A couple of friends want to fly roughly an hour and a half away for a famous burger at a grass-field café. Blue sky out the window. This is exactly why you learned to fly.
Before you untie the airplane, work the four buckets.
P - Pilot: Are you current and competent for this flight?
Inside the Pilot bucket lives a second checklist: IMSAFE - Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, and Emotion (or Eating). Are you sick? On anything that fogs you up? Did you sleep? Are you fighting with someone?

V - enVironment: What is the weather and daylight actually going to do?
This is where the trip starts to turn. Right now it’s severe clear. But the TAF for your destination notes that later in the afternoon the ceiling becomes broken at 2,500 feet, wind picks up, and there’s a chance of rain moving in from the west by early evening.
And here’s the line nobody circles: sunset is at 6:45.
So a day-current pilot with zero recent night landings is planning a flight whose return leg brushes right up against sunset and deteriorating weather, into a grass strip you’ve never seen. In this morning’s sunshine, none of that feels real. That’s the trap. Bucket V: high risk.
