The in-flight diversion is the checkride task where the examiner closes your destination mid-flight and expects you to choose a new airport, estimate a heading, distance, time, and fuel, and get moving - all while continuing to fly the airplane. Success is not about mathematical precision; it’s about following the right order: aviate, navigate, communicate. The examiner wants a pilot who flies the airplane first, makes a reasonable decision quickly, and then executes and monitors it.

What Is the Diversion Task on a Checkride?

Most cross-country training is spent on the plan - drawing the line on the chart, filling in the nav log, checking winds aloft, computing headings, groundspeed, and fuel burn leg by leg. That’s real work, and the examiner will want to see all of it.

But the whole point of learning to plan a cross-country is so you can throw the plan away when you have to. The plan assumes your destination is open, the weather holds, and the engine keeps running. The day the plan is wrong is exactly the day you need to be good at flying without it.

The FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS) contain a dedicated task called Diversion within the cross-country area of operation. The examiner is required to give it to you - it is not optional. Expect it to come when you’re relaxed and feeling good about the flight.

What Is the Examiner Actually Looking For?

The examiner is looking for a pilot who flies the airplane first, makes a reasonable decision quickly, then executes and monitors it. That’s the whole game.

They are not looking for the mathematically perfect heading or a groundspeed nailed to the tenth of a knot. They are looking for a safe, timely, and sensible diversion. What fails people isn’t bad arithmetic - it’s the head going down and staying down while the airplane wanders.

How Do I Handle a Diversion Step by Step?

Step 1: Fly the Airplane First

Before you touch a chart, touch your phone, or say a single word, fly the airplane. Pick a heading in the general direction you think you want to go and turn to it right now. You don’t need the exact heading yet - you need to be pointed roughly the right way while your brain catches up.

The classic student mistake: the examiner says “divert,” and the student’s head drops into the cockpit to fold charts, punch the GPS, and do math - while the airplane quietly starts a descending turn toward the ground. A perfectly good pilot can lose 200 feet and 15 degrees of heading solving a problem that wasn’t going to solve itself in the next 30 seconds.

Turn toward the general area of your new airport, level the wings, trim for level flight, and get your eyes back outside. The problem can wait 90 seconds. The airplane cannot.

Step 2: Pick Your Airport

This is where pre-flight thinking pays off. When you plan your cross-country, get familiar with what’s along your route - the towered field to the south, the grass strip to the north, the long county airport halfway. You don’t memorize them; you just know they’re there, so you’re not seeing the chart for the first time when the examiner pulls the rug out.

When choosing, think fast about a few things:

  • How close is it?
  • What direction is it, relative to where you’re already pointed? Turning back the way you came burns time and fuel and looks bad.
  • What kind of airport is it? Do you have the fuel, runway, and daylight to make it work?
  • What’s the weather doing there? Diverting from bad weather into more bad weather isn’t a diversion - it’s a delay.

Closest is not always best. The nearest-airport button on your GPS will happily send you to a 2,000-foot strip with a crosswind and no fuel when there’s a 5,000-foot runway with an operating FBO ten miles further on. The machine doesn’t know the difference. You do.

Step 3: Estimate Heading, Distance, Time, and Fuel

Now - and only now - work out the details, by eye and by thumb.

Heading. Find your present position and your new airport on the chart, and lay something straight between them - a finger, a pencil, the edge of your plotter. You’re looking for direction, not a protractor reading. Roughly northeast? Turn to about 030 and fine-tune visually against landmarks as you go. Your chart is oriented to true north while your compass is magnetic, so account for local variation - but don’t paralyze yourself with the math. Point the airplane the right way and refine.

Distance. Use the chart’s tick marks or the width of your fingers against the latitude scale, or just glance at your nav log - you already know roughly where you are along your planned route. If the new airport is about 30 nautical miles away, round it. Thirty. Don’t chase precision you don’t need.

Time. This is distance divided by groundspeed, done in your head:

  • At 120 knots, you cover 2 miles per minute, so 30 miles is about 15 minutes.
  • At 90 knots, you cover 1.5 miles per minute, so 30 miles is about 20 minutes.

You already have your groundspeed - you computed it in cruise and have been checking it. This is the payoff for all that planning.

Fuel. Time times fuel burn. Burning 8 gallons per hour on a 15-minute leg is about 2 gallons to get there. Then ask the real question: not “can I make it,” but “will I land with my required reserves plus a comfortable pad?” Under 14 CFR 91.151, day VFR requires you to plan to arrive with at least 30 minutes of fuel at normal cruise; at night it’s 45 minutes. Thirty minutes is a legal floor, not a personal goal. If a diversion leaves you sniffing the bottom of the tanks at exactly the legal reserve, pick a closer airport. Fuel is the one thing you cannot negotiate with.

Step 4: Communicate

The step everybody forgets: tell somebody. If you have flight following - which on a cross-country you really ought to - key the mic and say, in plain, calm English, that you’re diverting:

“Approach, Skyhawk such-and-such is diverting to [airport] due to weather at our destination, requesting the current altimeter and any traffic.”

ATC isn’t grading your radio poetry. They want to know where you’re going so they can keep everyone apart and help if you need it. If you’re not talking to anyone, at a minimum get the weather at your new field, set up for the arrival, and keep flying the airplane.

What Does a Good Diversion Look Like in Practice?

Picture a Cessna 172, northbound on the second leg of a cross-country, cruising at about 110 knots groundspeed, 40 miles south of your planned destination. Everything is beautiful. Then the examiner says: “Airport’s reporting a broken layer at 800 and visibility dropping. We’re not getting in there. Divert.”

The good pilot’s hands answer before their mouth does. Wings level, verify altitude, trim it - done. The airplane is stable.

Now the head comes down for a moment. There’s a towered field about 25 miles to the northeast, a 5,000-foot runway, fuel, and it’s on the sunny side of the weather. Finger on the chart: the heading looks like about 040. Turn to 040, eyes back outside, pick a landmark on the nose, refine.

Then the math, out loud - saying it aloud keeps you honest and shows the examiner your brain is working: “Twenty-five miles. Groundspeed about 120 this direction, call it 2 miles a minute, so roughly 12 to 13 minutes. Fuel burn 8 gallons an hour, about 2 gallons for the leg, and I’ve got an hour and a half in the tanks - reserves are no problem. I’m going there.”

Then key the mic, tell ATC, set up for the arrival, and keep flying the airplane.

Why This Matters Beyond the Checkride

The diversion is not a math test, even though it feels like one when you’re terrified of getting the heading wrong by ten degrees. Ten degrees over 25 miles is nothing you can’t see and fix out the window. What actually hurts pilots in the real world is the head going down and staying down, fixating on the chart while the airplane wanders, picking an airport that’s too small or too far or downwind of the exact weather you’re running from, and treating the fuel reserve as a plan instead of a floor.

Practice it. Next time you’re up with your instructor on a cross-country, have them close your destination without warning - with the GPS off or the nearest-airport page hidden, so you have to use the chart, your thumb, and your head. Do it until it stops feeling like an ambush and starts feeling like just another thing you know how to do. The goal isn’t to pass the task; it’s that on some gray afternoon years from now, your hands are already turning the airplane before your brain has finished being surprised.
