1. Adverse conditions

The very first thing you receive is the stuff that can hurt you: thunderstorms, icing, low ceilings, mountain obscuration, a closed runway at your destination - anything significant enough that it might make you change or cancel your plan.

The system puts this first for one reason: so you can make a go or no-go decision before you’ve invested twenty minutes into a briefing and gotten attached to the idea of flying. It’s the off-ramp, right at the top.

Build this discipline: when you hear adverse conditions, actually listen for the word no. Give yourself permission in the first thirty seconds to say a line of storms is enough and you’re not going today. The pilots who get into trouble are often the ones who heard the adverse conditions, filed them away, and kept planning anyway. On your checkride, the examiner wants to hear you weigh adverse conditions honestly - not wave them off.

If you’re planning to fly under visual flight rules and the weather along your route is at or below VFR minimums - or trending that way - the briefer will say the words “VFR flight not recommended.”

This is not a prohibition. The briefer isn’t grounding you. It’s a serious, deliberate flag: a trained weather specialist looked at your route, altitude, and timing and concluded they would not do this VFR. 4. Current conditions

Now it gets specific and local. This is the METAR data - the actual surface observations at your departure, along your route, and at your destination as they exist right now: ceilings, visibility, wind, temperature, dewpoint, and altimeter.

Pay close attention to the temperature and dewpoint spread. When those two numbers get within a few degrees of each other, moisture is on the table - fog and low ceilings. If temperature and dewpoint are sitting right on top of each other at your destination for a late-afternoon arrival, the sky is telling you something before it happens.

5. En route forecast

Current conditions told you what is happening. The en route forecast tells you what will be happening along your route while you’re actually out there flying it. It walks down your route of flight, in the order you’ll fly it, describing expected conditions for the time you’ll be there.

This is where the flight actually lives. You depart in decent weather, but two hours down the road that front has moved and you’re arriving into something different than what you saw on the ramp. The en route forecast is where you catch that.

6. Destination forecast

This is the TAF for where you’re going, valid for your estimated time of arrival plus a cushion on either side. Build this habit: do not brief your arrival time - brief a window around it.

Why? You might be late. You might hit an unexpected headwind or stop for fuel. If the weather is beautiful at your planned arrival but goes down hard forty-five minutes later, and you show up forty-five minutes late, you’ve just flown into the bad part of the forecast. Brief the window, not the moment.

7. Winds and temperatures aloft

Now you get the winds at your cruising altitudes. This is your groundspeed, your fuel burn, and whether you should climb to 9,000 feet for a tailwind or stay lower to escape a headwind. It also gives you the temperature aloft, which matters enormously when there’s visible moisture and you’re near freezing - that combination is how you pick up ice.

8. NOTAMs

Notices to Air Missions. The closed runway, the taxiway construction, the changed tower frequency, the GPS outage in the area, the temporary flight restriction sitting right on top of the airport you planned for a fuel stop.

Here’s the trap: NOTAMs come last, and by the time you reach them you’re tired and it’s tempting to let your eyes glaze over. Don’t. Current conditions show your departure airport wide open: clear skies, ten miles visibility, light wind. Your destination is fine right now too. This is where a less careful pilot relaxes.

But the en route forecast shows the back half of the route dropping to marginal VFR by early afternoon as the front lifts through. The destination forecast, briefed for a window around your arrival, shows ceilings dropping to 1,000 feet and visibility down to 3 miles right about the time you’d show up - maybe worse if you’re running late.

The winds aloft reveal a headwind that will make you slower than planned, meaning you’ll arrive later, meaning you’ll arrive deeper into the bad part of the forecast.

See how the story built? No single piece screamed at you. The departure was gorgeous. But adverse conditions flagged the front, the synopsis explained it, the en route forecast showed it moving into your path, the destination forecast put it at your arrival, and the winds aloft told you you’d get there late - right when it’s worst.
