An in-flight engine fire is one emergency where you are not trying to save the engine - you are trying to save yourself. The difference matters. With an engine failure, you’re trying to save the engine or at least manage a dead one. With a fire, you have already lost the engine. What you’re trying to save is you and your passengers. That shift in mindset is the whole game.

What Kind of Fire Are You Dealing With?

There are really three kinds of in-flight fire, and they don’t get the same response.

Engine fire. Something under the cowling is burning - usually fuel or oil finding an ignition source. Think a cracked fuel line, an unseated primer, or an induction backfire on start that you carried into the air. You might see smoke from the cowl seams or smell something hot and oily, especially in a low-wing airplane. That smell is data. Don’t talk yourself out of it.

Electrical fire. A different animal that smells different - burning insulation has a sharp, acrid, plastic smell most people recognize instantly. This one is about the master switch and the electrical system, and it deserves its own separate study.

Cabin fire. Something burning inside the cockpit with you. Also its own conversation.

What Do I Do First When I See Smoke?

Picture it: you’re at 3,000 feet in a Cessna 172 on a short cross-country. You notice the smell, then wisps of smoke curl back along the cowling and slide past the windshield. The engine is still running.

The first move is the same as almost every emergency you’ll ever have: fly the airplane. Pitch and power, and for one second make yourself the calmest person in the county. The airplane doesn’t know it’s on fire - it’s still flying. Your job in that first second is to not make it worse by freezing or by yanking.

What Are the Memory Items for an Engine Fire in Flight?

Say these out loud so they end up in your hands when the smoke is real:

Fuel selector off applies the same logic one level up. You’re closing the tank so no more fuel flows forward through the lines - and those lines may be exactly what’s leaking and burning.

Master switch off kills the electrical system, which removes an ignition source and stops the electric fuel pump if you have one running. But it also kills your radios, transponder, electric flaps, and electric gear on some airplanes. This is a real decision, not a reflex. How Does the Forward Slip Keep Flames Off the Cabin?

Now the engine is dead - you shut it down on purpose - and you’re flying a glider that may be on fire. You need to get down fast, in a way that pulls flames and smoke away from you and your passengers.

A fire needs air. The relative wind feeds oxygen to the flames, and in normal coordinated flight that wind comes straight at the nose and flows back along the fuselage - right toward you. A forward slip changes the angle: you bank one direction and hold opposite rudder, flying the airplane sideways through the air so the relative wind hits at an angle and the flames trail off to one side.

Which way do you slip? The rule of thumb in a low-wing airplane: slip so the flames are pushed away from the fuel tank in the wing and away from the cabin. Generally you set it up so the fire trails off to the side and slightly down - not licking back along the belly toward the tail and toward you.

The bonus is aerodynamic. A slip increases your rate of descent without increasing airspeed, which is exactly what you want: come down steeply while keeping speed under control.

Keep the priority straight. Getting down and getting stopped is the priority. The slip is a tool that helps you do that while managing where the flames go. If you’re low and the slip is more than you can manage while also finding a field, fly a stabilized steep descent and get it on the ground. Don’t let a perfect slip cost you the airplane.

Should I Try to Restart the Engine?

No. Once you have shut the engine down for a fire, you do not attempt a restart. There’s a version of engine roughness or a backfire on start where a checklist has you troubleshoot - that is not this. If you have flames or smoke from the cowl, the engine stays off. Restarting means feeding fuel back to the fire.

Putting It Together: The Full Scenario

You’re the Cessna at 3,000 feet with smoke past the windshield. You run the flow - mixture, fuel, master, off - and the engine winds down to a windmilling or stopped prop. It gets quiet in a way that raises the hair on your arms.

Now pitch for best glide and turn toward the best field you have - ideally the one you already picked in your head minutes ago while briefing your options. Set up the slip to keep flames off the cabin, manage the descent, and commit to the field.

If you got your radio call out before the master went off, you’ve declared: 7700 on the transponder if you had time, Mayday on the frequency you were already using, or 121.5. Notice the order: fly, fight the fire, navigate to the field, then communicate. Aviate, navigate, communicate - the fire doesn’t change that order, it just makes the first two happen faster.

Landing and Getting Out

You may be landing off-airport with a dead engine and possibly a fire, so fly it like the engine-out approach you practice: best glide until you have the field made, then configure.

Once you’re down, get the airplane stopped and get everyone out and away from it - upwind and moving. Know where your fire extinguisher is if you carry one, and know how to unlatch your doors, because some doors can jam in a hard arrival. On airframes where it’s approved, popping a door open on short final is worth knowing about for your specific airplane. Read your book.

Three Things You Can Do This Week

1. Read the checklist out loud. Pull out your airplane’s emergency checklist and read the engine fire in flight section aloud, then read the electrical fire section so you know which smell goes with which. Do it on the ground with the engine off. Five minutes puts the memory items in your hands.

2. Practice a forward slip to a landing. Go up with an instructor if you haven’t done one in a while. The slip to a landing is an Airman Certification Standards task for a reason - it’s a genuine stick-and-rudder skill, and it’s the exact tool you’d reach for in a fire. Get comfortable being cross-controlled on purpose and feeling the airplane come down steeply and under control.

3. Play the field game every flight. Every few minutes in cruise, ask yourself where you’d go if the engine quit right now. Make it a habit so deep you don’t notice you’re doing it. That single habit does more for your engine fire survival than memorizing any checklist, because it means the hardest decision is already made when the moment comes.

The Mindset That Saves You

An engine fire is a low-probability, high-consequence event. You may fly your entire life and never see one - modern engines, good maintenance, and careful preflight make it rare. But rare is not never, and the cost of being unprepared is total.

In a fire, you are giving up the engine on purpose. Everything in you will resist that, because years of flying have taught you to protect and nurse that engine. In this one specific emergency, you have to be willing to reach up and shut it down deliberately and never look back. That decisiveness, decided in advance on a calm day, is what saves you: mixture, fuel, master - slip it, land it, get out.
