  • Fuel: Do you have fuel for the flight plus your reserves plus a real alternate - not a hopeful one?
  • Weight and balance: Is the airplane actually within limits with these people, these bags, and full tanks? Or did you assume it works because it usually does?
  • Equipment: Is everything you’ll need actually working? A day trip in good weather forgives a lot. A night cross-country over dark terrain does not forgive a weak electrical system or a landing light you’ve been meaning to replace.

It’s the passengers who took the day off to be here. The meeting tomorrow you promised you’d make. The rental you have to return, the family event you can’t miss, the money you already spent, the ego that doesn’t want to admit you turned around.

You’re a fresh private pilot, 200 hours or less. You planned a cross-country to see family about two and a half hours away, and you want to come home the same evening. Run the letters:

  • Pilot: Healthy and current, but you were up late and you’ve flown this route exactly zero times. Not a stop sign - a yellow flag.
  • Aircraft: Good, fueled, in limits. Green.
  • Environment: The return forecast is marginal visual conditions, deteriorating after sunset, with part of the route home over unlit terrain in the dark. Two flags, darker than yellow.
