Why William Piper Mattered

Piper looked at that homely little airplane the way Henry Ford looked at the automobile. He didn’t see a toy for wealthy sportsmen - he saw a machine for everybody.

His stubborn idea was that if you built an airplane simple enough, cheap enough, and forgiving enough, you could sell flying to ordinary Americans the way Ford sold the Model T. That single conviction is why so many people fly today.

How Fast Is a Piper Cub?

Not fast at all - and that was never the point.

A Cub cruises at roughly 70 to 75 miles per hour in smooth air. In a stiff headwind, you can nearly watch cars pass you on the highway below. Cub pilots joke that the airplane can barely outrun its own shadow, and that the greatest danger in flying one is starving to death before you arrive.

What made the Cub special was that it forgives you. Stall it and it simply nods its nose down and starts flying again - no vicious wing drop. It lands slow, at about 40 miles per hour with the throttle back, settling onto two main wheels and rolling to a stop in a couple hundred feet, on grass, dirt, or a farmer’s field. How the Cub Taught America to Fly

When the United States entered World War II, the government needed tens of thousands of pilots - and a way to give young men their first taste of flight before advanced trainers.

That program was the Civilian Pilot Training Program, and the airplane that did more primary training than any other was the little yellow Cub. Historians estimate that about three out of four American pilots of that era first felt an airplane leave the ground in a Piper Cub. That small airplane is very likely why a whole generation of fighter pilots and bomber crews knew which end of the stick to push.

The Cub Goes to War: The L-4 Grasshopper

The Cub served in combat, too. Painted olive drab and fitted with extra windows for visibility, it became the L-4, nicknamed the Grasshopper.

Flying low and slow over the front lines in 1944 - over Normandy, Italy, and the push across France - Grasshopper pilots carried no armor and no guns, just a radio and sharp eyes. They loitered over enemy positions, watched where artillery shells landed, and called in corrections. German gunners hated these little airplanes more than fighters, because a Grasshopper overhead meant accurate artillery was about to rain down.

One Grasshopper pilot, Charles Carpenter, got so fed up being shot at that he strapped bazookas to the wing struts of his L-4 and went hunting tanks. He named his airplane Rosie the Rocketer - a 65-horsepower fabric Cub knocking out armored vehicles.

The Postwar Boom and the $1,000 Airplane

When the war ended, the young men who had learned to fly in Cubs came home wanting airplanes of their own, and Piper was ready.

The factory at Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, cranked out yellow Cubs by the tens of thousands - at the peak, the story goes, a finished Cub rolled out the door about every 20 minutes. And the price will make any modern pilot grumble: a brand-new Piper Cub cost right around $1,000.

Why the Cub Is the Heart of EAA

The Cub is the taproot of everything the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) stands for.

When Paul Poberezny gathered a handful of enthusiasts in a basement in 1953 to found the EAA, the animating idea was that flying belonged to regular people - that an ordinary working person ought to be able to build, restore, own, and fly an airplane without being a millionaire. No aircraft ever made that case better than the Cub. You can re-cover its fabric in your garage and rebuild its Continental on a workbench. It is the people’s airplane.

Walk the vintage rows at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and the Cubs are always there: rows of Lock Haven yellow glowing in the morning sun, the little black lightning bolt down the cowl, the bear cub logo on the tail. Every so often one fires up, lifts off in a few hundred feet of grass, and climbs away as slow, gentle, and honest as the day it was built.

A Cub doesn’t ask you to be a hero. It just asks you to fly it well - and rewards you when you do.
