Why Was the P-47 So Big?

He didn’t start with the wing or the guns or the cockpit. He started with the engine - the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp, eighteen cylinders in two rows producing 2,000 horsepower - and then built the entire airplane around a turbocharger.

A turbocharger was the key to owning the sky. An ordinary engine loses power as it climbs because the air thins out, but a turbocharger feeds the engine sea-level air even at 20,000 to 25,000 feet, so it keeps making power up where the bombers fly. In 1943, whoever controlled high altitude controlled the fight.

The catch: that turbocharger was the size of a trash can. It lived in the belly of the fuselage behind the pilot, which meant yards of ducting snaking forward and back to carry exhaust and pressurized air. That plumbing - not styling - is the reason the Jug has its deep, pot-bellied fuselage.

How One Big Part Led to Another

The Thunderbolt grew the way a snowball grows rolling downhill. Two thousand horsepower is useless without a propeller big enough to turn it into thrust, so Kartveli fitted a twelve-foot, paddle-bladed prop. A prop that large needs tall landing gear to keep the blade tips off the runway. Tall gear folding into the wing pushed the guns outboard, which left room for eight .50-caliber machine guns - four in each wing.

Everything on the airplane was big because the part next to it was big. By the time the prototype was finished, it weighed nearly twice what the little fighters weighed. Pilots who first saw a seven-ton fighter thought Republic had lost its mind.

Then they flew it.

What Made the Thunderbolt Effective in Combat

At high altitude, where the turbocharger came alive, the Jug was a monster - fast, and in a dive, uncatchable. All that Republic iron would come down out of the sun faster than any enemy could follow, hammer the target with those eight guns, and use the built-up speed to zoom right back to altitude.

That tactic had a name: “dive and zoom.” You did not try to turn with the lighter fighters. You used your weight as a weapon.

But raw performance is not why pilots came to love the airplane.

Why Did P-47 Pilots Trust the “Jug” So Much?

They loved it because it brought them home. The heavy airframe Kartveli built to carry all that plumbing turned out to be the toughest fighter of the war.

Thunderbolts flew home with cylinders shot clean off the engine, with two or three feet of wing missing, and riddled with holes. The secret was the air-cooled radial engine: it had no vulnerable radiator and no coolant lines. A liquid-cooled engine can seize within minutes from a single rifle-caliber hole in the wrong tube. The Double Wasp could lose an entire cylinder and keep rumbling.

The most famous example is ace Robert Johnson, one of the top American pilots in Europe. Early in the war he was badly bounced - his airplane torn apart by cannon and machine-gun fire, canopy shattered, hydraulics gone. A German pilot, out of ammunition, pulled alongside, emptied his guns into Johnson’s Thunderbolt, then shook his head and peeled away. Johnson flew the wreck back across the English Channel and landed it.

The P-47 as a Ground-Attack Aircraft

When the war moved into ground attack in its final year - Thunderbolts coming down low to hunt trains, trucks, and tanks - the airplane’s toughness mattered even more. Low altitude is where the ground fire is thickest, and where airplanes die. The Jug soaked it up and kept flying.

The P-47 ceded much of the high-altitude escort glory to the P-51 Mustang and its longer range. But down in the mud, hauling bombs and rockets and shrugging off flak, the Thunderbolt was the airplane ground troops prayed to hear coming.

Republic built more than 15,000 Thunderbolts - more than any other American fighter. When the war ended and the jet age arrived, thousands were cut up and melted down almost overnight.

Why Is the P-47 So Rare Today?

Because so many were scrapped, the Thunderbolt is now rarer than the Mustang and rarer than the Corsair, with only a small handful still flying anywhere in the world. Keeping one airworthy takes a museum or a foundation with deep pockets and stubbornly patient people.
