In the late 1930s, the Army Air Corps wanted a fighter that could operate at 25,000 to 30,000 feet, where the bombers - and the fighting - would be.

To make an engine breathe in that thin air, you need a large turbocharger. The story goes that Kartveli started his design not with the wings or cockpit, but with the ductwork - the turbocharger plumbing itself. Exhaust gases ran all the way back behind the pilot to a turbo mounted in the belly, then compressed air fed all the way forward again to the engine.

What Engine Did the P-47 Have?

The Thunderbolt was built around the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp, an 18-cylinder, two-row radial producing right around 2,000 horsepower. Turning all that power into thrust required a paddle-bladed propeller more than 12 feet across.

A propeller that large demanded long landing gear to keep the blades off the runway, which in turn forced the wings to sit high enough to fold the gear away. The result was a fighter that, fully loaded, tipped the scales at about eight tons.

What Was It Like to Fly the Jug?

Pilots sat high, perched over a huge round nose that blocked the view straight ahead on the ground. Taxiing meant S-turning down the taxiway just to see what was in front of you. Early models had a framed “birdcage” canopy.

The takeoff roll was long - the Jug didn’t leap off the ground so much as gather itself and go. But once it climbed into the thin air where other engines choked, the turbocharger kept stuffing sea-level pressure into the Double Wasp, and the aircraft came alive. Was the P-47 a Good Fighter?

Early on, the Thunderbolt struggled. It couldn’t turn tight with the nimble German fighters at low altitude, and it climbed slowly. The first missions over Europe in 1943 were rough, and it initially lacked the range to escort bombers deep into Germany. Enemy pilots learned they could sometimes dive away and out-turn a Jug near the ground.

But pilots discovered what the airplane was genuinely good at: two things nobody could match.

The toughness. Its air-cooled radial engine had no radiator and no coolant lines full of glycol running through the airframe. A single bullet through a liquid-cooled Merlin’s cooling system could seize the engine before a pilot got home. But you could shoot cylinders clean off a Double Wasp and it would keep running on the ones left - long enough to carry a pilot back across the Channel.

The Robert Johnson Story

One of the most famous accounts of the Jug’s durability belongs to Robert Johnson, one of the top American aces in Europe. Early in his tour, he was bounced and caught by a German fighter that raked his Thunderbolt with cannon and machine-gun fire. His engine was hit, his canopy shattered, his controls half shot away, and oil and hydraulic fluid covered the windscreen. He was bleeding from shrapnel in his face and hands.

A German pilot then pulled alongside, looked him over, dropped back in behind, and emptied his guns into Johnson’s airplane. Johnson later said he could hear the rounds drumming into the armor behind his seat. The German fired until he was out of ammunition - then pulled alongside again, shook his head, waved, and flew home, because he simply could not shoot the Thunderbolt down.

Johnson brought that aircraft back to England. Crews counted the holes: more than a hundred, some say considerably more, from both cannon and machine guns. And it had flown him home.

What Was the P-47’s Most Important Role?

Once the Mustang arrived with the range to escort bombers all the way to Berlin and back, the Thunderbolt was handed a different job - and it turned out to be the one it was born for: ground attack.

Crews hung bombs and rockets under its big wings, and it already carried eight .50-caliber machine guns, four in each wing - a wall of lead. Sent down low, the Jugs tore apart everything the enemy tried to move.

After the Normandy invasion, Thunderbolts owned the daylight over France. Locomotives, trucks, tanks, trains, fuel depots, entire German columns - if it moved on a road in occupied Europe in daytime, a Thunderbolt could find and destroy it. German forces learned they could not travel by day.

Ground attack is the most dangerous flying there is: down low, in range of every gun on the ground. Liquid-cooled fighters were terribly vulnerable there - one rifle bullet in the wrong line could end a mission. But the Jug soaked it up, coming home riddled, with pieces missing, when it had no business making it back at all.

Why Is the P-47 Often Forgotten?

More Thunderbolts were built than any other American fighter of the war - more than 15,000 of them. They flew in Europe, the Pacific, and the China-Burma-India theater, doing the dirty, dangerous, unglamorous work everywhere the fighting was.

That may be exactly why it faded from memory. The Mustang got the glory of long escort missions and elegant lines, while the Thunderbolt labored down in the weeds and brought its people home. There is a nobility in that a magazine cover never quite captured.

Today, the contrast is stark on the ramp. A fair number of Mustangs still fly, but airworthy Thunderbolts can very nearly be counted on your fingers - only a handful remain flying in the entire world.
