Do you have a head cold that will turn into a sinus block on descent? Did you take something last night that’s still in your system? Are you flying because you want to, or because you had a fight and want to be alone at five thousand feet? How much sleep did you actually get?
And remember: currency is legal, but proficiency is real. They are not the same thing, and the airplane does not check your logbook.
A - Aircraft
Is this specific airplane, loaded this specific way, right for this specific flight? Is it airworthy, is the annual current, are the required inspections done?
Then go deeper than legal. How much fuel do you really have against how far you’re really going, with a real reserve, not a hopeful one? What’s your weight and balance with these people and these bags? What will density altitude do to your climb rate off a short strip on a hot afternoon? A day-VFR airplane is a wonderful thing - right up until the day tries to turn into night, or the VFR tries to turn into cloud.
V - enVironment
We steal the V out of the middle because E was already busy. This is the big bucket.
Weather, obviously - ceilings, visibility, winds, and the forecast trend, whether things are getting better or worse along your route. But environment is more than weather. It’s terrain. It’s airspace. It’s the airport itself: runway length, slope, obstacles, the note in the chart supplement about deer on the field at dusk. It’s day versus night, because night quietly removes your best tool - your eyes. It’s the temporary flight restriction you didn’t check for. Environment is everything outside the airplane and outside you.
E - External Pressures
This is the one that kills people who should have known better. External pressure is every reason to complete the flight that has nothing to do with whether the flight is safe: the family waiting, the meeting Monday morning, the money already spent, the friends who took the day off, the little voice saying real pilots don’t scrub. Get-there-itis has a body count, and it’s a long one.
Why Do Small Risks Stack Up Into Big Ones?
The power of PAVE is not in any one letter. It’s in what happens when the letters stack.
Any single risk, by itself, is usually manageable. A little fatigue? You can handle that. A marginal ceiling? Wait, or pick another route. A short runway? You know how to fly a short field. Passengers who want to get home? Have a conversation.
But flying doesn’t hand you risks one at a time. It hands them to you in a pile. Accidents happen when three or four yellow items - none of them red on their own - add up to a situation no reasonable pilot would have chosen if they’d seen the whole picture at once. The risks multiply. They do not add.
A Real Example: The Marginal-VFR Saturday
Here’s the pile in real life.
The airplane was a Cessna 172, fresh out of annual, full tanks, nothing on the squawk sheet. That’s the A, and it was green across the board - which is exactly why it almost fooled me.
The mission was a cross-country to see family, about two and a half hours out. My daughter had an event that afternoon, and we’d told everyone we’d be there. That’s the E - external pressure, and a lot of it. The car was already loaded.
Now the P. I’d slept about five hours, up late wrestling with something at work, carrying that stress into the cockpit. IMSAFE was flashing two lights: stress and fatigue. Not disqualifying on their own. Just eating into my margins.
And the V - the killer that morning. The departure was severe clear, light winds, gorgeous. But the forecast down the route, and especially at the destination, showed a front sliding through in the early afternoon: ceilings dropping, visibility falling into the ugly marginal-VFR band, rain developing. The Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) had a TEMPO group putting the destination right at the edge of what a VFR pilot has any business flying into - right around my arrival time.
Look at that pile: green airplane, yellow pilot, yellow-to-red environment building at exactly the wrong time, and a trailer full of external pressure. The trap is that the takeoff looked perfect. But you don’t launch into the destination weather - you launch into the departure weather, then fly straight into the part that hurts you, two hours later, tired, with family on board.
What Are Personal Minimums, and How Do I Set Them?
What turned that Saturday around wasn’t superior airmanship. It was a number I’d written down years earlier, when my head was clear. That’s the other half of the topic: personal minimums.
Your legal minimums are set by regulation, and they’re the same for you as for a thirty-thousand-hour airline captain - three miles visibility, certain cloud clearances, day VFR. The regs don’t know you got your ticket eight months ago, or how tired you are today.
Personal minimums are the numbers you set for yourself - more conservative than the law - in the calm of your living room, precisely so they’re already decided when someone is pressuring you. Write down, on paper:
- The lowest ceiling you’ll launch into
- The lowest visibility
- The maximum crosswind component you’ll accept
- The most wind and the shortest runway
- The highest density altitude
- Your fuel reserve and your night limits
Treat it like a limitation in a pilot’s operating handbook - because that’s exactly what it is. It’s the operating handbook for you.
The examiner is looking for this. Open your ACS and read the risk management rows, not just the skill rows. On the private and instrument checkrides, the ACS explicitly wants you to identify, assess, and mitigate risk, talk through PAVE, and mean the words “personal minimums.” A checkride isn’t just whether you can hold altitude in a steep turn - it’s whether you have a decision-making process when handed a marginal-weather scenario.
My written minimum said I would not launch toward a destination forecast to be below a certain ceiling and visibility around my arrival time. Not currently below - forecast below. That morning, with the gorgeous departure out the window and everyone in the car, the destination forecast was under my line.
I didn’t have to win an argument at the airport. I’d already won it years earlier when I wrote the number down. We drove. We were late. Everybody lived. The front came through the destination almost exactly as forecast - marginal, wet, and ugly - right about the time I’d have been trying to squeeze underneath it.
The best decisions in aviation are boring. Nobody writes a magazine article about the flight you didn’t take.
How Do I Actually Use This on My Next Flight?
First, run PAVE out loud at the table before every real flight - not just the hard ones. Say the words: Pilot, Aircraft, enVironment, External pressures. It takes ninety seconds and forces you to look in the corners you’d otherwise skip.
Second, count your yellows. Don’t ask whether any single thing is bad enough to cancel. Ask how many marginal items you’re stacking. One yellow: proceed with a plan. Two yellows: get serious, build in outs, tighten your limits. Three yellows: you’re almost certainly looking at a no-go - and the fact that no single item feels like a dealbreaker is exactly the illusion that gets people killed.
Third, write your personal minimums down this week, when it’s calm, and treat them as if the FAA printed them. Put a number on ceiling, visibility, crosswind, runway length, night, and fuel reserve. Then decide in advance: you may raise those numbers on a bad day, but never lower them at the airport. With the car loaded and the family waiting, the airport is the one place on earth you’re least qualified to renegotiate your own safety limits.
Fourth, name the external pressure out loud. Just say it: “I really want to make this trip because…” When you name it, it loses most of its power, because you can finally see it for what it is - a want, not a reason.
These little checklists - PAVE, IMSAFE, personal minimums - all exist so a calm version of you can make decisions for the tired, pressured, hopeful version who shows up on the actual morning. That’s not weakness. That’s a professional protecting an amateur, and both of them are you.
