument approaches and sufficient traffic to warrant the coverage.
Key TAF Groups
- FM (from): from this time forward, these are the expected conditions.
- TEMPO: temporary fluctuations expected to last less than one hour at a time and cover less than half the forecast period.
- BECMG: a gradual transition to the listed conditions during a specified window.
- PROB30/PROB40: probability groups. PROB30 is worth noting. PROB40 approaches coin-flip territory - take it seriously.
TAFs are updated every six hours and amended whenever conditions change significantly. If your planned arrival is 4:00 p.m. and the TAF shows an FM group starting at 3:30 p.m. with a 500-foot overcast ceiling and three-quarter-mile visibility in mist, that means two things: you need an alternate in your planning, and your fuel load must support a divert without an emergency.
There is no regulatory requirement for a VFR cross-country to have a filed alternate. But planning without one assumes the forecast holds perfectly. The forecast never holds perfectly.
What Do NOTAMs Cover That Charts Don’t?
NOTAMs (Notices to Air Missions) capture changes that do not appear in standard charts: runway closures, taxiway construction, instrument approaches temporarily out of service, and Temporary Flight Restrictions.
TFRs are the one that bites unprepared pilots. Presidential movement, major sporting events, military operations, and wildfire suppression can all produce a TFR with relatively short notice. Flying into a TFR is not a minor event - it can involve military intercepts, FAA enforcement action, and worse.
For your departure and destination airports, check whether your planned runway is open and whether instrument approaches are in service, even if you intend to fly visually. If the weather closes in and you need an approach, you want to know it is available before you are already airborne.
How Do You Turn a Completed Briefing into a Go/No-Go Decision?
After working through every element, the decision belongs to the pilot in command - not the instructor, not the passenger, not the flight school desk. The following three-question framework drives the call.
Question 1: Is the weather within my personal minimums for the full flight window?
Not just at departure time - at the time you arrive at your destination, with a reasonable buffer for delay. Work the forecast forward through your entire route and planned schedule.
Question 2: Am I current and proficient for these specific conditions?
If there is a crosswind forecast at your destination, when did you last practice crosswind landings? If there is turbulence in the en route section, are you comfortable handling that kind of air in that airplane? Currency on paper and proficiency in practice are different things.
Question 3: Do I have an out?
If something does not look right en route, where are you going? Is that airport open? What is the weather there right now? Do you have enough fuel to get there with reserves intact?
If the answer to any of these three questions is no - or even I’m not sure - you are not done with that briefing yet.
File a VFR flight plan before you depart. It takes four minutes and puts search and rescue on notice if you do not arrive where planned. The Airmen Certification Standards for the private pilot certificate require demonstrating the ability to obtain, read, and apply weather information for a cross-country flight. Your examiner will ask about this process. The actual weather on your first solo cross-country will ask about it in a way no oral exam can.
Build the habit now. Pull the briefing in order. Read every element. And if today is not a good weather day, pick a different day.
