The “impossible turn” - turning back to the runway after your engine fails on climb-out - is the single most argued-about emergency in light aviation, and it has killed skilled, high-time pilots. The core rule is simple: decide your minimum turnback altitude on the ground before takeoff, and below that number, land more or less straight ahead. The engine failure is usually survivable; it’s the low-altitude, uncoordinated turn back to the field that kills people through a stall-spin.

What Is the Impossible Turn?

The impossible turn goes by several names: the turnback, the teardrop return, or the more polite return-to-field maneuver. The situation is always the same. You firewall the throttle, rotate, and climb out over the departure end - and somewhere in that climb, the engine loses power. Total failure or partial, it doesn’t change the decision you’re about to make.

Suddenly the most valuable real estate in the world is the runway you just left, and it’s directly behind you.

Here’s the trap. Your brain wants that runway. It’s paved, long, and familiar - you were just there. Every instinct says turn around and go back to the safe place. That instinct is exactly what wraps airplanes around trees off the departure end of general aviation airports every year.

Why Is Turning Back So Dangerous?

When you turn back, you aren’t doing one simple thing. You’re doing four hard things at once, all while the ground rises to meet you:

  1. Lower the nose immediately to hold glide speed, because you just lost thrust and the airplane wants to slow down and stall.
  2. Bank the airplane - and a steep bank raises your stall speed and increases your descent rate.
  3. Turn roughly 270 degrees, not 180. When you finish that first half-turn you’re off to the side of the runway, pointed diagonally, so you need a correction turn back the other way to line up.
  4. Land downwind, with a tailwind pushing your groundspeed up and eating your remaining runway.

The airplane does not know it’s over an airport. Aerodynamics doesn’t care that the runway is right there. A steep, uncoordinated turn at low altitude with no power is a stall-spin waiting to happen, and a stall-spin at 300 feet is not survivable. The airplane rolls, the nose drops, and you don’t have the altitude to recover.

That is the accident - not the engine failure. The engine failure is survivable. The turn is what kills people.

How Do I Set My Personal Turnback Altitude?

Before you ever take the runway, you need to have decided on a specific altitude below which you will not turn back. Period. The debate happens on the ground, in the run-up area - not at 300 feet.

For many trainers, that number lands somewhere between 500 and 1,000 feet above the ground, but it depends on your specific airplane, weight, wind, density altitude, and how sharp you are that day. There is no single magic number that works for every airplane on every runway. Anyone who gives you one flat number for all of aviation is selling you something.

Here’s how to find yours this week, with an instructor:

  1. Take the airplane up to a safe altitude - a few thousand feet.
  2. Set up a climb at your normal climb power and pitch.
  3. Pull the throttle to idle to simulate the failure.
  4. Lower the nose to best glide, roll into about a 45-degree bank, and time how much altitude you lose to complete a 180-degree turn.
  5. Add margin for the realignment turn, and add more margin for the fact that up high - relaxed and expecting it - you’ll do it far better than you will down low with your heart in your throat.

Round that total up. That is your personal turnback altitude for that airplane. Write it down and brief it out loud before every takeoff: “If the engine quits below [my number], I am landing straight ahead, and I am accepting the crash.” Say those words. The decision has to already be made when the fan stops, because you won’t have time to make it fresh.

What Do I Do Below My Turnback Altitude?

Below your number, you land more or less straight ahead. You pick the best available option in a cone in front of you - a field, a road, a gap in the trees - whatever gives you the flattest, softest arrival.

Keep the wings level. Keep flying the airplane all the way to the ground. Touch down under control at the slowest safe speed. A controlled crash into trees at the bottom of a wings-level glide is a walk-away accident far more often than people think. The airplane is replaceable. You are not.

How Do I Fly the Turn Correctly Above My Number?

Above your number - with real altitude, over a long runway, in light winds, in an airplane you know cold - a turn back can absolutely be the right call. Airline transport and test pilots have studied this maneuver for decades, and the physics work out when you have the altitude and fly it precisely.

Here’s how to fly it:

  • Pitch for best glide first. The instant the engine fails, get the nose down and lock in the speed. Don’t think about the turn yet - airspeed is life. Fly the airplane first.
  • Then roll into a coordinated turn. Step on the ball and keep it centered. Most turnback stall-spins happen because the pilot skids the turn, trying to rush the nose around with rudder. A skidding stall at low altitude drops a wing into a spin faster than you can blink.
  • Use about a 45-degree bank. This is counterintuitive: a shallow bank feels safer, but it makes the turn take longer and costs more altitude over the ground. A steeper bank near 45 degrees completes the turn in less altitude lost - as long as you keep the speed up and the ball centered. The safe-feeling shallow turn is often the more dangerous one.
  • Account for the wind. If you took off into the wind, turning back means landing with a tailwind. Your groundspeed on touchdown is higher and your landing distance is longer. The wind that helped you climb will hurt you on the way back down.

A Real Scenario: The Same Airport, Two Different Answers

You’re departing a 5,000-foot runway on a calm morning in a light airplane, just you on board. On the ground, you brief it: “Anything below 800 feet, I’m landing straight ahead into that bean field. Above 800, I’ll consider the turn back.”

Engine quits at 400 feet. You’re below your number, so there’s no debate. Your hand is already moving: nose down to best glide, pick your spot in the cone ahead, wings level, quick checks if you have a spare second, and you fly it down into the field under control. Maybe you bend the airplane, maybe you don’t - but you walk away.

That’s the only thing on the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) that actually matters. The ACS lists emergency approach and landing as a required area of operation for exactly this reason. The examiner wants you to establish best glide immediately, pick a suitable landing area, and fly a controlled approach - not to pull off a hero turn.

Now run the same scenario, but the engine quits at 1,000 feet. You’re above your number, so the turn is on the table. You pitch for glide first, commit to a coordinated 45-degree bank, fly it around, accept the tailwind landing, and put it back on the pavement. Same airplane, same airport - and the extra 600 feet completely changed the correct answer.

The pilots who get hurt are almost never the ones who planned it. They’re the ones who improvised at 300 feet because the runway looked so close.

Make it a habit so ingrained that you don’t have to think when the day comes - because if it comes, thinking is the one thing you won’t have time to do. A few minutes of practice up high and thirty seconds of briefing on the ground is the cheapest life insurance in all of aviation.
