On saturated or soft ground, rolling resistance becomes a serious threat. Every foot of ground roll costs energy, and the nosewheel on a tricycle-gear airplane is the most vulnerable point. Push a nosewheel into soft ground at speed and you risk it digging in - leading to a nose-over or a prop strike.
The soft field technique exists to solve this problem by moving weight off the nosewheel as early as possible, getting the wheels off the ground before the surface can do damage, and then using the aerodynamic cushion near the ground - ground effect - to accelerate safely without climbing prematurely.

When Does the Airplane Lift Off, and What Do You Do Next?
With full back pressure and full power, the airplane will lift off earlier than you’re used to - at an airspeed that would be too low to sustain a climb in free air. That’s intentional. You want it to lift off as soon as it will.
The moment it does, the instinct is to pull back and climb. This is the mistake. Pulling back causes the airplane to rise out of ground effect. At the low airspeed you just lifted off at, there’s not enough energy to sustain the climb. The airplane slows, stalls the climb, and settles back toward the surface.
The correct response when the airplane lifts off is to level off. Hold altitude. Use whatever pitch input it takes to stay five to ten feet above the runway - just inside ground effect. Let airspeed build. Watch the indicator. Only when you reach your target climb speed do you establish a climb attitude and depart.
Should You Target Vy or Vx Before Climbing?

Short field takeoff: Hold brakes, run up to full power, release, accelerate to rotation speed, rotate, and immediately establish a steep climb at Vx to clear the obstacle using minimum runway. You hold the airplane on the ground until the right speed, then climb aggressively.
Soft field takeoff: No brakes held, no waiting for a specific rotation speed. You let the airplane fly as soon as it will, level off, and stay near the surface while airspeed builds.
Applying short field technique on a soft surface means rolling longer while the nosewheel fights resistance the entire time - and potentially never reaching rotation speed because the ground keeps stealing energy. Runup complete before reaching the runway. Area clear. Radio call made if uncontrolled. Rolling turn onto the runway - continuous motion. Align with centerline during the turn. Full power as soon as aligned. Back pressure already applied.
Feel the airplane accelerate. Feel it want to fly. Don’t fight it - let it lift off. Then, instead of pulling back more, ease off slightly and level off. Five feet, ten feet above the surface. Airspeed building. Approaching Vy. There it is. Pitch for the climb. Clean, positive, under control.
