The Navy’s top-scoring ace of the entire war, Commander David McCampbell, flew the Hellcat.
In October 1944, during the fighting around Leyte Gulf off the Philippines, a large Japanese formation approached the American fleet. McCampbell and his wingman, Roy Rushing, climbed above the enemy formation and went to work.
In that single mission, McCampbell shot down nine enemy aircraft - the American single-sortie record, never beaten. Rushing downed six. Between them, two Hellcats destroyed 15 aircraft in one fight.
McCampbell returned to his carrier so low on fuel that his engine quit from starvation as he taxied out of the arresting wire. When crews counted his ammunition, he had only a handful of rounds left across all six guns. The airplane held together through impossible odds and carried him home on fumes.
Was the Corsair a Better Airplane?
In raw performance, the Vought F4U Corsair has an argument: it was faster and soldiered on for years after the war, while the Hellcat was retired quickly.
But early on, the Corsair was a handful off a carrier deck - its long nose and its habit of dropping a wing in the stall meant it took time before the Navy trusted it aboard ship. The Hellcat, by contrast, could be handed to an average pilot who would get aboard the carrier in one piece.
Sometimes the winning airplane isn’t the one with the best numbers - it’s the one that fits the hand of the person flying it. There is real virtue in an honest airplane.
What Happened to the Hellcats After the War
When the war ended, thousands of Hellcats had no further use. Many were scrapped or melted down.
In the years that followed, the Navy converted numbers of them into radio-controlled drones, flying them pilotless as target aircraft - and some even as guided flying bombs in Korea. Aircraft that had survived the worst air fighting in history were flown unmanned into the sea for gunnery practice.
That scarcity is why the survivors matter. Only a handful of airworthy Hellcats fly today. Its engine note is unmistakable - not the scream of a Merlin, but a deep, round rumble like thunder in the distance.
