Sydney Camm’s fabric-covered, workmanlike fighter was the aircraft that actually saved Britain in 1940 - and it has spent the past eight decades being treated as a footnote to its more photogenic stablemate.

Sydney Camm: The Carpenter’s Son Who Designed Britain’s Salvation

Sydney Camm was born in Windsor in 1893, the son of a carpenter. He built model gliders as a boy, talked his way into a position at Martinsyde aircraft company during the First World War, and worked up from the shop floor. By 1925, at age 32, he was chief designer at Hawker Aircraft Limited.

Camm was relentlessly practical. Colleagues described him as exacting to the point of difficult - not interested in theories about what might eventually work, only in what worked now, with available materials and available tools.

In 1934, while the Royal Air Force was still flying biplanes like the Hawker Fury and Bristol Bulldog at top speeds around 200 mph, Camm approached the Air Ministry with a monoplane fighter proposal. They expressed interest. Camm went back to his drawing boards and built it anyway.

November 6, 1935: The First Flight

The Hurricane prototype first flew on November 6, 1935, with George Bulman at the controls. Bulman was Hawker’s chief test pilot - a man who had flown everything and feared almost nothing. He landed that afternoon and told Camm it was a magnificent aeroplane.

Test pilots catalog problems. Their job is to find failures before production pilots encounter them at twenty thousand feet over a combat zone. When Bulman called it magnificent, it meant something.

Why Fabric Beat Metal in Combat

The Hurricane’s fuselage was a steel tube structure covered with fabric. The inner wing sections were metal; the outer panels were fabric-covered. By the mid-1930s, this was an older approach. Reginald Mitchell’s Spitfire used stressed-skin aluminum construction throughout. The Spitfire was the future, and everyone knew it.

What no one had tested was how these two philosophies would perform under cannon fire.

Bullets and shells go through fabric. They make holes - sometimes large ones. But the steel tube frame underneath absorbs enormous punishment before the aircraft becomes genuinely uncontrollable. Stressed-skin aluminum, when penetrated by cannon fire, can suffer progressive structural failure: holes become stress risers, stress risers become cracks, and cracks propagate rapidly under combat loads.

Hurricanes returned from combat with fabric hanging off the fuselage in strips, gaping holes in the outer wing panels, gaps in the tail surfaces large enough to look through. And they flew. Ground crews patched fabric sections in hours and returned those aircraft to service. In a battle of attrition where the number of serviceable fighters available each morning was the decisive variable, this mattered more than any performance specification.

The Battle of Britain: The Numbers History Buries

The Battle of Britain ran officially from July 10 to October 31, 1940. Hermann Göring told Adolf Hitler it would take four days to destroy Fighter Command. The Luftwaffe had numerical superiority, combat-hardened pilots from the Spanish Civil War and the blitzkrieg campaigns, and a systematic strategic doctrine - Adlerangriff (Eagle Attack) - designed to eliminate British airfields, radar stations, and aircraft production.

Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding commanded Fighter Command. He understood the attrition mathematics precisely: German escort fighters had limited fuel time over England; British pilots who bailed out could fly again tomorrow; German pilots who bailed out over England were prisoners. He fought accordingly.

At the start of the battle, Fighter Command had roughly 900 operational aircraft - approximately 540 Hurricanes and 290 Spitfires. The tactical doctrine sent Spitfires against the Messerschmitt 109 escorts at altitude, where the Spitfire’s speed and maneuverability provided an advantage. Hurricanes broke through to the bomber formations.

The logic was sound. The Hurricane, somewhat slower than the Spitfire but exceptionally stable as a gun platform, put an enormous volume of fire from its eight Browning .303 machine guns - harmonized at around 250 yards - into the lightly protected Heinkel 111 and Dornier 17 airframes. The results bore out the doctrine.

303 Squadron: The Polish Unit That Led the Fight

303 Squadron was a Polish fighter unit flying Hurricanes for the Royal Air Force. These were pilots who had escaped after Germany invaded Poland from the west and the Soviet Union from the east in September 1939 - men who had already been at war, many with years of combat experience. Getting from Poland to Britain required routing through Romania, Hungary, France, North Africa, or whatever geography was available.

When they arrived in Britain in 1940, some RAF leadership was uncertain what to make of them. Language was a barrier. Procedures differed. The Polish pilots’ approach to combat flying deviated from formal tactical doctrine.

Their approach was, broadly: get close and kill it.

303 Squadron became operational in August 1940. By the end of the battle in October, they were the top-scoring fighter squadron in all of Fighter Command - more aerial victories than any RAF squadron.

One of their attached pilots, a Czech named Josef František, finished the battle with 17 confirmed kills - the highest individual total of any Allied pilot in the entire Battle of Britain. František flew outside formal squadron formations for much of the battle, ranging independently after targets in a manner that would have drawn discipline in peacetime. In the summer of 1940, it removed German aircraft from the sky.

František was killed in a training accident in October 1940, right as the battle was winding down. He never knew the final count.

The Big Wing Controversy and the Men Who Were Punished for Winning

Air Vice-Marshal Keith Park commanded 11 Group, covering southern England and London. Air Vice-Marshal Trafford Leigh-Mallory commanded 12 Group to the north. Park scrambled quickly and intercepted Luftwaffe formations early, even at numerical disadvantage. Leigh-Mallory believed in assembling large wing formations of three to five squadrons before engaging.

The problem with the large wing concept was time. By the time five squadrons could form up and fly south, German bombers were already over their targets. Park was sending small Hurricane forces into formations many times their size - taking losses, but getting there in time to matter.

The dispute escalated to Dowding and ultimately contributed to a decision that history has not forgiven. In November 1940, both Park and Dowding were relieved of their commands by colleagues who disagreed with how they had won the battle. The architects of Britain’s survival were pushed out of their jobs weeks after achieving it.

Park and Dowding are now recognized as the decisive commanders of the victory. They didn’t get to enjoy that recognition at the time.

The Hurricane’s Global War

The Hurricane kept fighting long after the Battle of Britain ended.

In North Africa, the Mark IID variant was fitted with two 40mm Vickers anti-tank cannon - one under each wing - and turned loose against Rommel’s Afrika Korps. Tank-busting missions meant low, slow gun runs against armored targets that were returning fire with every anti-aircraft weapon available. The slow rate of fire required pilots to hold their aim at close range while absorbing ground fire.

In Malta, the besieged island in the Mediterranean absorbed sustained Axis air attacks throughout 1941, defended largely by Hurricanes before Spitfires arrived to share the burden. Pilots flew exhausted, sometimes malnourished, from cratered airfields in damaged aircraft. They held the island.

In Burma, the Hurricane faced experienced Japanese air forces in monsoon conditions and from jungle strips, where logistics made everything harder. The aircraft’s ruggedness made it the right tool for that theater.

The Soviet Union received nearly 3,000 Hurricanes through the Arctic convoys - brutal supply runs past Norway to Murmansk and Archangel. Soviet opinion was mixed: some pilots found it slower than their Yak fighters; others valued its durability and volume of fire. On the Eastern Front, where casualty figures defy comprehension, a fighter that survived battle damage and came home was worth more than performance numbers alone could express.

By the end of production in 1944, Hawker had built 14,533 Hurricanes, in over 100 variants, serving with at least 17 nations across Europe, North Africa, the Mediterranean, Burma, and the Eastern Front.

Sydney Camm’s Continuing Legacy

Camm didn’t stop with the Hurricane. He went on to design the Hawker Hunter, the swept-wing jet fighter that became one of the defining aircraft of the Cold War era. Then the Hawker Siddeley Harrier - the vertical takeoff and landing jet that transformed naval aviation in ways still felt today.

That legacy began at Brooklands in November 1935, when George Bulman stepped out of a prototype and called it magnificent.

Where to See a Flying Hurricane Today

Flying Hurricanes are rare. The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Ontario operates one. The Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight keeps one airworthy alongside Spitfires and an Avro Lancaster. The Imperial War Museum at Duxford has several examples.

The Hurricane runs the same Rolls-Royce Merlin as the Spitfire - 12 cylinders, liquid-cooled, supercharged, producing over 1,000 horsepower in Battle of Britain specification. If you hear one overhead, the sound is identical to a Spitfire. The aircraft is different. The job it did was different.

Dowding himself called it the workhorse and backbone of Fighter Command. He meant it as the highest compliment he knew how to give - he’d watched these aircraft absorb punishment and keep flying, and he’d seen the sortie numbers come in every evening. He knew exactly what his Hurricanes had done.
