The goal is straightforward: get the weight off the wheels as fast as possible, then stay airborne inside ground effect while building speed to a safe climb velocity. That second part is where the technique lives - and where most students lose points.

How Does a Soft-Field Takeoff Work, Step by Step?

The technique begins before you reach the runway. On a soft field, you never stop rolling. Taxi directly onto the runway and begin adding power immediately. The yoke or stick stays full aft throughout the takeoff roll, keeping the nose wheel unloaded so it cannot dig in.

As the airplane accelerates, the nose will naturally want to rise. Manage back pressure to let the airplane fly off when it’s ready - you are not forcing it into the air. In a Cessna 172, normal rotation speed (Vr) is around 55 knots, but on a soft field the airplane will lift off closer to 45 knots or even lower depending on conditions. That early liftoff is not an error. It is the whole point.

Once airborne, do not climb. Establish a level or nearly level pitch attitude, staying inside ground effect - roughly one wingspan above the surface, which in a Cessna 172 is approximately 35 to 40 feet. Trust the ground effect. Watch the airspeed indicator. Climb when the numbers say so - not when it feels right.

Mistake 3: Over-rotating at liftoff. Knowing that back pressure and early liftoff are required, some students apply maximum back pressure aggressively. A calculated ground roll of 800 feet on pavement becomes nearly 1,300 feet with a 60% correction applied. On a short strip, that number changes the entire decision. How Do You Calculate Performance for a Soft-Field Departure?

Consider a planning scenario that makes this concrete. A private grass strip: 3,000 feet of dry, mowed grass, departure density altitude around 2,500 feet, aircraft at roughly 85% of gross weight. Running the numbers from the normal paved runway table gives a calculated ground roll of 900 feet. The runway is sufficient.

But the grass correction hasn’t been applied. Add 20 to 30 percent, and the estimate rises to 1,100 to 1,200 feet. Still workable - but the margin has narrowed. Factor in a slight upslope on the departure end and an unknown surface condition (no AWOS, no weather station, no one to call), and the decision calculus has shifted meaningfully. That is when you either make a different decision or, at minimum, contact the strip owner about current surface conditions before committing to the trip.

On a real soft surface, that is the moment the wheel digs in, the airplane pitches forward, and the prop or firewall pays the price. Hold back pressure through touchdown and into the rollout. Let the nose wheel come down on your terms, not the runway’s.

How Should You Prepare for the Soft-Field Checkride Maneuver?

Brief the maneuver before you get in the airplane. Walk through the sequence out loud during preflight: yoke back, power in, don’t stop rolling, let it fly off early, hold ground effect attitude, watch airspeed, climb at Vy. Verbalizing the steps builds the muscle memory before you need it.

Know your numbers without looking. Vx, Vy, soft-field liftoff speed range, approach and landing speeds - these should not require a placard scan while three feet off the ground in ground effect. The examiner is watching your eyes. If they are hunting for a placard, you have already communicated something.

Brief a go-around before every takeoff, especially here. From a failed soft-field departure, you are already at low altitude and low airspeed. The decision to abandon the takeoff has to happen early and cleanly. It is far easier if you have already thought through what it looks like before you started rolling.
