How Do I Evaluate Myself as the Pilot? (IMSAFE)

The Pilot bucket is the one most of us skip because it’s uncomfortable to look at honestly. The FAA gives you a tool for it: IMSAFE.

Run these six items on yourself the way you’d run a checklist on the airplane:

  • I - Illness: Any sickness, even a head cold caught from the kids? A stuffy head at altitude can become a blocked sinus that feels like an ice pick behind your eye on descent.
  • M - Medication: Anything you took could cause drowsiness or impairment.
  • S - Stress: In our scenario, you’re already thinking about Monday.
  • A - Alcohol: Recent consumption and its lingering effects.

In the scenario, the Pilot bucket is already filling - a little tired, a little stressed, maybe a cold coming on. None of that grounds you alone. But write it down and keep it in view.

Here’s the part worth memorizing: the most dangerous version of you isn’t the one who feels terrible - it’s the one who feels fine but is actually running at about 70 percent. You don’t notice the missing 30 percent until you need it, and you need it exactly when things go sideways.

Is My Aircraft Right for This Flight?

Pilots are usually strong here because it resembles the checklists we already know. Confirm the basics: Is the airplane airworthy? Is required maintenance done? Do you have fuel for the trip plus real reserves - not the legal minimum you sweat over the last twenty miles?

But the Aircraft bucket is bigger than airworthiness. It asks whether this airplane fits this flight:

  • Is it equipped for conditions you might actually meet? A bare-bones trainer with steam gauges and no autopilot is a factor if there’s any chance of instrument weather.
  • How well do you know this specific airplane? A rental you’ve flown three times is not the airplane you’ve owned for a decade and know by sound.

In our scenario, it’s a rental you know a little, it’s fueled, legal, and airworthy. That bucket is actually looking okay. Not every bucket fills - the point is to find out which ones do.

How Do I Assess the Environment?

The enVironment bucket is the big one, and it’s more than weather - though weather is the heavyweight. Environment covers weather, terrain, airport conditions, airspace, and time of day.

Weather. Pull the real briefing, not the app glance in the parking lot. Say a line of showers is forecast to arrive near your home airport right as you’d be getting close, with ceilings dropping. That’s not an automatic no-go - but it’s a clock. You’re now racing weather, and weather doesn’t care about your Monday.

Time of day. It’s late afternoon. A 200-mile trip launched now puts you home after sunset. Are you night current? Is your family comfortable flying at night? Is the terrain along the route friendly in the dark? Night doesn’t make you illegal if you’re current, but it takes options away: you can’t see the weather ahead, and you can’t see a good field if the engine quits. Every problem gets harder in the dark.

Terrain and airports. What’s your out? If weather closes in, where do you divert? Are there airports with fuel, lighting, and an approach along the way - or a long stretch of nothing?

In the scenario, this bucket fills fast: deteriorating weather on a schedule and an arrival that slides into darkness over unfriendly country. And remember - the Pilot bucket already had water in it.

Why Are External Pressures the Most Dangerous Bucket?

External pressures are all the reasons to complete the flight that have nothing to do with whether the flight is safe. Work Monday. School. The rental’s due back. You told everyone you’d be home tonight. Turning around feels like admitting defeat.

Every one of those is a hand on your back pushing you toward the airplane - and not one has anything to do with weather, the aircraft, or your condition. The airplane cannot feel your deadline. Physics does not negotiate with your work schedule.

This is where get-there-itis lives. Pilots who fly into terrain, press into weather they shouldn’t, or run a tank dry are almost never foolish. They’re people with a good reason to be somewhere, and that reason quietly overrode every warning the other three buckets were throwing.

The antidote is simple to say and hard to do: manage external pressures before the flight, not during it. On the ground, calm, decide your alternate plan. Tell your family the plan and the backup before you load up: “If the weather looks like this, we’re not going tonight - we get a hotel and leave in the morning.” Say it out loud to the people you’re trying so hard to get home to. Your spouse would rather spend forty dollars on a motel than plan a funeral. Said that plainly, it cuts right through the pressure.

What Do I Do When a Bucket Is Full?

Total up the scenario: Pilot - tired, stressed, maybe a cold. Aircraft - fine. Environment - weather declining on a clock, arrival after dark over rough country. External - a stack of deadlines pushing you out the door.

Three of four buckets are full or filling. No single one is a killer, but look at the picture: a slightly degraded pilot flying into worsening weather, at night, pushed hard by a schedule. That’s not a dramatic story - it’s the boring, ordinary setup behind a huge number of accidents. It doesn’t feel dangerous. It just feels like a Sunday.

Here’s the part people miss: PAVE is a risk-management tool, not just a go/no-go switch. Most of the time your job isn’t to cancel - it’s to lower the water in a bucket until the whole picture is acceptable.

  • Delay to morning. Launch first thing tomorrow. The weather line has passed, you’ve slept (draining the Pilot bucket), and you’re flying in daylight. One decision empties two buckets - and you never canceled the trip. You moved it eight hours and made it dramatically safer.
  • Fly partway. If you must make progress tonight, fly the first hour in good daylight, land at an airport with a hotel short of the bad weather, and finish in the morning. That drains External pressure (you’ve made progress) and caps Environment (you’ve stopped short of weather and dark).

That’s real decision making - not brave, not timid, just managing the stack.

How Does PAVE Fit “Perceive, Process, Perform”?

The FAA frames aeronautical decision making as a loop: perceive, process, perform. You perceive the hazards - PAVE is your perceiving tool, all four buckets. You process them by weighing how bad the risk actually is. You perform by acting: cancel, delay, reroute, or decide it’s genuinely fine to go. PAVE lives in that first step - and perceiving is the step everybody skips.
