A thorough pre-flight weather briefing is one of the most tested and most misunderstood skills in private pilot training. Knowing all nine, documenting them, and explaining your decision-making process is what the examiner is actually looking for on your checkride.
What Are the Three Types of Weather Briefings?
The FAA recognizes three types of briefings, and choosing the right one for the situation is testable knowledge.
The standard briefing is the complete picture. Request it any time you haven’t already received a briefing from another source, or when enough time has passed that your previous briefing is no longer current. This is your primary planning tool.
The abbreviated briefing supplements a standard briefing you already have. Use it to update specific elements - for example, checking whether destination conditions have changed since a brief you received two hours earlier. It does not replace a full standard briefing, and using it as a shortcut to skip the standard is incorrect procedure.
The outlook briefing is for planning purposes only, intended for departures more than six hours away. It gives a general picture of what conditions might look like, but it’s not actionable for go/no-go decisions.
Where Do You Get an Official Weather Briefing?
The official source is Leidos Flight Service, the FAA’s contracted provider for flight services in the United States. Their briefing number is 1-800-WX-BRIEF (1-800-992-7433). Briefings are also available through their web portal at 1800wxbrief.com and their mobile app.
For the checkride, the correct answer to “where did you get your weather?” includes that you obtained a standard briefing through Flight Service. Apps like ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot are excellent supplemental tools, but most of them state in their own terms of service that they do not constitute a complete briefing. The examiner knows the difference.
What Are All Nine Elements of a Standard Briefing?
Element 1: Adverse Conditions
The briefer leads with anything that significantly impacts your route or destination. This includes SIGMETs, convective activity, icing, severe turbulence, and Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) along your corridor.
This is also where you may hear the phrase “VFR flight not recommended.” Write it down when you hear it. It doesn’t prohibit flight - the go/no-go decision remains entirely yours - but it documents that you were informed that IMC exists or is forecast along your route. If you fly into IMC after receiving that advisory and something goes wrong, that note in the briefing record follows you.
Element 2: Synopsis
The synopsis is the big picture: where frontal systems are, what pressure patterns are doing, whether a low is moving up the coast. Students often skip past this to get to destination conditions, but that’s a mistake.
The synopsis tells you whether conditions are improving or deteriorating, and it gives you context for every other element in the brief. Understanding why the weather is what it is helps you evaluate whether the forecast will hold or fall apart before you land.
Element 3: Current Conditions
This element covers your METARs (Meteorological Terminal Aviation Routine Weather Reports) and SPECIs (Special Observations). METARs are issued every hour at most automated stations. SPECIs are issued between scheduled observations when conditions change significantly - a ceiling dropping below 1,000 feet, visibility dropping below 3 miles, a wind shift of more than 45 degrees, or any change that could affect landing operations.

A note on automated stations: ASOS (Automated Surface Observing System) and AWOS (Automated Weather Observing System) generate most METARs and are accurate for what they measure, but they cannot detect tornadoes, do not reliably detect freezing drizzle in some configurations, can miss virga, and cannot assess snow or ice on the runway surface. Stations with human observers report things automated systems miss - it’s worth knowing which airports on your route are human-augmented versus fully automated.
Element 4: Enroute Forecast
This is the forecast for the airspace along your planned route - TAFs (Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts) for airports along the way and graphical AIRMETs for icing, turbulence, and IFR conditions along your corridor.
TAFs are issued for airports with a certain level of instrument operations, cover a 5 statute mile radius around the airport, and run 24 or 30 hours depending on the station. The format looks similar to a METAR, but the distinction matters: a METAR is an observation; a TAF is a forecast.
Several TAF change indicators are tested knowledge:
- FM (From) - at a specific time, conditions change to what follows
- TEMPO - conditions are expected to temporarily vary from the prevailing forecast for less than one hour at a time

Element 5: Destination Forecast
The TAF for your destination and nearby airports you might need to divert to. This is also where you think through your alternates - even in VFR conditions.
If your destination goes below minimums while you’re enroute and you don’t have a plan, you’re already behind the airplane. What’s the nearest airport with better weather? Have you checked its forecast? Knowing the destination forecast means understanding your options if your intended field becomes unavailable.
Element 6: Winds and Temperatures Aloft
The winds aloft forecast covers specific altitudes at specific stations and is valid at specific times. Knowing the wind at your planned cruising altitude lets you calculate groundspeed, fuel burn, and time enroute accurately. A 20-knot headwind at 6,500 feet can add 30 minutes to a flight you planned for 90 - and you need to know that before you’re airborne.
Winds aloft also provide temperature data for density altitude calculations and can reveal wind shear between altitudes. A 40-knot flow at 9,000 feet with nearly calm conditions at 6,000 can produce significant turbulence at that boundary. The winds aloft forecast is about ride quality and structural load, not just navigation.
Element 7: NOTAMs
Notices to Air Missions tell you that the approach lights at your destination are out of service, a taxiway is closed, a VOR is under maintenance, or a TFR is active near your route. NOTAMs are dense reading, but three categories matter most:
TFR NOTAMs can appear with very little notice - a VIP movement, wildfire, or disaster response. Flying into a TFR can result in a military intercept and an enforcement action affecting your certificate.
Airport and navigation NOTAMs cover fields on your route. Check them for every airport you plan to use, including alternates.
FDC NOTAMs (Flight Data Center) are regulatory in nature. They amend published charts, modify instrument approach procedures, and establish airspace changes. If a minimum altitude on an approach procedure at your destination has changed, it lives in an FDC NOTAM.
Element 8: ATC Delays
Ground stops and ground delay programs are more directly relevant to IFR operations, but they’re part of the standard briefing and relevant to VFR planning. If a ground stop is in effect at your destination, that affects your entire plan.
Element 9: Pilot-Requested Information
At the end of the briefing, the specialist asks if there’s anything else you need. Use it. Ask about parachute jump activity near your route, special use airspace status, military training routes, or anything you’re uncertain about. That’s exactly what Flight Service is there for.
Why Documentation Matters More Than You Think
Write down your briefing. Not a mental note - actually write it down. Include departure and destination airports, current conditions, forecast conditions, winds at your planned altitude, adverse conditions, route synopsis, alternates and their forecasts, and any NOTAMs affecting your flight.
Writing it forces you to process each element rather than let it wash past you while you’re already thinking about startup checklists. It gives you a reference if conditions change enroute and you need to make a fast decision. And if something goes wrong and there’s an investigation, your briefing notes demonstrate you conducted a proper pre-flight weather assessment.
What Will the Examiner Actually Ask?
The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for the private pilot practical test treat weather as a core area. The examiner won’t simply ask whether you got a briefing - they’ll ask you to walk through your weather decision.
Expect questions like: Why did you decide conditions were acceptable? What hazards did you identify? What are your personal minimums for a no-go? What alternates did you identify if conditions changed enroute? These are the questions any thoughtful pilot in command should be asking themselves before every cross-country flight.
What Are Personal Minimums and Why Do They Matter?
The regulations set the floor. 1,000-and-3 is the shorthand for day VFR in controlled airspace - a 1,000-foot ceiling and 3 miles visibility. But the regulations are a legal floor, not a training standard.
As a student pilot, your personal minimums should be significantly higher. An 800-foot ceiling and 3 miles visibility may be legal, but it’s not a suitable training environment. Work with your instructor to establish yours, and understand clearly that the regulation is the minimum - not the target.
When Should You Get Your Briefing?
Get your briefing close to departure. Standard practice is a full briefing within one hour of planned departure, with a check of current METARs and TAFs right before engine start. A briefing from four or six hours earlier may bear no resemblance to actual conditions.
