American forces located the wreck on July 10, 1942. The airframe was bent in places but largely whole. The Nakajima Sakae radial engine was still serviceable. They drained it, hauled it to a Dutch Harbor beach, crated it, and shipped it to Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego. After repairs and a yellow cowl painted on to prevent any friendly-fire confusion, they flew it.

What the Akutan Zero Told American Engineers

The test results in San Diego confirmed what combat pilots had reported - and added precise, measurable detail. The Zero was the product of a specific engineering philosophy: sacrifice protection and structural strength for performance. No armor behind the pilot. No self-sealing fuel tanks. Every possible pound eliminated to maximize agility and range.

That philosophy produced a brilliant aircraft. Until the engagement went fast.

Above approximately 250 mph in a dive, the Zero’s ailerons stiffened dramatically. Fast, kinetic maneuvering negated its greatest strength. The F6F Hellcat was not designed to be elegant or light. It was designed to kill Zeros, and Grumman’s engineers understood the difference.

The Hellcat is larger and heavier than the Zero. Its engine - the Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp - produces 2,000 horsepower in a radial configuration. Its armament is six .50-caliber Browning machine guns in the wings. The pilot sits behind armor plate. The fuel tanks seal when punctured. The landing gear is deliberately overbuilt for carrier operations under combat conditions.

The Grumman Iron Works at Peak Production

The Bethpage factory ran continuously. Workers slept in shifts. More than 12,000 Hellcats were delivered by war’s end - roughly three years of full production. At peak output, a new Hellcat completed the line approximately every 45 minutes, around the clock.

Commander David McCampbell, 34 years old, was serving as Commander, Air Group Fifteen, aboard Essex. Air group commanders manage and coordinate; they don’t typically fly fighter intercepts. But McCampbell was airborne when the radar picture filled with incoming contacts. The seven other fighters assigned to the intercept turned back - mechanical problems, fuel issues. McCampbell and his wingman, Lieutenant Roy Rushing, kept going.

What followed lasted over 90 minutes. McCampbell worked down through the formation from altitude, selecting vulnerable targets, using the Hellcat’s speed to control the geometry of each engagement, never allowing a Zero pilot the slow turning fight he wanted. Running critically low on ammunition, he timed his bursts to make what remained count.
