Robert “Bob” Johnson was a young Thunderbolt pilot with the 56th Fighter Group over Europe in 1943. Bounced and separated from his flight, he took cannon and machine-gun fire that shattered his canopy, blew apart his instrument panel, and sent hydraulic fluid and oil into his eyes. He was hit, bleeding, half-blind, and briefly on fire. His jammed canopy trapped him inside, so he pointed the airplane toward England and rode it.

Then a Focke-Wulf - one of Germany’s best fighters - pulled in behind him and opened fire from close range, again and again. Johnson could only hunch down behind that big radial engine and take it. The German shot until he ran completely out of ammunition, then pulled alongside, shook his head, gave a small wave, and turned for home.
