The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, Hub Zemke's Wolfpack, and the Fighter That Refused to Step Aside for the Mustang
The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt ended WWII as America's most-produced fighter, with the 56th Fighter Group destroying more enemy aircraft than any other group in the Eighth Air Force.
The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the most produced American fighter of World War II, with more than 15,000 built between 1941 and 1945. It was also the most underestimated. When the P-51 Mustang arrived in the European Theater, conventional wisdom declared the Thunderbolt obsolete - but the 56th Fighter Group, the men who knew the airplane best, refused to make the switch. They finished the war with 674 aerial victories, more than any other fighter group in the Eighth Air Force.
The Engineer Who Built It
Alexander Kartveli was born in Tbilisi in 1896, studied engineering in Paris, and fled westward after the Russian Revolution. He arrived in the United States in the 1920s and went to work for Seversky Aircraft, which later reorganized into Republic Aviation.
In the late 1930s, Kartveli began designing what would become the Thunderbolt around a single core decision: the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine was coming, and he intended to build the largest, most powerful single-engine fighter anyone had ever put in the air. Eighteen cylinders in two radial rows, close to 2,000 horsepower at altitude via a turbosupercharger. The airframe would be armored, the cockpit roomy, the wings loaded with eight .50-caliber machine guns.
What emerged was enormous. The Thunderbolt measured over 41 feet long, swung a 13-foot, four-bladed propeller, and loaded out at more than seven tons. The barrel-shaped fuselage earned it an immediate nickname: the Jug.
When Army test pilots saw the prototype in the spring of 1941, one reportedly said that if this thing could fly, he could fly a barn.
It flew.
The 56th Fighter Group and Hub Zemke’s Wolfpack
The first major combat unit to receive the Thunderbolt was the 56th Fighter Group, based at RAF Halesworth in Suffolk and later at Boxted in Essex. Their commander was Colonel Hubert “Hub” Zemke, from Missoula, Montana - a fighter pilot since the late 1930s who had observed RAF operations before Pearl Harbor and returned with a precise understanding of what the air war over Europe would demand.
Zemke flew the hard missions himself, studied enemy tactics, and communicated what he learned directly to his pilots. He had no tolerance for careless flying but considerable patience for pilots who were genuinely learning. His group called themselves the Wolfpack.
The 56th flew their first combat missions in April 1943. The early results were rough - not because the airplane was deficient, but because no one had yet worked out how to use it correctly.
How to Fight a Thunderbolt: Altitude and the Diving Attack
The instinct from earlier aircraft like the P-40 was to turn and dogfight. Against a Focke-Wulf 190 at low altitude, that instinct would get you killed. The P-47 was heavy down low, and lighter German fighters would exploit every pound of that weight in a turning fight.
What Zemke worked out was that the Thunderbolt had to be flown above 20,000 feet. The turbosupercharger - fed by an intake on the engine cowling and ducted nearly the length of the fuselage to the R-2800 - gave the engine performance at altitude that German fighters could not match. In a dive, the Jug was faster than anything the Luftwaffe flew: 450 to 500 miles per hour indicated, with controls that stayed solid past speeds that would have made other fighters unmanageable.
The tactic became doctrine: own the altitude. Use the diving attack. Make the pass, extend on speed, climb back up, repeat. Never let the enemy drag you into the slow turning fight where their advantages showed.
Eight .50-caliber machine guns firing simultaneously produced effects that combat pilots of the era described, without exaggeration, as catastrophic. The Focke-Wulf 190 was a well-built aircraft. The Messerschmitt 109 was a well-built aircraft. Neither was designed to absorb eight guns from directly behind.
Zemke drilled this into the 56th through the summer and fall of 1943. By the end of that year, the group was one of the best-performing fighter units in the Eighth Air Force.
Robert S. Johnson: 27 Victories and a Flight That Shouldn’t Have Happened
Robert S. Johnson, from Lawton, Oklahoma, was 23 years old on his first combat mission. He possessed the natural gifts that flight instructors recognize on sight and cannot quite teach - spatial awareness, aggressive instinct, an ability to read a developing fight.
He ended the war with 27 confirmed aerial victories, every one of them in a P-47 Thunderbolt.
On June 26, 1943, Johnson was escorting bombers when a Focke-Wulf 190 caught him. The German pilot put a sustained burst through the cockpit. The canopy was blown partially open and jammed there. Hydraulic lines were severed, flooding the cockpit floor. Johnson was wounded, his instruments destroyed, over the North Sea with almost no good options.
He couldn’t bail out - the jammed canopy blocked him. He couldn’t ditch cleanly without hydraulics. He pointed the nose toward England and flew.
A Focke-Wulf 190 pulled alongside. The German pilot, out of ammunition, looked across at the shattered cockpit and the pilot still in it. He flew close enough that Johnson could see his face. Then he rocked his wings and turned east.
Johnson flew the Thunderbolt home. The ground crew counted more than 200 bullet and cannon hits in the airframe. The airplane never flew again. Johnson flew 27 more missions and rotated home after reaching 27 victories. His memoir, Thunderbolt, remains one of the finest accounts of fighter combat to come out of that war.
Francis Gabreski: The Most Aerial Victories of Any American Pilot in Europe
Francis “Gabby” Gabreski, from Oil City, Pennsylvania, was a Polish-American pilot who early in his career worked harder than he was naturally gifted. That made him, in the long run, more dangerous - what he earned through discipline he owned completely.
Gabreski had the foresight to request permission to fly with a Royal Air Force Polish squadron before returning to operational duty. These pilots had been fighting since the fall of Poland in 1939 and understood Luftwaffe tactics at a depth that no classroom could replicate. What Gabreski absorbed from that experience came directly into the cockpit over Germany.
He finished his European tour with 28 confirmed aerial victories - the most of any American pilot in the European Theater of Operations.
On July 20, 1944, on a low-level strafing run near a German airfield, Gabreski came in too shallow. The propeller struck the ground. He set the crippled Thunderbolt down in a German field, climbed out, and walked west. He was captured after several days and spent the rest of the war at Stalag Luft One in Barth, on the Baltic coast - where he eventually encountered Hub Zemke.
Zemke’s War Ends in Clear Air
In October 1944, Zemke was transferred from the 56th to command the 479th Fighter Group, which was converting to Mustangs. On a mission over Germany, his P-51 flew into severe clear-air turbulence and came apart around him. He parachuted out and came down in Germany.
As the senior American officer at Stalag Luft One, Zemke organized the camp and maintained order among thousands of Allied prisoners. When the war ended in Europe and the Red Army reached the camp, he was central to arranging the return of over 9,000 American and British prisoners to Allied lines.
The P-51 Question: Why the 56th Stayed
As Mustangs began flowing into the Eighth Air Force through late 1943 and into 1944, other fighter groups converted. The 4th Fighter Group - the old Eagle Squadron pilots who had flown Spitfires with the RAF before America entered the war - switched to Mustangs and became the 56th’s primary rivals at the top of the scoring list. The conventional wisdom was clear: the Mustang was the better fighter, and the Jug was yesterday’s airplane.
Zemke didn’t agree. He had the Thunderbolt dialed in. His pilots knew it cold. And his numbers supported staying. The 56th was the last major fighter group in the Eighth Air Force to seriously consider converting, and many of its pilots never flew the Mustang before the war ended.
When the final tallies were counted, the 56th Fighter Group had 674 aerial victories - more than any other fighter group in the entire Eighth Air Force. More than the 4th. More than any Mustang group in England.
They did it in the airplane everyone said was obsolete.
Ground Attack: The Thunderbolt’s Second War
By mid-1944, the P-47 had found a second mission that suited it as well as high-altitude escort: ground attack. With eight .50-calibers and racks for bombs or rockets, the Thunderbolt became the primary close air support aircraft for the Ninth Air Force as Allied armies swept across France after the Normandy breakout. The German army learned to fear the sight of Jugs rolling in on a strafing run.
Part of what made the P-47 effective at low altitude was the same thing that made it survivable everywhere: the air-cooled R-2800. Liquid-cooled engines like the Mustang’s Packard-Merlin had a critical vulnerability - one hole in the cooling system and the temperature climbed, and the engine could quit within minutes. The R-2800 didn’t work that way. Lose a cylinder, and the rest kept turning.
Pilots came home from strafing runs with holes punched through the cowling, cylinders knocked completely off the engine block, and the big radial still grumbling at reduced power, making enough thrust to get home. Mechanics at forward bases said the Jug was bulletproof. It wasn’t - the combat record showed that honestly. But it was as close as anything flying over Europe in that war, and on a low-level attack run through concentrated flak, that durability was not a small matter.
The Bubble Canopy and What It Changed
Early production Thunderbolts had a tall fuselage spine behind the cockpit that severely limited rearward visibility - a serious tactical liability in a turning fight. The bubble-canopy versions that began appearing through 1944 replaced that spine with a fully blown Plexiglas enclosure, giving the pilot an almost unobstructed 360-degree view.
Pilots who transitioned from the razorback to the bubble-top described it as having the walls of the cockpit taken down.
Legacy and Survivors
The Thunderbolt flew in every theater of the war - European, Pacific, China-Burma-India. Brazilian squadrons flew them over Italy. Free French squadrons flew them over occupied France. After the war, a dozen foreign air forces operated them, some into the early 1960s.
Gabreski came home, stayed in the Air Force, transitioned to jets, and flew F-86 Sabres in Korea, adding 6.5 more aerial victories over MiG-15s. He became one of a very small number of Americans confirmed as an ace in two separate wars. He credited the Thunderbolt directly - said that what the P-47 taught about managing energy, patience in the attack, and the geometry of a gunnery pass carried over into every cockpit he sat in afterward.
Hub Zemke lived until 1994. Robert Johnson until 2009. Francis Gabreski until 2002.
Between 12 and 15 P-47 Thunderbolts are considered airworthy in any given year. Fewer than 40 survive in any form at all.
