Engine failure after takeoff is one of the most consistently fatal scenarios in general aviation - not because survival is impossible, but because most pilots make the critical decision at the worst possible moment, under maximum stress, with minimum altitude. A deliberate pre-takeoff emergency brief, completed before every departure, is the single habit most likely to change that outcome.

What Is the Impossible Turn?

When an engine fails shortly after liftoff, nearly every pilot’s instinct is to turn back toward the runway they just left. It’s visible, it’s long, and it’s the last safe surface they touched. This instinct is understandable - and often fatal.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has investigated hundreds of these accidents over decades. The pattern is consistent: the pilot rolls into a bank, the aircraft stalls or spirals, and the outcome is catastrophic. Most pilots who attempt the turn back after engine failure on departure do not survive it. The ones who do survive were typically higher than they thought they were.

Why Does the Instinct to Turn Back Feel So Right?

The brain under stress seeks the known, safe surface. The runway is pavement, it’s familiar, and it appears close. But low-altitude perspective is distorted - what looks like a quarter mile may be a full mile away, and what feels like a shallow turn is going to cost altitude you don’t have.

This is the core problem: the decision cannot be made reliably in the moment. An under-stress brain is optimistic about the runway and pessimistic about the field ahead. How Does Bank Angle Kill Pilots in the Turn?

Bank angle and stall speed are directly linked. When an aircraft rolls into a bank, lift is redirected - some holds the aircraft up, some pulls it into the turn. To maintain altitude, the pilot must increase angle of attack, which raises stall speed.

In a Cessna 172 at a standard sea-level airport, the typical climb rate is 600–700 feet per minute. Reaching 1,000 feet AGL takes roughly 90 seconds to two minutes. Most engine failures on departure happen in the first 30 seconds of flight - well below that threshold.

What Is the Pre-Takeoff Emergency Brief?

The pre-takeoff emergency brief is a deliberate, 15-second mental rehearsal completed before lining up on every runway. It replaces in-the-moment decision-making with a pre-made plan.

Before entering the runway, identify:

  • What is straight ahead? (field, road, neighborhood, parking lot - that is your landing zone for the first several hundred feet)
  • What is within roughly 30° left or right that might be better?
  • What is your altitude threshold for considering a turn back?

A complete brief sounds like this:

  • Engine failure before rotation: Abort. Full brakes. Get it stopped.
  • Engine failure after rotation below 500 feet AGL: Land straight ahead. No turns greater than 30° except to avoid a hard obstacle.
  • Engine failure between 500 and 1,000 feet AGL: Evaluate. Land ahead unless terrain is genuinely unacceptable and the runway is clearly achievable.
  • Engine failure above 1,000 feet AGL, with safe terrain behind and geometry working: Consider the turn back. Shallow bank. Know the escape route if the altitude isn’t there.

1,000 feet AGL is a minimum, not a guarantee. Know your specific aircraft’s best glide speed and glide ratio. Brief accordingly, every time.

What Do You Actually Do When the Engine Quits?

If altitude is below 1,000 feet AGL - which covers most departure engine failures - the sequence is: best glide, look ahead, declare, checklist, secure.

1. Best glide speed. Immediately. In the Cessna 172, that is 68 knots. The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for the private pilot certificate require knowledge of this number - know it before you need it. Not best rate of climb, not the speed you were at. Best glide.

2. Look ahead. The aircraft is going forward. Choose the best available landing surface in front of you: a straight road, an open field, a flat parking lot. You are not finding the perfect spot - you are finding the best available option in the next 30 seconds.

3. Declare. If there is a moment to spare: “Mayday, mayday, mayday, [call sign], engine failure departing runway [number], landing ahead.” Set the transponder to 7700 if time allows. If time does not allow, fly the airplane first.

4. Run the engine failure checklist. This step is skipped more often than it should be. Engines don’t always fail - sometimes a fuel selector is on the wrong tank, a primer isn’t seated, or carburetor ice formed in the transition from runup to climb power. Mixture rich, fuel selector both, carburetor heat on, primer in and locked, ignition both. The NTSB has documented accidents where a restart was available and the pilot never attempted it because they were already in the turn.

5. Secure the airplane before touchdown. Fuel selector off. Ignition off. Master off at the last moment before impact (to retain instruments through the approach). Unlatch doors before touchdown. Touch down at the slowest possible speed, into the wind if possible, aimed at the softest available surface.

When Is the Turn Back Actually the Right Call?

The impossible turn is not always impossible. With sufficient altitude, the right aircraft performance, and disciplined technique, it can be executed - but only when the numbers genuinely work.

If altitude is at or above 1,000 feet AGL and the terrain ahead is genuinely poor, the turn back may be the correct decision. Execute it this way:

  • 30° of bank. Not 45°, not 60°. It will feel slow. Hold it anyway. That bank angle preserves stall margin and keeps options open if the altitude isn’t there.
  • Turn into the headwind component. If the departure was into a north wind, turn back into the north wind. Headwind reduces ground speed and shortens the stopping distance required.
  • Do not stretch the glide. Whatever pavement is reachable, fly to it at best glide speed. Landing halfway down the runway at the correct speed is a far better outcome than a stall 50 feet short of the threshold.

What Does the Checkride Evaluate?

Engine failure after takeoff will appear on the private pilot checkride. The examiner is evaluating several specific things:

  • Best glide speed established and maintained within ±10 knots
  • A suitable landing area selected with a planned approach to it
  • The engine failure checklist completed
  • A verbal narration of decisions and reasoning

What the ACS is actually assessing is whether the pilot has built the mental habit of thinking through emergencies before they happen - so that the real emergency is not also the first time they’ve worked through the problem.
