An in-flight fire is one of the most time-critical emergencies in aviation, and the response is often the opposite of your instincts. For an engine fire, you cut the fuel (mixture to idle cutoff), then point the nose down and increase airspeed so the rush of air blows the flames out - rather than slowing down, which lets the fire keep burning. Why Is an In-Flight Fire More Dangerous Than Engine Failure?

A dead engine is a glider problem, and every pilot is trained to fly a glider. A fire in flight is a clock problem - and the clock is not on your side.

There is no fire department at 3,000 feet. It’s just you, the checklist, and the airplane. Whatever you do in the next couple of minutes is the entire outcome.

The number that should make you sit up straight comes from decades of NTSB review of in-flight fires: from the moment a fire is burning in a small airplane, you may have only a handful of minutes before it burns through a control cable or fills the cabin with smoke you can’t see through or breathe.

The whole strategy reduces to three moves: identify it fast, attack the source, and get on the ground.

What Are the Three Types of In-Flight Fire?

The response is different for each type, and mixing them up is how pilots freeze. In a light airplane, there are three fires that matter:

  • Engine fire - up front, under the cowling, behind the firewall.
  • Electrical fire - behind the panel, where the wiring lives. Smells like burning plastic.
  • Cabin fire - something burning in the cockpit with you: a chart, upholstery, or a lithium device battery cooking off.

Each one has a different source, and killing the source is the key to each response.

How Do I Handle an Engine Fire in Flight?

This is the fire everyone pictures, and it contains the most counterintuitive step in all of general aviation.

Your gut will tell you to slow down and baby the airplane onto the ground. Do not do that. An engine fire is fed by fuel and by heat, and slowing down lets the fire sit there and cook.

Here’s the memory flow, and the why behind each step:

  1. Mixture to idle cutoff. Pull it all the way to lean, the way you do at shutdown. This starves the engine of fuel.
  2. Fuel selector to off. Cuts the supply feeding the fire.
  3. Fuel pump off (if it was running). No fuel, no fuel-fed fire.
  4. Cabin heat and defrost off. On many light singles, heat comes from a shroud around the exhaust, so an engine fire can pump carbon monoxide and smoke straight into the cabin. You want the fire and its smoke on the far side of the firewall.
  5. Nose down, get fast. Point the nose down and let airspeed build in the descent - sometimes toward the top of the green arc, or beyond it if your book says so.
  6. Fly the airplane to a forced landing.

The engine is going to quit. Let it. You’d rather have a dead engine and a dying fire than a running engine feeding an inferno against your firewall.

Why Do You Speed Up - Not Slow Down - During an Engine Fire?

Because airflow is your fire extinguisher. A high-speed descent shoves a huge volume of cold air through the engine compartment and can literally blow the flames out while carrying the heat away.

Think of it as snuffing a candle with a firehose of wind. Slowing down does the exact opposite - it lets the fire linger and keep burning.

So you cut the fuel, point the nose down, and use the airplane itself as the extinguisher while you set up for a forced landing. On a checkride, examiners are looking for exactly this: go immediately and decisively to the fuel from memory, then fly the airplane. Hesitation is what fails you.

How Do I Handle an Electrical Fire?

An electrical fire is a different animal, so the tool is different. Fire needs three things - fuel, heat, and oxygen. For an electrical fire, the “fuel” is the electricity itself.

So the move is to cut the power: master switch off. That kills the source feeding the short.

Yes, you lose your radios, transponder, electric flaps, and night lighting. That is a trade you make on purpose. A dead radio is an inconvenience; an electrical fire that keeps burning is a killer. You can fly with no electrical system - navigate by the window and the compass, and land at an uncontrolled field. That’s a survivable afternoon.

The smart version, if you have even a second: consider whether you can isolate it first. Many fires are one circuit or one bad piece of gear. If time permits, shed the electrical load piece by piece or pull the breaker on the offending circuit, and you may keep the rest of your panel alive. But “time permits” is doing heavy lifting - if the cabin is filling with smoke, cut the master and deal with the consequences.

One more rule I wish someone had told me: do not turn things back on to check if the fire is out. That instinct is how you re-energize a short and reignite a fire you already beat. Once it’s off in a real electrical fire, leave it off and land.

What Should I Do About a Cabin Fire?

A cabin fire is something burning in the cockpit with you - often a lithium battery in a headset or tablet, a possibility we didn’t have to think about twenty years ago.

This is where your fire extinguisher earns its existence. Ask yourself, on the ground, right now:

  • Do you have one in the airplane?
  • Is it mounted where you can reach it with your seatbelt on?
  • Is it charged?
  • Can you use it without reading the label?

A fire extinguisher zip-tied behind the baggage net might as well be at home in your garage. Get a small Halon or Halon-replacement extinguisher, mount it by your legs or on the side of the seat, and put your hand on it during every preflight so the reach becomes muscle memory.

The technique is the same as any extinguisher: aim at the base of the fire, not the flames, and sweep. But there’s an aviation wrinkle - Halon byproducts are not something you want to breathe in a sealed cabin. So the guidance is to ventilate after you knock the fire down. Opening a vent feeds oxygen to a fire, so fight it first, then clear the air. If the smoke is bad enough that you can’t see, cracking a window for a breathable, visible layer of air is a judgment call: you accept feeding it a little to stay conscious and able to fly.

How Do Aviate, Navigate, Communicate Apply to a Fire?

The thread running through all three fires is the oldest rule in flying - in this exact order.

Aviate. Fly the airplane. A fire is loud, bright, and terrifying, and it will pull your attention forward into the flames. While you’re staring at the fire, nobody is flying the airplane. Keep the wings level and the nose where it belongs. The fire can’t fly you into the ground - only forgetting to fly can.

Navigate. You are landing; the only questions are where and how soon. If there’s a runway close, great. If there’s a field, a road, or a sandbar, that’s your runway now. Do not fly past a survivable landing spot hoping to reach a nicer one ten miles ahead. A three-minute fire does not care about the beautiful 5,000-foot runway a little farther on.

Communicate. This is last for a reason. Talking to ATC does not put out a single flame. If the airplane is flown and pointed somewhere, then key the mike: squawk 7700 (the emergency code) if you still have a transponder, declare an emergency, and say “mayday” three times, followed by who you are, what’s wrong, where you are, and what you intend to do. But if it comes down to talking or flying - you fly. A controller would rather learn later that you landed safely and said nothing than hear a textbook radio call from an airplane that flew into the trees.

How Do I Decide Where and When to Land?

An engine fire you’ve successfully starved and blown out becomes, essentially, a forced landing. Now you fly best glide and run your engine-out flow to a field.

But a fire you can’t put out changes the math entirely. Now speed matters more than glide range. You might deliberately descend faster than best glide, accepting a rougher arrival, because being on the ground in ninety seconds beats being airborne for three more minutes with a fire eating your airplane.

That’s a genuinely hard decision - and it’s one you should already have made in your head, on the ground, before you ever smell smoke.

Real-World Scenario: The Electrical Smell on a Cross-Country

You’re a private pilot with 300 hours, flying a Piper Cherokee on a cross-country at 5,500 feet on a clear afternoon. You smell something hot and electrical. Not much - just enough to make you go “huh.”

Your first move is nothing dramatic. Fly the airplane, sniff, and scan. Is it getting worse? Smoke or just smell? Coming from up front or behind the panel? You’re gathering information for about the length of one deep breath.

Now you see a thin wisp of smoke from behind the radio stack. That’s electrical - that’s your answer.

Now you act. You don’t wait for flames. You start shedding electrical load, and if it keeps building, master off, decisively. Pitch for best glide, pick the biggest, flattest field within easy reach, and turn toward it now while you still have altitude to spend. With the master off you have no radio, so don’t waste a second wishing you did. Fly the pattern to that field, get the extinguisher in your hand in case smoke turns to fire, and put it down - groundloop it into soft dirt if you have to. Airplanes are insured. You are not replaceable.

What made that work: you acted on the smell, not the flames. The pilots who don’t make it are so often the ones who spent their two good minutes deciding whether they really had an emergency.

Your Homework Before the Next Flight

Pull out the Pilot’s Operating Handbook for the airplane you actually fly and read the fire checklists tonight - not the generic ones, yours. The Cessna, Piper, Cirrus, and Beechcraft all say slightly different things, and the differences matter.

Find out whether your airplane wants the cabin heat off, exactly where the fuel shutoff is, and whether you have a fire extinguisher and where it’s mounted. Then brief it to yourself out loud, on the ground, until both flows come out without a card:

  • Engine fire: mixture, fuel, pump, nose down.
  • Electrical fire: master off.

That two minutes you save by knowing it cold is the two minutes the fire was going to take.
