What Is a Diversion, and Why Does It Feel So Hard?

When your instructor covers up your destination on a cross-country and says “the weather just went down, take me to your alternate,” it feels like a trick. Your brain locks up: Where am I? Which way do I turn? How far is it? Do I have the gas?

It isn’t a trick. It’s the most realistic thing your instructor will ever do to you. Out in the actual sky, the diversion isn’t a maneuver - it’s the whole job. Airplanes divert every single day because weather moves in, a destination drops below minimums, or an airport simply closes.

Diversions live in the cross-country section of the Airman Certification Standards (ACS), which means your examiner will make you do one on your checkride. The goal is to make it look boring. Boring means prepared.

How Do I Prepare for a Diversion Before I Take Off?

Decide the divert before you need it. Most pilots plan an alternate as a line on the chart and then never look at it again. That’s the mistake. Your alternate is a real airport you might actually land at today, so treat it like one.

Before you launch, know your alternate’s runways, pattern altitude, and frequency. Know roughly how far it is from your destination and in which direction. When the diversion comes, you don’t want to be reading fine print - you want to already know the shape of the place.

What Do I Do the Moment the Diversion Happens?

Fly the airplane first. The instant the destination gets taken away, watch what happens to most students: the nose wanders, the altitude drifts, and they go heads-down in the chart. The one thing they stop doing is flying the airplane.

So the first move isn’t a calculation - it’s a breath. Level the wings. Hold your altitude. Point the nose in the general direction of your alternate. You can refine it in a minute. Right now you just need the airplane pointed at the answer instead of wandering while you think.

In dense traffic this matters even more. When Oshkosh holds you out, you are not alone up there - airplanes are stacked around you doing the exact same math. Level, stabilize, and keep your eyes outside. The chart can wait three seconds; the traffic cannot.

How Do I Find the Heading to My Alternate Without a Calculator?

Turn toward it now, get the number later. You do not need a perfect heading to start the turn - you need a good-enough heading right now.

Look at your position, look at where the alternate is, and estimate the direction. Off the right wing? To the south? Behind you and to the left? You don’t need degrees yet, you need a direction. Turn that way immediately, and you’re already making progress while other pilots are still heads-down doing arithmetic. Every minute spent fussing with the exact heading is a minute flying the wrong way.

Then refine with a rule-of-thumb heading: lay your finger on the chart from your position to the alternate, compare that line to a line of longitude or to your known course line, and estimate the angle. You’re not after pinpoint accuracy - you’re after close enough to see the airport. Once you can see it, the heading stops mattering.

A moving map makes this easier, but be honest with yourself: the examiner wants to see you do it with a chart and your thumb, because someday the box will be dark and the airport will still need finding. The magenta line is a wonderful servant and a terrible master.

How Do I Know If I Have Enough Fuel to Divert?

Once you’re turned and tracking, you need two answers: how long until I get there, and do I have the gas to do it?

For time, use the field-expedient method: distance divided by groundspeed equals time. If your alternate is 30 nautical miles away and you’re making 120 knots over the ground, that’s a quarter of an hour - 15 minutes. You don’t need it to the second; you need it close enough to make a fuel decision.

And fuel is the decision. When you divert, you’re spending gas you didn’t plan to spend. The alternate might be closer than your destination - great, you’ve got margin. But it might be farther, or you might be sent into holding first, burning fuel while you go nowhere.

Run the number honestly: time to the alternate × fuel burn per hour = fuel required. Compare that to what’s actually in the tanks right now, not what you took off with. Then respect the reserve. Under the federal regulations, day VFR you must plan to land with at least 30 minutes of fuel at normal cruise; at night it’s 45 minutes. That reserve is not yours to spend. If diverting eats into it, you’re not diverting to that airport - you’re picking a closer one.

When and How Should I Communicate a Diversion?

Communicate last - and the order is the whole point. Aviate, navigate, communicate. You’ve flown the airplane, turned toward the alternate, and sorted your time and fuel. Now you tell somebody.

In normal cross-country flying, let the controller know you’re diverting and where. If you’re on flight following, this is where that service pays for itself: they can help you and, if things get tight, clear a path.

At Oshkosh, communication looks different, and you need to know this cold. The Fisk arrival is a listen-and-comply procedure - the controller talks, you rock your wings to acknowledge, and you do not key the mike. What Does a Well-Flown Diversion Actually Look Like?

Picture yourself inbound to the show. You crossed your en route checkpoints on time, you’re over Ripon on the railroad tracks toward Fisk, wings level, eyes outside. Then the word comes down: field’s holding, expect delay.

Nothing dramatic happens. Wings stay level, altitude holds, eyes stay outside on the traffic. Breathe. The decision was already made this morning over coffee: If I get held and my fuel gets tight, I’m going to Fond du Lac.

So you glance at the fuel and check the clock - how long can you hold before the reserve gets involved? If the hold is short and the gas is good, you wait your turn and get into the show. If the fuel math says the hold is eating reserves, there’s no agonizing: break off per the NOTAM, turn south, and there’s the alternate - already studied, already briefed, its runways and pattern already in memory. From the outside, completely calm. Almost boring.

The diversion feels like the emergency. It isn’t. The emergency is arriving somewhere you can’t land with no plan, no gas, and no idea which way to turn. The diversion is the thing that prevents the emergency. Practice it: next time you’re up, pick a random airport off to one side and divert to it. Turn first, get the rough heading, run the time, run the fuel, find the field. Do it until it’s a shrug instead of a scramble.
