Why Do Pilots Need to Divert?

Weather is the most obvious trigger, but it’s far from the only one. Fuel is likely the second most common cause: winds aloft come in stronger than forecast, groundspeed drops, and a destination that looked comfortable on the ground starts looking marginal in the air. Mechanical concerns - an oil temperature climbing, a cylinder head temp nudging its limit, an alternator slowly draining the battery - are all legitimate reasons to put the airplane down sooner than planned.

Personal factors matter too. Passenger discomfort, sustained turbulence, and pilot fatigue aren’t glamorous reasons to divert, but they’re real ones. Weather is the wildcard: ceilings forecast broken can become solid overcast, eight-mile visibility can drop to three, and a convective SIGMET (Significant Meteorological Information) can appear between you and your destination. By the time a divert decision is necessary, you’ve already committed to a destination. You told your passengers. You calculated fuel to that airport. You’ve been visualizing that runway for an hour. Changing mid-flight feels like failure - like poor planning, like disappointing someone.

None of that is true. Recognizing when the situation has changed and adapting accordingly is not a failure of planning. It is the whole point of pilot-in-command authority. The plan you filed was based on the information available at departure. When the information changes, the plan should too.

How Do You Decide When to Divert? The Can-Where-How Framework

Can - Can you still reach your planned destination safely? Not probably. Not if the weather holds. Safely - with adequate fuel, acceptable weather, and a usable runway. If the answer is a clear yes, continue. Any hesitation moves you to step two.

Where - Where are your options? This is where option awareness pays off. Every ten minutes during a cross-country, ask yourself: if I had to land right now, where would I go? You’re not committing to anything - you’re keeping your options visible. When a real divert decision arrives, you already have candidates in mind instead of frantically scrolling a moving map under stress.

How - How do you get there? This is the navigation piece. The mechanics below are what bridge the gap between a simulated divert at 4,000 feet on a clear afternoon and the real thing in deteriorating conditions at 2,500 feet with 30 minutes of fuel showing.

How Do You Check Fuel, Runway, and Weather for a Divert Airport?

Once you’ve selected a divert airport, run three quick checks in order: Fuel, Runway, Weather.

Fuel first. Do you have enough to reach the airport, land, and retain the legal reserve? For VFR flight, that’s 30 minutes during the day, 45 minutes at night. Treat the legal reserve as the floor, not the target - arriving with exactly 30 minutes of fuel leaves no margin. Fast mental math: divide the distance to the divert airport by your groundspeed to get time en route, multiply by fuel burn rate, add your legal reserve, and compare to what’s on board.

Runway second. Is the runway long enough for your aircraft? Does it have lighting if you might arrive near sunset? Is it open? Check for any NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) closing or restricting access. If current information isn’t available in the cockpit, err toward airports you know have adequate runway length.

Weather third. Is the weather between you and the divert airport flyable? Is the divert actually better than your destination, or are you trading one problem for another? This is especially important when diverting for weather - confirm you’re not heading toward a closed-in area on the other side of a convective line.

What Do You Say to ATC When Diverting?

If you’re already on flight following, the call is straightforward: “Traffic, November seven-two-three-eight-Foxtrot, we’re diverting to [airport name], request direct.” Controllers handle diversions routinely. They will confirm your transponder code and help with routing.

If you’re not on flight following, this is a good time to pick it up. Center frequencies are printed on your sectional chart. You can also reach Flight Service on 122.2 - give your position, aircraft identification, and intentions.

If the situation has escalated beyond a routine divert, declare an emergency. Say “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday” followed by your aircraft identifier, position, altitude, nature of the emergency, and intentions. Squawk 7700 on the transponder if time permits - but communicate first, squawk second.

Should You Declare an Emergency or Use Pan-Pan?

Many pilots - students and certificated alike - avoid the word “Mayday” out of concern about paperwork or looking dramatic. The FAA does not penalize pilots for declaring emergencies in good faith. The priority separation you receive when you declare is real protection.

“Pan-Pan, Pan-Pan, Pan-Pan” is the step below a full emergency declaration. It signals urgency without the emergency structure - appropriate when the situation is serious but not immediately life-threatening: an engine running rough but still producing power, a lost electrical system with the aircraft otherwise flying normally. How Do You Fly Into an Unfamiliar Airport?

Once you’re in range - typically within 15 miles - pick up the AWOS (Automated Weather Observing System). You need four things: altimeter setting, wind, ceiling and visibility, and the active runway. These tell you how to enter the pattern and whether the airport is actually usable on arrival.

If you can’t raise weather, try reaching the FBO (Fixed Base Operator) on the CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency). Some smaller airports have a staffed FBO with a radio who can provide local conditions.

The Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards (ACS) addresses divert in the navigation section. The standard requires you to recognize the need to divert, select an appropriate alternate airport, and make an accurate estimate of heading, groundspeed, time, and fuel to the alternate - then fly an appropriate flight path to that airport while maintaining control of the aircraft.

The examiner is watching whether you can recognize a changing situation, make a rational decision under mild pressure, communicate it, and execute without losing track of the airplane. The navigation is usually fine. Where students lose points is going head-down into the moving map and letting the aircraft drift off altitude and heading.

Practice the divert with your head mostly outside. Use clock and compass for the first couple of minutes to get oriented, take a quick look inside to confirm nav, then back outside.
