The Mode C veil is a ring of airspace 30 nautical miles in radius around the nation’s busiest Class Bravo airports, extending from the surface up to 10,000 feet MSL. Inside it, your aircraft must have an operating transponder with altitude reporting (Mode C) - and, since 2020, ADS-B Out - even if you never enter the Bravo or talk to a controller. It is a visibility requirement, not a clearance requirement, and it’s one of the most commonly overlooked pieces of airspace on the sectional.

What Is the Mode C Veil?

Picture the sectional over Chicago. O’Hare’s Class Bravo shows up as solid blue rings stacked like an upside-down wedding cake. Everyone knows to stay out of those unless cleared in.

But there’s a second, fainter circle: a dashed magenta line drawn 30 nautical miles from the center of the airport. That’s the Mode C veil, and most students look right past it.

The rule inside that ring is simple to state: your transponder has to be on and reporting your altitude the entire time you’re within 30 miles, from the surface to 10,000 feet MSL. The relevant regulation is FAR 91.215 (transponder and altitude reporting equipment requirements).

Mode C Veil vs. Class Bravo: What’s the Difference?

This distinction is everything. The two rules live in the same neighborhood but do completely different jobs.

Class Bravo (the blue rings) is a clearance requirement. You cannot enter without hearing the specific words “cleared into the Bravo.” Until you hear them, you stay out.

The Mode C veil is a transponder requirement. You are allowed to fly through the veil all day without talking to anyone - as long as you stay under the shelf of the Bravo and out of the blue rings. But the whole time you’re inside that 30-mile ring, you must be squawking Mode C with altitude.

In plain terms: the Bravo asks “may I come in?” The veil says “you will be visible.” Approach and Center need to see you and your altitude on the scope because you’re close enough to a major airport that a surprise primary return with no altitude data is a real problem.

Do I Need ADS-B in the Mode C Veil Too?

Yes. This trips up pilots who trained before 2020. Everywhere you’re required to have a Mode C transponder, you now also need ADS-B Out, under FAR 91.225.

The two requirements travel together - same airspace, same shelf, same 30-mile ring. The maps were drawn to match on purpose. If you’re required to squawk Mode C, you’re required to be transmitting ADS-B.

Why the Mode C Veil Matters on the Way to Oshkosh

If you’re flying to AirVenture from anywhere south, southeast, or southwest - Indiana, downstate Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, the whole middle of the country - your great-circle line to Oshkosh runs right past Chicago. Between O’Hare and Midway, that’s a lot of airspace in your path, and O’Hare’s 30-mile veil reaches out over the suburbs, the lakefront, and exactly the territory pilots use to sneak around the west side of the Bravo.

Here’s the trap. It’s a beautiful VFR morning, camping gear loaded, and you climb to 5,500 feet to stay comfortably under the Chicago Bravo shelf, threading between O’Hare and the lake. You are under the shelf. You are not in the blue. You are legal on airspace.

But you never confirmed the transponder was actually reporting altitude. Maybe the encoder quietly died last week. Maybe a controller once said “radar contact lost, verify transponder” and you meant to get it looked at. Now you’re 30 miles from O’Hare, deep in the veil, painting a primary target with no altitude - in violation of 91.215 whether anyone calls you on it or not.

The veil doesn’t announce itself. There’s no controller gatekeeping it. You can bust it in complete silence.

Three practical steps you can use on your next flight.

1. Confirm the transponder is alive before you need it. At a towered field, ask ground or tower for a transponder check on run-up - or you’ll get it naturally when approach calls “radar contact” and reads back your altitude. When a controller says radar contact and confirms your altitude readout appears accurate, that’s not chatter. That’s the system verifying your Mode C and ADS-B are doing their job. Treat it as a checklist item, not background noise.

2. Know where the veils are before you launch. Trace your route on the sectional or electronic chart on the ground, not while staring at the panel at 110 knots. Anywhere your route crosses a 30-mile ring around a Bravo, flag it - Chicago, or if you’re coming a different way, maybe Minneapolis or Detroit. Each of those big airports sits inside its own Mode C veil.

3. When in doubt, call approach for flight following. You don’t have to talk to anyone in the veil, but flight following through busy airspace near a Bravo is close to free insurance. You get a discrete squawk code, radar eyes on you, and if your transponder is having a bad day, the controller tells you right now - while you can still do something about it - instead of weeks later in a letter.

How Does This Show Up on the Checkride?

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) has an entire task on airspace: Class Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Golf, special use airspace, and the equipment requirements that go with each.

The examiner wants more than coloring the airspace on the chart. They want you to connect the airspace to the rules that live inside it. If you can point at that dashed magenta ring and say “that’s the Mode C veil - 30-mile radius, surface to 10,000 feet, and I need Mode C and ADS-B Out anywhere inside it even if I’m underneath the shelf,” you’ve shown the examiner you understand airspace the way a pilot in command has to.

Airspace is genuinely hard. It’s three-dimensional, the rules stack differently in different layers, and half of it is invisible - you can’t see a Mode C veil out the windshield. Give yourself some grace, but learn it. This is exactly the knowledge that keeps a good VFR cross-country from becoming a phone call with the Flight Standards District Office.

Don’t Confuse the Veil with the Other Rules Nearby

Several numbers live near a Bravo and pilots jam them together. Keep them separate.

  • The Mode C veil is 30 miles, surface to 10,000 MSL. It’s about being seen.
  • Above 10,000 feet MSL over most of the country, you also need a transponder - but that’s a different rule with different geography.
  • Speed limits are a separate matter about not overrunning slower traffic. Underneath the lateral shelf of a Class Bravo and in the VFR corridors near it, you’re held to 200 knots. Inside a Class Charlie or Delta - or within 4 miles of one below 2,500 feet - it’s the same 200 knots.

The veil is about visibility. The speed limit is about congestion. Two different problems, two different rules, both hanging around the same big airport.

Before every launch, put your finger on the transponder and ask three questions: Is it on? Is it reporting my altitude? And does my route cross any 30-mile ring where the answer to those first two had better be yes? Do that every time, and the Mode C veil stops being a trap.
