The FAA’s AirVenture arrival funnels you from an initial fix at Ripon, up the railroad tracks to Fisk, where a controller in a lawn chair directs you by radio while you answer only by rocking your wings, all while holding half a mile in trail at 90 knots and 1,800 feet MSL. Plan that arrival backward before you launch, carry fuel to an alternate, and the busiest airspace on the planet becomes the best flying you’ll do all year.

Why is the Oshkosh arrival the real flight?

Most cross-country planning focuses on the fun part: the route, the checkpoints, the wind correction, the fuel burn. The arrival gets treated like it will just happen.

At a quiet field on a Tuesday afternoon, it will. But into the busiest airport in the world during show week, the arrival is the flight. Everything before it is just getting to the starting line.

The FAA publishes a special document every year purely for getting into Oshkosh during the show - the NOTAM. This year it runs about 32 pages for one arrival. That page count alone tells you how seriously to take it.

Read the NOTAM days ahead, then read it again. Print the parts you’ll actually use so they sit on your kneeboard - not buried in an app you’re fumbling for at 130 knots. You never open it for the first time in the cockpit, and never the night before.

When you rock your wings, you’re acknowledging: that’s me, I hear you, I understand. You don’t answer on the radio. You wave the airplane. Then they assign your runway and your turn. That’s the entire conversation - they talk, you rock, you comply.

Think about what that means for your planning. You’ll fly into the busiest airspace on the planet mostly by not talking. So before you leave home, you need to fly precise headings and airspeeds with your eyes outside the airplane. The airplane must be trimmed and stable at 90 knots and 1,800 feet without conscious effort, because all your attention goes to spotting traffic and catching the controller’s signal.

What is the half-mile-in-trail spacing at Oshkosh?

The FAA’s whole system at Oshkosh is built on one number: half a mile in trail. They want half a mile between airplanes - that’s the spacing that lets them land airplanes on the same runway, sometimes on different colored dots on the same runway at the same time.

This is where the real airmanship lives.

Say you reach Ripon and it’s a conga line - airplanes stacked as far as you can see. The NOTAM has an answer: a holding pattern over Green Lake nearby, where you fly left turns and wait your turn.

And here’s the discipline piece. If the traffic is overwhelming, the weather is going down, or you’re task-saturated and you’ve lost the picture, you leave. Break off, fly away from the arrival, go to your alternate, and come back when your head is right. There is no prize for forcing it.

How much fuel should you carry into Oshkosh?

  2. Back up to Fisk. Are you ready to fly by light-gun signal and wing rock, with no talking?
  3. Back up to the railroad. Can you hold 90 knots and 1,800 feet, hands off, eyes outside?
  4. Back up to Ripon. What’s your hold plan over Green Lake if it’s packed?
  5. Back up to fuel. Do you have the gas to make turning around a non-event?

Answer those before you launch, and the last fifty miles stop being the scary part.
