Who Designed the P-47 and Why Was It So Big?

A propeller that big demanded tall landing gear to keep the blade tips off the ground. But long gear was too wide to fit the wings, where the guns and ammunition had to go. Kartveli’s solution was telescoping landing gear that extended roughly nine inches longer when lowered and retracted shorter when stowed.

What Was It Like to Fly the Thunderbolt?

Early pilots weren’t impressed. They wanted sleek, light-handling fighters like the Mustang, not a fully loaded brute weighing seven to eight tons - heavier than any single-seat piston fighter before it. A running joke held that if diving away from an enemy didn’t work, you could always unstrap and run around the roomy cockpit for cover.

That cockpit genuinely was spacious. Pilots described it as sitting in an armchair in your living room. Starting the Double Wasp brought a deep, rolling radial rumble rather than the scream of an inline engine, and the huge propeller produced strong torque that demanded firm rudder on takeoff.

The airplane came into its own at high altitude. Up in the thin, cold air where lesser fighters struggled, the turbocharger kept the engine pulling hard - exactly as Kartveli intended.

What Made the P-47 So Effective in Combat?

Three qualities defined the Thunderbolt in a fight.

The dive. The heavy, clean airframe let the Jug dive faster than its opponents could follow. German fighters could out-turn and out-climb it down low, but once a Thunderbolt pilot pushed the nose over, nothing could stay with him. Republic test pilots probed the edges of compressibility - control problems near the speed of sound - so combat pilots wouldn’t have to discover them alone.

The firepower. The eight .50-caliber Browning machine guns, four in each wing, threw out a devastating wall of lead. Pilots didn’t need to be marksmen - they needed to point the airplane at fighters, locomotives, trucks, or troops.

The toughness. This is what pilots remembered most. The air-cooled radial had no vulnerable radiator or coolant lines. A liquid-cooled engine could be crippled by a single bullet to the cooling system, but the Double Wasp brought pilots home on 14 cylinders instead of 18, with cowlings shot away and cylinders blown clean off.

The Bob Johnson Story: Why Pilots Trusted the Jug

Early in the war, pilot Robert “Bob” Johnson was ambushed over France by a Focke-Wulf that emptied its cannon and machine guns into his Thunderbolt at point-blank range. The German pilot reportedly pulled alongside to look, unable to understand why the American was still airborne.

Johnson flew home with an oil-covered, shot-up windscreen he could barely see through, carrying - by some accounts - more than 20 cannon strikes and over 100 bullet holes. He landed the wrecked airplane, and it had done the one job that mattered: it kept him alive. Bob Johnson went on to become one of the top American aces in Europe, flying the Jug the entire way.

From Bomber Escort to Ground-Attack Hammer

The Thunderbolt was designed as a high-altitude bomber escort, and it performed that role - but early versions lacked the range to fly all the way to Berlin and back. The longer-legged P-51 Mustang eventually took over deep escort duty.

Rather than being retired, the Jug was turned loose on the ground. Fitted with bombs and rockets, it became a fearsome fighter-bomber. By war’s end, the P-47 had flown on nearly every front. It served in Europe and the Pacific, where its range and toughness suited long over-water missions, and it flew with the British, the Free French, the Soviets, and the Brazilians - who took their Thunderbolts to Italy.

Republic and its partners built more than 15,000 Thunderbolts, more than any other American fighter in the war. The men who once mocked its size came to say something different: that the airplane had brought them home.

How Many P-47s Still Fly Today?

Of the more than 15,000 built, only a small handful remain airworthy today - few enough to count on your fingers and toes. Warbird crews and major flying museums keep them going, but the aircraft are complex, expensive, and thirsty, with the turbocharger system alone remaining a maintenance challenge some 80 years later.

When one fires up and taxis out at an airshow, big and barrel-chested and rumbling, crowds fall quiet - because the Thunderbolt represents the machine that carried a generation of young men into combat and brought so many of them back.
