The most dangerous moment after an engine failure on takeoff is not the failure itself - it’s the decision to turn back to the runway. The turnback, or “impossible turn,” causes fatal stall-spin accidents because pilots attempt a low, slow, steep turn that their airplane and altitude can’t support. The solution is to make your decision on the ground, before every takeoff, and commit to it: below a briefed altitude, you land straight ahead; above it, you may consider a return.

What Is the Impossible Turn?

The impossible turn is the attempt to turn back to the departure runway after an engine failure shortly after liftoff. You’ve rotated, you’re climbing through 200 to 300 feet, and the engine coughs, surges, or simply quits. The runway is right behind you - long, paved, and familiar - and every instinct screams to turn around and go get it.

That instinct is what kills people. The engine failure is usually survivable. The turn often is not.

Why Is the Turnback So Deadly?

Turning back looks easy and is brutally hard. To land back on the runway you just departed, you don’t make a simple 180-degree turn. You departed straight ahead, so the runway ends up behind you and off to one side. Getting realigned to land the opposite direction requires roughly a 270-degree turn total - most of a full circle, flown low, slow, and with a dead engine.

Here’s the trap. When you bank to make that turn, your wing’s lift is no longer working entirely to hold you up - part of it is pulling you sideways through the turn. To keep from descending faster, the natural tendency is to pull back on the yoke. Pulling back in a steep bank at low airspeed leads straight to an accelerated stall.

An accelerated stall, in a bank, close to the ground, with the nose coming up, is a spin entry. At that altitude, there is no room to recover. The airplane strikes the ground nose-low and banked, off the airport, and it is almost always fatal.

What Should You Do the Instant the Engine Quits?

Lower the nose. Immediately. On climbout you’re slow - you rotated around 60 knots and you’re climbing at best rate, maybe 70-something knots in a typical trainer. You’re nose-high, draggy, and close to the ground. When power disappears, the nose wants to keep pointing skyward while your airspeed bleeds toward a stall.

Trade that hard-won altitude back into airspeed, because airspeed is the only thing keeping your wing flying. Pitch for best glide speed and hold it.

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) require you to establish and maintain the recommended best glide airspeed within plus or minus 10 knots during a power-off emergency. Best glide isn’t just a number on a card - it’s the speed that buys you the most distance and the most time to think. Get the nose down and get to best glide. That’s step one, and it never changes.

How Do You Decide Whether to Turn Back?

There is an altitude below which the turnback is off the table and above which it might be an option - if you’ve practiced it, know your airplane, and conditions are right. For many light trainers that number lives around 500 feet above the ground, though plenty of good instructors want 800 to 1,000 feet before they’d even consider it. It depends on your airplane, weight, wind, density altitude, and how sharp your turn is.

But that altitude isn’t something you can reliably judge in the heat of the moment. So do something simpler and more powerful: brief it out loud before every takeoff.

Your brief should sound something like this:

  • Engine failure on the runway: throttle idle, brakes, stop straight ahead.
  • Engine failure after liftoff with runway remaining: land on the runway.
  • Engine failure below my briefed altitude: land straight ahead, within about 30 degrees left or right, and fly it all the way to the ground.
  • Engine failure above my briefed altitude: consider the turnback.

You pick that altitude on the ground - for that runway, that day, that airplane - and commit to it. The whole point is that you’ve already decided before your heart rate spikes and your hands start shaking. At 300 feet you’re not deciding; you’re executing.

How Do You Survive Landing Straight Ahead?

Landing straight ahead means putting the airplane into terrain you didn’t choose - a field, a road, trees, whatever lies off the departure end. It’s frightening and it will bend metal. But a controlled arrival - wings level, under control, at the slowest safe speed - into rough terrain is survivable. People walk away from that all the time. Nobody walks away from a spin.

“Fly the airplane as far into the crash as you can” is old, grim wisdom, and it’s exactly right. Wings level. Nose on the horizon. Slow it down in the flare. Let the airframe, the seatbelt, and the structure absorb the energy. Your only job is to arrive under control.

What Are the Memory Items for Engine Failure?

Many pilots use the A-B-C-D-E flow for an engine failure, and it works on climbout once the nose is down:

  • A – Airspeed: best glide, first and always.
  • B – Best field: or, in this case, the straight-ahead spot you already briefed.
  • C – Checklist: the quick flow - fuel selector to the fullest tank, mixture rich, fuel pump on, carb heat on, magnetos on both. This takes about three seconds and catches the failures that are actually fixable, like a dry tank or carb ice.
  • D – Declare: if you have altitude and a free hand, squawk 7700 and call mayday on the frequency you’re already using.
  • E – Exits and equipment: fuel off, master off before touchdown if time allows, doors cracked, harnesses tight.

Notice the order. Airspeed comes before everything. Never bury your head in the cockpit chasing a checklist while the airspeed bleeds away. Fly first, troubleshoot second - always in that order.

Why Does This Matter More in Busy Departure Environments?

Don’t let the crowd, the radios, and the pressure talk you out of your brief. If anything, brief it harder. Know your straight-ahead option and your altitude - and recognize that your straight-ahead choices at an unfamiliar field might not be pretty.

That’s why real cross-country planning includes studying the chart and satellite view of what lies off the departure end before you ever taxi out - not just the route and the fuel.
