A diversion is the moment you abandon your carefully planned route and build a new one in seconds, in the air, while still flying the airplane. The hardest part is not the navigation or the math - it’s making the decision to divert in the first place. Use a simple four-step framework: fly the airplane first, pick a suitable airport and commit, turn then estimate your distance/time/fuel, and finally communicate.

Every pilot will face this eventually. Your destination closes the runway. The weather ahead deteriorates. A passenger falls ill. The engine runs rough. Whatever the cause, the plan you spent hours building the night before is no longer the right plan, and you need a new one now.

Why Is the Decision to Divert So Hard?

Pilots rarely get into trouble because they couldn’t do the arithmetic. They get into trouble because they kept going. They had a perfectly good airport twenty miles behind them and pressed on into worsening weather because turning around felt like failure.

That’s get-there-itis, one of aviation’s classic hazardous attitudes. The antidote is deciding - before you ever leave the ground - that diverting is not a failure. Airline crews divert. Corporate crews divert. It’s a normal, professional tool, and choosing to use it is you doing your job as pilot in command.

What Are the Four Steps of a Diversion?

Break the diversion into four steps and it stops being intimidating: maintain control, pick, turn and time, talk.

Step 1: Fly the Airplane First

When the examiner says “your destination is now closed, divert to the nearest suitable airport,” the temptation is to bury your head in the chart and start scribbling. Don’t. Maintain your heading and altitude, keep the airplane under control, and if terrain or weather is a factor, consider climbing for a better view and improved radio and radar coverage.

Aviate, then navigate, then communicate. That order never changes for your entire career.

Then buy yourself time with one small habit: the moment you realize you need to divert, note two things - the time and your current heading. Jot them on your kneeboard. You’ll want to know exactly when this new leg started, and your current heading gives you an anchor to work from.

Step 2: Pick a Suitable Airport - and Commit

Students freeze here because they think there’s a perfect answer and fear picking wrong. There usually isn’t a perfect answer. There’s a reasonable one. A suitable airport is one where you can answer yes to these questions:

  • Can I reach it with my fuel and keep my reserves intact? An airport you can’t reach is not an option.
  • Is the runway long enough, on a surface I’m comfortable with?
  • Does it have the services I need? Low on fuel means an airport that sells fuel. A sick passenger might mean a larger field near a town with an ambulance.
  • What’s the weather there, and what’s the terrain and airspace between me and it?

The nearest airport is not always the best airport. If the closest field is a 2,000-foot grass strip with no services sitting directly under the weather chasing you, and there’s a paved runway with fuel just eight miles farther in clear air, go to the paved one. Weigh both words: nearest suitable.

On the checkride, the examiner wants a sound, defensible choice you commit to - not the mathematically closest dot on the chart. A strong answer sounds like: “I’m diverting to this airport because it’s within my fuel range, it has a paved runway and fuel, it’s clear of this weather, and I have clear terrain the whole way.” That’s exactly what a pilot in command sounds like.

How Do I Estimate Heading, Distance, and Time Without a Perfect Plot?

You don’t need a perfect line and a precise course. You need a good-enough heading and a good-enough estimate right now, then refine as you go. Turn the airplane toward the field first, then do the math.

Measure Distance Using the Chart Itself

Lay a pencil, plotter, or even your thumb between your present position and the airport on the sectional. Most plotters have a nautical mile scale on the edge, but you don’t need one. Use the latitude marks as a built-in ruler: every degree of latitude is 60 nautical miles apart, and each minute tick equals 1 nautical mile. That scale is printed right on the chart, always available and never wrong.

Suppose you measure about 24 miles. Round it up and call it 25.

Get a Rough Heading

Lay your plotter along the path to read true course and apply local magnetic variation - or simply look at the picture. If the airport is off your right at about two o’clock and you’re heading 360, then a heading around 040–050 will point you at it. Turn to that, look outside, and confirm the airport (or a nearby town, lake, or highway) shows up where it should. That’s pilotage backing up your dead reckoning.

Run Time and Fuel - the Step That Keeps You Alive

Use the groundspeed you’ve already been tracking. Handy reference: 120 knots is exactly 2 miles per minute. At 100 knots, you cover 10 miles every 6 minutes - so 25 miles takes about 15 minutes.

Now the fuel. At a burn rate of 10 gallons per hour, 15 minutes is 2.5 gallons. Do you have that plus your reserves? Almost certainly - but you checked instead of assuming.

This estimate does something powerful: it confirms your decision. If the numbers show the field would eat into your reserve, you found out with altitude and options still in your pocket - not when the engine goes quiet.

When and How Do I Talk to ATC?

Communicate last. For most diversions - which are not emergencies - that means updating flight following: “Approach, Cessna One Two Three, we’d like to amend our destination; we’re now diverting to [airport] due to weather.” Then get the weather at your new field and set up for the tower or the common traffic frequency.

Know the regulation written for this moment: FAR 91.3 makes you, the pilot in command, the final authority for the operation of the aircraft, and in an in-flight emergency requiring immediate action it lets you deviate from any rule to the extent required to meet that emergency. You don’t need anyone’s permission to keep yourself safe.

If it is an emergency - a truly sick engine or smoke - talk differently. Use the word: “Mayday” or at least “Pan-pan.” Squawk 7700. Let the full weight of the system come help you. Controllers don’t give pilots a hard time for declaring - so don’t be too proud to do it.

What Does the Checkride Diversion Actually Look Like?

Cruising along nailing your checkpoints, the examiner says: “Weather at your destination just went below minimums. Where are you going to go?”

The nervous student grabs the chart, goes silent, and plots a precise line while the airplane wanders 100 feet off altitude and 10 degrees off heading. That’s the mistake.

The sharp applicant’s first words are: “I’m going to keep flying my heading and altitude while I sort this out.” That one sentence proves your priorities are right. Then they find a field and say why, make a rough turn toward it, and only then - with the airplane pointed correctly and trimmed - refine the heading and run time and fuel. And they narrate the whole time, because a checkride is you proving you can be trusted.

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) diversion task asks you to select a suitable airport, make a reasonable estimate of heading, groundspeed, arrival time, and fuel, and to divert promptly. That word is deliberate - the examiner wants to see you didn’t dither. Precision to the exact degree is not the standard; a safe, decisive pilot in command is.

How Can I Make Diversions Easy Before I Ever Take Off?

The best diversion is one you prepared for on the ground.

  1. Plan your outs. As you draw your route, note the airports sitting left and right of it. You don’t need a second nav log - just know your neighborhood.
  2. Know your groundspeed at all times. If you check it at every checkpoint, you’ll already have the number you need for time and fuel when the diversion comes.
  3. Keep your position known. If you can put your thumb on where you are this instant, a diversion is just a short new line from your thumb. Stay found - that’s the whole game in cross country flying.
  4. Decide early. The best time to divert is before you absolutely have to. When you first get that “this isn’t looking great” feeling, you have the most fuel, altitude, daylight, and options you’ll ever have. Every minute you wait trades one of those away. Turn while turning is cheap.
