How the Jet Engine Was Born Twice, on Two Sides of the Channel

Frank Whittle, a Royal Air Force officer, filed the first turbojet engine patent in January 1930 at age 23. The Air Ministry dismissed it as too speculative. Whittle funded the work privately and ran a successful ground test in April 1937, still without official backing.

On the other side of the Channel, German physicist Hans von Ohain arrived at nearly identical ideas through completely independent work. He had never met Whittle and didn’t know his research existed. Von Ohain brought his concept to Ernst Heinkel, who funded it immediately. On August 27, 1939 - four days before Germany invaded Poland - test pilot Erich Warsitz flew the Heinkel He 178 from Marienehe airfield on pure jet power for approximately six minutes. The world had crossed a line, and almost no one knew.

Messerschmitt Begins Building the Airframe

Willy Messerschmitt’s design bureau began laying out the Me 262 airframe in 1938, before the engines existed. The design was swept and radical, built around the Junkers Jumo 004 axial-flow turbojet, which was still in development.

The Me 262 prototype made its first flight on April 18, 1941 - but not on jet power. With the Jumo engines still unfinished, test pilot Fritz Wendel flew it with a piston engine in the nose. The aircraft designed to end the propeller era was first proven by one.

The First Pure Jet Flight: July 18, 1942

On July 18, 1942, Wendel returned to the cockpit at Leipheim airfield in Bavaria with both Jumo 004s running. He pushed the throttles forward and felt none of the physical language of piston flight - no vibration, no mechanical roar. Just clean, continuous thrust.

He flew for 12 minutes. Speed exceeded 500 mph. That was not an incremental improvement over the existing state of the art. It was a different category entirely.

Adolf Galland’s Verdict

Adolf Galland - one of Germany’s most decorated fighter aces, a man who had flown every front-line Luftwaffe fighter in service - flew the Me 262 at Rechlin in May 1943. His account became one of the most quoted pilot statements of the entire war: it felt as though the angels were pushing.

Galland went straight to his superiors after landing. The Me 262 was fast enough to execute slashing attacks against Allied bomber formations and be clear before P-51 escort pilots could even establish a firing solution. His argument was direct: deploy it as a fighter immediately, before the daylight bombing campaign destroys what remains of German industry.

Hitler’s Bomber Obsession

On November 26, 1943, Hitler attended an Me 262 demonstration at Insterburg in East Prussia. He was impressed. Then he asked whether it could carry bombs.

Technically, yes - a small payload, with modifications. Hitler declared the Me 262 his Blitz Bomber: a fast strike aircraft to hit Allied invasion beachheads whenever the long-expected landing on the French coast came. The fighter mission was set aside.

Galland and senior Luftwaffe commanders pushed back at genuine personal risk. Albert Speer, the armaments minister, attempted to manage the politics. Neither succeeded. The program stalled in months of argument and reorganization while the strategic situation deteriorated. Historians estimate six months to a year of deployment time was lost to the dispute.

The Me 262 entered combat in meaningful numbers as a fighter in the summer of 1944. Allied forces had already landed at Normandy. The thousand-bomber raids over Germany continued without pause.

What the Aircraft Could Actually Do

The Me 262 carried four 30mm MK 108 cannons in the nose - heavy enough that pilots called the MK 108 a “flying bathtub.” A short burst into a B-17 was catastrophic. Some variants also carried 24 R4M unguided rockets under the wings, fired in a volley into tight bomber formations with devastating effect.

Tactics centered on high-speed slashing passes from ahead and below, through the formation and out the other side before any gunner could properly track. Any Me 262 pilot drawn into a turning fight had surrendered the aircraft’s only real advantage.

The Engineering Problems That Didn’t Make the Brochure

The Jumo 004 engines were temperamental. Turbine blades were cast from inferior alloys - Germany’s strategic metals were increasingly scarce - and engine life was approximately 25 hours before mandatory rebuild. Every combat sortie was flown knowing the engines might simply quit.

Throttle technique was critical. Advancing the throttles too aggressively caused compressor stalls or flameouts. Pilots had to learn a completely different approach to power management - smooth, patient inputs, nothing like piston technique.

The aircraft also required J2 synthetic diesel fuel, in dwindling supply as Allied bombing hammered German synthetic fuel plants. The most advanced aircraft in the world spent substantial time grounded on empty tanks.

The Airfield Hunting Trap

Allied commanders identified the vulnerability quickly. Fast in cruise, the Me 262 was slow and predictable during takeoff and landing, and its engines were dangerously slow to spool up if power was suddenly needed. P-51s and P-47s were assigned to orbit known Me 262 bases and wait.

The Luftwaffe’s response: Focke-Wulf 190s flew top cover for Me 262s during landing approaches. The fastest aircraft in the world needed piston-engine escorts to survive its own traffic pattern. That fact alone captures the strategic trap Germany was in by late 1944.

Jagdverband 44: The Last of the Best

Jagdverband 44 (JV 44), based in Bavaria in the closing weeks of the war, gathered some of the finest surviving Luftwaffe pilots to fly Me 262s in the final months. Johannes Steinhoff, Günther Lützow, and Adolf Galland - the man who had fought for the aircraft for two years - flew together in the unit. Combined, they had accumulated roughly a thousand aerial victories in piston aircraft.

Steinhoff survived an Me 262 takeoff crash in April 1945, badly burned and disfigured. He recovered, outlasted the war, and became one of the founders of the West German Luftwaffe during Germany’s postwar reconstruction.

The Final Tally

Germany produced approximately 1,400 Me 262s during the war. Operational numbers at any given time - accounting for losses, fuel shortages, and Allied bombing of production facilities - held around 300. The aircraft destroyed an estimated 500 to 600 Allied planes during its combat career.

Against an Allied air force flying thousands of sorties daily with effectively unlimited replacement aircraft and pilots, it was not enough.

The Legacy That Outlasted the War

Operation Paperclip brought German engineers and scientists to the United States after the war. The swept-wing aerodynamic research developed around the Me 262 directly influenced American jet design for decades. Some of those engineers later contributed to the American space program.

Surviving Me 262s are on display at the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport in Virginia and at the Royal Air Force Museum in Cosford, England. Period-accurate flying reproductions have appeared at EAA AirVenture at Oshkosh.

Fritz Wendel pushed those throttles forward at Leipheim in July 1942 and crossed a threshold that aviation had never crossed before. Every turbine built since - every commercial airliner flying today - is downstream of that moment.
