Who Designed the P-47 Thunderbolt?

Alexander Kartveli was the engineer behind the Thunderbolt. Born in 1896 in Tbilisi, Georgia - the country, not the state - Kartveli studied aeronautics in Paris before emigrating to the United States in the 1920s. He joined Seversky Aircraft Company on Long Island, New York, which later became Republic Aviation. Kartveli stayed through the transition and did his most significant work there.

His design philosophy was direct: build around the most powerful engine available and engineer everything else to support it. By 1940, that engine was the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp - an 18-cylinder, air-cooled radial producing over 2,000 horsepower in combat ratings.

Why Was the P-47’s Fuselage So Large?

Running a 2,000-horsepower engine at altitude requires forcing compressed air into the intake - thin air at 30,000 feet doesn’t carry enough oxygen on its own. The solution was a turbo-supercharger, and it was a substantial piece of equipment. Kartveli mounted it in the rear fuselage, connected to the engine by a long duct running beneath the cockpit.

The result was that distinctive ballooning fuselage shape aft of the cockpit. Pilots compared it to a milk bottle. Others called it a jug. The nickname was in wide use before the airplane ever flew, and it never went away.

When Did the P-47 First Fly?

The prototype - designated the XP-47B - made its first flight on May 6, 1942. The test pilot’s immediate assessment: heavy, sluggish in roll. The Army Air Forces had genuine reservations about fielding the largest, heaviest single-engine fighter in their inventory.

Those reservations began dissolving above 20,000 feet. Where the Spitfire and Hurricane struggled at altitude, the Thunderbolt came alive. Colonel Hubert Zemke, commanding the 56th Fighter Group - known as Zemke’s Wolfpack - approached the problem as a tactician. He built doctrine around what the airplane could do rather than what it couldn’t. The approach became known as boom and zoom: climb to altitude, get above the enemy, execute a high-speed diving pass, extend away, and use the Thunderbolt’s heavy airframe and long wings to pull out of the dive and climb back to altitude. In a dive, the P-47 accelerated past the structural limits of most German fighters that tried to follow.

The 56th Fighter Group flew P-47s for the entire war, never transitioning to Mustangs as many other groups did. They finished as the top-scoring group in the Eighth Air Force by aerial victories, with over a thousand confirmed kills.

One of Zemke’s pilots, Francis Stanley “Gabby” Gabreski of Bridgeport, Connecticut, accumulated 28 aerial victories by the summer of 1944 - making him the leading American ace in the European theater at that point in the war.

On June 26, 1943, a 22-year-old pilot from Lawton, Oklahoma named Robert Johnson was escorting Eighth Air Force bombers back from a target deep in Germany when a skilled Focke-Wulf 190 pilot got onto his tail. Cannon rounds punched through the cockpit. The windscreen shattered. Hydraulic fluid sprayed in and began burning. Elevator controls barely responded.

The German pilot pulled alongside the shattered Thunderbolt, assessed the damage, waggled his wings, and turned for home. Johnson kept flying.

He crossed the English Channel without working hydraulics, landed at Manston airfield on the Kent coast - an emergency strip built for exactly these situations - and walked away. Ground crews counted more than 200 separate penetrations in the airframe. The armor plate behind the seat had stopped cannon rounds. The firewall held despite a torn cowling. The R-2800 kept running through conditions that would have seized a liquid-cooled engine.

That durability was the Thunderbolt’s other tactical advantage - the one that doesn’t appear on performance charts. Pilots who flew both the P-47 and the P-51 Mustang generally considered the Mustang the better all-around fighter: better range, better sustained climb, better in a turning fight. But when asked which airplane they’d want to be in when everything had gone wrong, many answered differently than the history books might suggest.

The P-47 as a Ground Attack Aircraft

As Allied air superiority solidified over Europe, P-47 groups shifted increasingly to ground attack. Eight .50-caliber guns were lethal against anything moving on a road. Fitted with bombs and rockets on underwing pylons, the Thunderbolt became one of the war’s most effective fighter-bombers.

By the Normandy campaign in summer 1944, P-47 groups were striking German armor, supply convoys, rail yards, and bridges at low level. German troops in armored columns came to dread the sound of that big Double Wasp coming in low. They called the aircraft Jabos - short for Jagdbomber, fighter-bomber.

The P-47 also served in the Pacific with groups operating in New Guinea and across the island chains. The range limitations that complicated early escort missions over Europe were more manageable as forward island bases could be positioned closer to targets.

P-47 Production Numbers and Surviving Aircraft

The 15,686 airframes produced at Republic Aviation’s plant in Farmingdale, New York represent the largest production run of any American fighter aircraft in history - surpassing the P-51 Mustang, the F4U Corsair, and the P-38 Lightning.

The postwar years stripped most of that fleet. Thousands of airframes were reduced to aluminum ingots when jet aircraft made piston fighters obsolete almost overnight. Some went to allied air forces and continued flying for years - the Brazilian Air Force operated P-47s well into the 1950s, and some of those airframes survive today.

Approximately 100 P-47s are thought to exist worldwide in various states of preservation. Airworthy examples number in the low dozens.
