The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, Alexander Kartveli's Jug, and the Seven-Ton Fighter That Brought Pilots Home When Nothing Else Should Have

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the heaviest single-engine fighter of WWII - and its near-indestructibility made it one of the most effective combat aircraft ever built.

On June 26, 1943, Second Lieutenant Robert Johnson flew a shattered P-47 Thunderbolt back to England through more than 200 bullet holes, a jammed canopy, lost hydraulics, and a smoking cockpit - because the airplane simply refused to die. The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, known universally as the Jug, was the biggest, heaviest single-engine fighter put into combat in the Second World War. Its combination of raw power, structural resilience, and altitude performance made it one of the most effective - and most survivable - combat aircraft of the entire conflict.

The Incident That Defined a Reputation

Johnson’s encounter on June 26, 1943 was not an isolated stroke of luck. His aircraft absorbed approximately 20 rounds from a Focke-Wulf 190 that hit from above before Johnson could react. The cockpit was shot through, the hydraulics were gone, and the canopy was jammed shut, leaving him with no way to bail out of a burning airplane over occupied Europe.

A second Fw 190 pulled alongside and fired additional bursts. The rounds connected. Nothing vital failed. The German pilot, reportedly out of ammunition or simply unable to comprehend that the aircraft was still flying, broke off and turned east. Johnson flew west and landed at RAF Manston. Ground crews counted more than 200 holes in the airframe.

Two Men from Georgia: De Seversky and Kartveli

The Thunderbolt’s story begins not on Long Island where it was built, but in Tiflis, Georgia - the old Georgia, on the south slope of the Caucasus.

Alexander de Seversky was born there in 1894, then part of the Russian Empire. His father was one of the first private citizens in Russia to own an airplane. De Seversky attended the Imperial Russian Naval Academy, became a combat pilot in the First World War, and in 1915 lost his right leg when a bomb detonated prematurely during a Baltic mission. He was 21 years old.

He went to the Tsar personally and argued that an experienced combat pilot with one leg outweighed a green pilot with two. The Tsar agreed. De Seversky returned to combat and finished the war with 13 aerial victories. He came to the United States in 1918, became an American citizen, and in 1931 founded Seversky Aircraft Corporation on Long Island, New York.

Alexander Kartveli was also from the old Georgia. He arrived in the United States by way of Paris, where he had studied engineering and worked among France’s leading aircraft designers. He joined Seversky Aircraft in 1931 with an aeronautical mind that came along once in a generation.

De Seversky was the visionary and the salesman. Kartveli was the engineer who turned vision into flyable metal.

Engineering the Jug: The R-2800 and the Turbosupercharger

When the Army Air Corps issued a requirement in 1940 for a fighter capable of operating above 30,000 feet, Kartveli built his design around the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp - an 18-cylinder, air-cooled radial arranged in two rows of nine, producing 2,045 horsepower at takeoff.

To make that engine perform at altitude, where thin air starves conventional superchargers, Kartveli designed a massive turbosupercharger system that ran through the belly of the fuselage. Exhaust from the engine traveled the full length of the airframe to a turbine mounted near the tail, which drove the supercharger, which fed compressed air back to the engine up front. The ductwork to make this work consumed the entire rear fuselage.

The result was an airplane that was unavoidably large. With the airframe, armor plating, self-sealing fuel tanks, and eight .50-caliber Browning machine guns in the wings, the P-47 weighed approximately 9,000 pounds empty. In combat configuration - fueled and loaded - it approached 14,000 pounds. Some ground-attack variants went heavier still.

The Spitfire weighed about 5,500 pounds empty.

Pilots called it the Jug. Seen from behind, the fat round radial and wide fuselage resembled a milk jug. The name was not a compliment, exactly. But it stuck.

Why the Thunderbolt Was Nearly Indestructible

The air-cooled radial was central to the P-47’s legendary durability. Unlike liquid-cooled inline engines, the R-2800 could lose individual cylinders and keep running. A single rifle-caliber round through a liquid-cooled engine’s coolant system could bring it down within minutes. That same round striking one cylinder of the R-2800 might not change the engine note at all. Pilots returned from combat with cylinders shot away, bent pushrods, and damaged ignition systems - with the engine still pulling them home.

Pilots transitioning from lighter fighters described the cockpit the way someone describes moving from a studio apartment into a house. The instrument panel was comprehensive, the seat relatively comfortable, and there was genuine room to move. Francis Gabreski, who became the leading American ace against the Luftwaffe, said the airplane’s size, which had felt daunting at first, became reassuring once he understood what it could absorb. He trusted it the way you trust a reliable working dog rather than a thoroughbred.

In a dive, the Thunderbolt was nearly uncatchable. Gun camera footage from the period shows how quickly it built speed going downhill - fast enough that compressibility effects became a genuine hazard as pilots pushed toward the aircraft’s Mach limits. Pilots who learned to manage the dive had a weapon that almost nothing in the Luftwaffe’s inventory could catch once it committed downhill.

The Range Problem That Cost Bombers Their Escort

The early P-47’s greatest vulnerability was its legs, not its airframe.

The Eighth Air Force was running bomber missions deep into Germany. The B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators needed fighter escort, but the early P-47, operating from England, had a combat radius of roughly 200 miles. That was enough to push the bombers partway into Europe. When the fighters had to turn for home, the Luftwaffe was waiting.

The losses were catastrophic. The second Schweinfurt raid in October 1943 lost 60 bombers and 600 men in a single afternoon.

The solution was external fuel. Drop tanks - first a belly ferry tank, later larger wing tanks - eventually pushed the P-47’s combat radius to 450 miles or better. Still not Berlin from England, but enough to keep bomber formations alive through the most lethal stretch of the route into the Reich.

The Aces Who Flew the Jug

Francis Gabreski flew with the 56th Fighter Group - the same group as Robert Johnson. The son of Polish immigrants from Oil City, Pennsylvania, Gabreski flew with what his squadron mates described as controlled ferocity. He finished the European theater with 28 aerial victories, the highest total of any American pilot fighting the Luftwaffe.

In the Pacific, where the P-38 Lightning typically drew the headlines, Neel Kearby took a Thunderbolt and proved it could fight in that theater too. In October 1943, Kearby shot down six Japanese aircraft in a single mission, an action for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He ended his career with 22 aerial victories before being killed in combat in 1944, pressing an engagement he had been warned not to push.

The Jabos: Ground Attack and the Thunderbolt’s Lasting Legacy

By the second half of the war, the P-47 had found the role that would define much of its legacy. Ground attack.

The Ninth Air Force flew Thunderbolts across the roads of France and Germany, hunting trucks, trains, tanks, artillery positions, and fuel depots. The aircraft could carry rockets, bombs, and incendiaries and still absorb ground fire that would have destroyed a lighter airplane. German forces called them Jabos - from Jagdbomber, fighter-bomber - a word that carried a specific dread. A tank might survive a near miss from a bomb. It would not survive a full rocket salvo from a Thunderbolt coming in low and fast, with eight .50-calibers stitching the road ahead of it.

More than 15,600 P-47 Thunderbolts were built before the war ended, making it among the two most-produced American fighters of the conflict. The P-51 Mustang collected more of the postwar glamour - it had the range to reach Berlin, and a laminar flow wing that looked the part. The Thunderbolt was the workhorse. The truck. The airplane you called when something needed to be destroyed and needed to come back.

After the war, the P-47 served with air forces across the world. Brazil flew them into the 1950s. France flew them in Indochina. The airplane had outlasted the war it was built for.

The Men Behind the Machine

Alexander Kartveli spent his postwar career at Republic Aviation, designing not only the Thunderbolt but the F-84 Thunderjet and eventually the F-105 Thunderchief, carrying American airpower into the jet age. Alexander de Seversky continued to write and advocate for air power until late in his life.

Both men died in 1974, within months of each other.
