Everything else slides: the far end creeps toward you, the threshold sinks and rushes under the nose, but that one point sits still and grows larger as you close in. Learning to find it lets you read your approach in real time and correct problems long before they become emergencies.

What Is the Aiming Point on Final Approach?

When you fly a stabilized approach, there is exactly one spot on the runway that does not move in your windscreen. It doesn’t rise, it doesn’t fall - it stays pinned in the same place on your glareshield, growing larger as you descend toward it.

That still spot is your flight path. It is where the airplane is going. Your eyes are looking at your own future, painted right there on the pavement.

This is why so many students struggle early on: they stare at the wrong thing. For the first dozen or so landings, it’s common to fixate on the far end of the runway, or worse, right over the nose at the threshold coming at you. When you look at the wrong spot, every correction comes late. You end up chasing the airplane instead of flying it. The fix isn’t stronger hands - it’s where you point your eyes.

How Do I Tell If I’m High or Low on Approach?

The aiming point tells you instantly, and it never lies. Roll out on final with flaps set, airspeed nailed, and trimmed. Before you think about the flare, find the spot that isn’t moving. Let your eyes settle and it will pop out at you.

If you’re too high: The aiming point slides down toward the threshold, toward you. The runway seems to flatten and stretch, and you’ll see more and more pavement below your intended touchdown point. That means you’re landing long. Reduce power, lower the nose slightly to hold airspeed, and watch the spot walk back to where you want it.

If you’re too low: The aiming point slides up and away toward the far end. The runway seems to stand up, and the near threshold rises in front of you like a wall. Your actual flight path is now landing short - in the approach lights, on the fence, before the pavement. When you’re low, the answer is power, not pitch.

The still spot is truth. It shows you where you’re going and doesn’t care how badly you want to make the runway.

What’s the Difference Between the Aiming Point and the Touchdown Point?

These are two different points, and confusing them trips up almost every student.

Your aiming point is where the airplane is pointed - that still spot on the pavement, the place you’d hit if you flew straight into the ground without flaring.

Your touchdown point is where the wheels actually kiss the runway, a bit farther down, because you flare. You round out, hold it off, float a little, and settle past the aiming point.

So a smart pilot aims a little short of where they actually want to touch down. If you want the wheels on the thousand-foot markers, you might aim for the numbers and let the flare carry you those last few hundred feet. The exact distance depends on your airplane and approach speed - you’ll learn yours with practice - but the concept holds in a Cessna 172, a Piper Cherokee, a Cub, or a King Air. Aim short, flare, touch down on target.

What Does the ACS Require for Landings?

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) task for a normal approach and landing requires maintaining a stabilized approach and a specified airspeed, then touching down at a proper pitch attitude within a specified distance beyond a defined point. On the private pilot standard, that’s within 400 feet beyond your specified touchdown point.

Four hundred feet sounds generous - until you’re floating.

The examiner wants a pilot who picks a spot and puts the airplane there, not somewhere in the neighborhood. The only way to hit a spot consistently is to see, in real time, whether your current flight path will make it. That’s exactly what the aiming point gives you.

How Do I Fly a Stabilized Approach Using the Aiming Point?

Picture a calm evening, turning final for runway 27 on a long strip. Roll out, get your flaps in, settle on your approach speed - call it 65 knots - and trim so the airplane holds that speed on its own. Now your hands are free to think.

Find your spot. Tonight it’s sitting a little short of the numbers, out in the overrun before the pavement starts. The airplane is telling you you’re low. Add a touch of power and watch: the spot walks forward, up onto the numbers where you want it. Ease the power back to hold that new path. Now the spot is parked on the touchdown zone, rock steady.

That is a stabilized approach - not because someone gave you numbers, but because you can see your flight path and manage it.

Keep the spot pinned, airspeed steady, the numbers growing bigger. Then, only in the last little bit - around 15 to 20 feet - shift your gaze to the far end of the runway. Up close, the ground rushes by too fast to judge height, but looking long lets you see the airplane settle so you can time the roundout, hold it off, and let it touch.

Aim at the spot the whole way down. Look long in the flare. That’s the rhythm.

What Are the Most Common Landing Mistakes?

Fixating over the nose at the threshold. Staring at the near edge coming at you causes target fixation. You’ll flare too high because it feels like the ground is right there, and you’ll balloon. Keep your eyes on the aiming point during the approach, then long down the runway in the flare - never right over the nose.

The stretch. You’re low, the spot is sitting short in the weeds, and instead of adding power you pull back on the yoke to make the runway. Do not do this. Pulling back doesn’t extend your glide - it trades away airspeed, raises the nose, and walks you toward a stall, low and slow behind the power curve, where a stall becomes a spin that low is not survivable. When you’re low, the answer is power. The aiming point warns you early, at a mile out, so you fix it with a whisper of throttle instead of yanking over the fence.

Chasing the numbers. Some pilots lock onto a painted number and forget to fly a stable path to it. Pick your spot, but if the approach falls apart and you can’t get that spot pinned and steady, go around. A go-around isn’t a failure - it’s a professional choosing to try again from a position of strength. Examiners love a well-executed go-around because it shows you have standards.

The Real Lesson: The Approach Is the Landing

Most landing struggles aren’t a flare problem - they start earlier. An unstable approach the pilot couldn’t read means arriving at the flare fast, high, low, or drifting, then trying to salvage everything in the last two seconds. You cannot fix in the flare what you broke on final. The flare is just the finish. The aiming point is how you read the approach.

On every approach this week, consciously find the spot. Say it out loud if you have to: Where is the spot that isn’t moving? Is it on my touchdown zone? Walking toward me (getting high)? Walking away up the runway (getting low)? Name it, correct it, watch it settle. Do that ten times and it stops being a checklist item and becomes something you just see.
