A complete weather briefing follows a deliberate order - adverse conditions first, then synopsis, current conditions, forecasts, winds aloft, and NOTAMs - so the most dangerous information reaches your eyes before anything else. The goal isn’t to check a box; it’s to build one honest mental picture of the weather and then ask whether your entire mission, out and back, actually closes. If the trend is against you at either end of the trip, you already have your answer: no-go.

To make this concrete, we’ll build a briefing for a simple Saturday cross-country: a 110-nautical-mile trip from your home field to grab a hundred-dollar hamburger, departing around 10:00 a.m. local and home before dark. A simple day feels like it doesn’t need a real briefing - which is exactly why simple days bite pilots. Every flight gets a briefing.

You want a source that gives you a legally recognized, logged briefing. That means an official source, not a random weather app.

The two main options are the Aviation Weather Center, run by the National Weather Service at aviationweather.gov, or an approved vendor like ForeFlight or Leidos Flight Service at 1-800-WX-BRIEF (1800wxbrief.com).

The source matters because a random app might give you good data, but it won’t guarantee you saw everything, and it won’t create a record that you looked. Both of those protections matter.

What Order Should a Weather Briefing Follow?

The FAA and Flight Service organize a standard briefing in a specific sequence, and you should steal that order for your self-briefs:

  1. Adverse conditions
  2. VFR-not-recommended statement (if it applies)
  3. Synopsis
  4. Current conditions (METARs)
  5. En route forecast
  6. Destination forecast (TAF)
  7. Winds aloft
  8. NOTAMs (Notices to Air Missions)
  9. TFRs (Temporary Flight Restrictions)

Adverse conditions lead for a reason: the FAA wants the thing most likely to hurt you to hit your eyes first. If there’s an AIRMET for mountain obscuration along your route, it won’t be buried under the winds aloft. When you self-brief, look for the bad news first, on purpose, before you fall in love with the flight.

How Do I Read the Synopsis and METARs?

Start with the synopsis - the big picture and the “why” behind the weather. Say it reads: a cold front draped across your route, moving east at 15 knots, with a surface low to the northwest. That one sentence tells you where the lift is, where the clouds and precipitation will be, and which way it’s all marching. The front is the main character today.

Now the current conditions, your METARs. Your departure field reads: wind 240 at 8 knots, visibility 10 miles, few clouds at 3,500 feet, temperature 19°C, dew point 11°C, altimeter 30.11. That’s a beautiful VFR morning - wide temperature/dew point spread, so no fog worry at the departure end.

But you’re not staying home. Pull the METAR for a field about two-thirds along your route: wind 180 at 14, gusting 22, visibility 6 miles in light rain and mist, broken at 1,600 feet, overcast at 4,000 feet, temperature 15°C, dew point 14°C.

Stop at that spread. Fifteen and fourteen - one degree. The sky is right on the edge of forming cloud and fog. With rain falling into the air and a one-degree spread, that 1,600-foot broken layer isn’t going to climb as the day warms; it may well come down. That’s the detail that separates a pilot who reads weather from one who just collects it.

How Do I Use a TAF for My Arrival Time?

The METAR is now; the TAF is later. A checkride examiner is looking for exactly this: not just that you can read a Terminal Aerodrome Forecast, but that you can find the part that matters for your arrival time and connect it to a decision.

Your destination TAF shows a base period of wind 190 at 12, visibility better than 6 miles, broken at 2,500 feet. Fine so far. But there’s a TEMPO group calling for visibility 2 miles in moderate rain and a ceiling broken at 800 feet, expected between 1600 and 2000 Zulu.

Eight hundred feet and two miles is below basic VFR at an airport without special help - a world away from the ten-mile morning you left. And that TEMPO window straddles your planned return. You’d be at lunch watching the ceiling fall right into your departure window for the trip home.

Here’s what catches people: TEMPO doesn’t mean “maybe.” It means the forecaster expects those conditions to occur in temporary bursts, lasting less than half the period. Expect it, plan around it, and don’t be the pilot who says “well, it was only temporary” on the accident report.

What Can Winds Aloft Tell Me Beyond Fuel Planning?

Forecast winds and temperatures aloft are the tool nobody loves but everybody should read. Say the forecast is 230 at 15 knots at 3,000 feet and 250 at 28 knots at 6,000 feet.

Practically, that’s a headwind on part of your route - it eats fuel and stretches your time, so redo your time en route with the wind, not the no-wind number you daydreamed with.

The subtler clue is direction. Veering winds - turning clockwise as you climb, from 230 at the surface toward 250 higher up - often go with warm air moving in and improving or stable conditions. Backing winds, turning counterclockwise with height, often hint at cold air and deteriorating weather. You don’t need to be a meteorologist; just notice which way the winds turn with altitude. It’s a free clue.

What Are the Three Types of AIRMET?

An AIRMET (Airman’s Meteorological Information) forecasts weather that’s hazardous but below the severe threshold. Know the three flavors cold:

  • AIRMET Sierra - IFR conditions and mountain obscuration
  • AIRMET Tango - turbulence, strong surface winds, and low-level wind shear
  • AIRMET Zulu - icing and freezing levels

On today’s front, expect an AIRMET Sierra along the frontal band - Sierra flags ceilings below 1,000 feet and/or visibility below 3 miles over an area. And it sits right on top of the stretch where you already saw the one-degree spread and the falling ceiling.

Now three independent pieces of the briefing - the synopsis, the METAR, and the AIRMET - all tell the same story. When independent sources agree, the picture is real. That’s the moment you trust it.

Why Should I Never Skip NOTAMs and TFRs?

NOTAMs are where you learn the destination runway is closed for painting, the one instrument approach is out of service, or there’s a tower crane you never knew about. On a perfect VFR day, a NOTAM can still be the thing that ruins your afternoon. Read them all, even in that awful abbreviated shorthand.

Then check TFRs - temporary flight restrictions - especially near stadiums, VIP movements, and firefighting areas, which can appear with very little notice.

How Do I Make the Go/No-Go Decision?

Lay it all on the table:

  • Departure: gorgeous, VFR.
  • En route: a front with a falling ceiling, rain and mist, a one-degree spread, and an AIRMET Sierra for IFR conditions.
  • Destination: VFR now, but a TEMPO for 800 and 2 right across your return window.

You’re a VFR pilot here. The question isn’t “can I probably sneak it?” It’s “what has to be true for this to be a good flight, and is it true?” - straight out of the aeronautical decision making the Airman Certification Standards want you demonstrating.

The morning out might be flyable to a point, but you’d be flying toward deteriorating conditions, into an AIRMET Sierra, with a ceiling the numbers say is coming down. That’s flying into a shrinking box. And even if you get there, your way home is forecast to go below VFR while you eat lunch. The round trip does not close. One end is forecast to trap you.

That’s a no-go. Not because any single number is catastrophic this minute, but because the trend is against you at both ends and three independent sources agree. The professional choice - go tomorrow, or go somewhere with the wind at your back and clear air ahead - isn’t the timid one. It’s the smart one. And making that call from your kitchen table, coffee still warm, is a hundred times easier than making it at 2,000 feet with the ceiling squeezing you onto rising terrain.

One more habit: after you self-brief online, if anything looks marginal, call Flight Service at 1-800-WX-BRIEF, give a briefer your route and time, and ask the simple question - “what am I missing?” A thirty-second conversation has turned around more than one flight. There’s no shame in a second set of eyes.
